RPI Hockey 2012-2013 Part IV: Not A Finished Product Yet

Re: RPI Hockey 2012-2013 Part IV: Not A Finished Product Yet

For the PWR fanatics, a win over Brown and non-wins by Union and Merrimack on Friday could easily flip both of those comparisons in our favor. (Actually, the Merrimack comparison will also be affected by their game today against UMass.)

The Wisconsin comparison could also be flipped in our favor with them facing Minnesota on Friday. 13 comparison wins would put us at T-18 with Northern Michigan (winning RPI, but losing the head-to-head) assuming nothing else changed.

The only problem is that there's a bit of a gap in the RPI standings between the 0.51's and the 0.53's. The only teams that currently have 0.52's are Alaska and BU, both of whom are way above their RPI in the PWR standings. So, the standings where the Engineers are sitting right now, in the thick of the 0.51's are really fluid, but there will come a point when they hit the 0.52's where it doesn't seem like they're making much progress.

Thanks B12-I actually understand that. I had playing with different scenarios for a few days. It just seemed to me we had dug enough of a hole that rising much higher would be difficult at best. So i guess the mantra is-Just Win Baby!

Harvard/Dartmouth play to a 1-1 tie. That helps us a bit as DC cannot get 2 points today. DC scored with 3 minutes left but the goal was reviewed and disallowed for a man in the crease.

That is good news as we are now in a 3-way tie for third with DC and PU. Not really sure how they break a 3-way tie, but head to head we split with DC and went 0-1-1 against PU. Princeton beat Dartmouth in their first meeting and the rematch isn't until the final weekend.

Regardless, lets just play our games and not worry about how everyone else does.

That is exactly how the team and the coaches have to approach the next 3 weekends. But as fans-we know that how everone else does affects our positioning and so we discuss it all the time-we have for all 14 years that i have been posting on this board. There are a considerable number of our guys who monitor every game and then figure out how it affects our status.(sometimes hour by hour and even minute by minute) When we got the last slot in the NCAA's a couple years ago-we were doing it that last day constantly.

We would be seeded 4th if the season ended today. Princeton is 2-0-1 (.833), we're 1-2-1 (.375), and Dartmouth is 1-2-0 (.333) in games between the tied teams.

Once a tiebreaker pulls out one team from the pack, they start over for the other two. So the records against the tied teams pulls Princeton into third, and then they restart the tie breakers between Dartmouth and us. Because we split with Dartmouth, it goes to record against the top four. We're fighting for who's in fourth, so I did this with record against the top three, but since we split with Dartmouth, even if we included the teams tied for fourth in the count, it would come out the same. Dartmouth is 1-3-0 (.250) against top three teams, 2-4-0 (.333) if you include us as a fourth. We're 1-2-2 (.400) against top three teams, 2-3-2 (.428) if you include Dartmouth as a fourth. So yes, we're seeded fourth!

EDIT: I misread the tiebreakers, the second tiebreaker is wins. However, Dartmouth and RPI are both 7-6-3 in the ECAC so we go to the third tiebreaker, record against the top 4 anyway.

EDIT 2: lugnut92 pointed out that only the first tiebreaker is needed, you only go to others if after team A pulls away, B and C are still tied. But no matter what, it's 3 Princeton, 4 RPI, 5 Dartmouth, so we're good. :)

So i can begin to think about ordering my home tickets for HFH for the second round of the ECAC playoffs?;)

Hey, we have three weeks left, wait for burgie12's advice on his ECAC Byes and Home Ice thread. :p And knock on wood!

Of course-just jesting;) as usual. I am guessing that 27 points guarantees a bye, 26 most likely does too, and 25 is iffy depending on tie breakers and who else has 25 points. I do not think we have had as many as 27 points since 2003. Still sometimes hard to know who to root for. Tuesday we have Yale at Brown-I would think a Yale loss would help and hopefully they go to overtime in a bruising and tiring game.:)

Yeah, I think the blizzard is actually really helping us out here with that delayed game. Can't hurt to have both Brown and Yale coming to the Capital District all tired out. Our last three weekends certainly look promising. We have Brown/Yale at the HFH when they're tired who we took three points from earlier in the season, then we're at Cornell/Colgate who we swept, then we have Clarkson/SLU who we also just swept. For a team that's fighting to win as many games as possible as the season closes, our schedule couldn't get much better.

Re: RPI Hockey 2012-2013 Part IV: Not A Finished Product Yet

One thing that would probably help us, especially in TUC record comparisons... Union to lose out, or at least come close to it. Those 3 TUC losses are damaging.
I agree that it would be nice if Union could fall out of the TUC list. That could be the most important thing that could happen from our PoV besides for continuing to win ourselves, but I don't expect that to happen. IMHO, they will at least sputter along the rest of the season and finish above .500 in the RatingsPI.

I'll take Things We Should Care Less Than Nothing About for $400, Alex.

Unfortunately, Ralph had the last correct response.

Uh, sure.

Bottom line, obsessing over minutiae in the Pairwise right now is just silly. It's beyond a waste of time when nothing matters but your own team winning. Once they get closer - IF they get closer - it'll matter a lot more what other teams do. 23rd is not close.

Basically I agree with you, that now it is "just win, baby." We are still quite far from winning enough comparisons to worry about secondary factors. On the other hand, removing three TUC losses is probably the largest secondary factor at the moment. Also there are some games that it would be better if Union were to lose than others.

Also, it is nice to root against Union under any circumstances. :D
