Re: RPI Hockey 2012-2013 Part IV: Not A Finished Product Yet

I don't think much gets by him. He is one sharp cookie. Whether he can implement some sort of change in how we approach that 5 on 3 situation-and as importantly, how we approach attacking when we are forced to pull the goaltender (another area where we are just abyssmal) is another thing.
He may indeed be a sharp cookie, but noticing our performance on 5 on 3's doesn't take much.

Re: RPI Hockey 2012-2013 Part IV: Not A Finished Product Yet

And even better if the spurious penalty call was not made in the Union game. I suspect that and the above mentioned QU mistake on our part were reversed-we could be as high as 13. Just thinking out loud....
In reality, this team has left a lot of points on the ice this year. My list is as follows:

Minnesota State tie should have been a win (1 point)
Minnesota State loss should have been a tie (1)
Princeton tie should have been a win (1)
Quinnipiac loss should have been a tie (1)
Brown tie should have been a win (1)
BU loss should have been a tie (1) and as Parker said... RPI deserved to win
Princeton loss should have been a win (2)
Union loss should have been a tie (1)

On the negative side, the only places where we could argue that we were fortunate were games that we deserved to win anyhow (SLU & Minnesota St. tie). I can't think of a game where we were outplayed yet somehow got a point.

Put that all together and we have 4.5 more wins and 4.5 fewer losses. Plug this all into the CHN "What-if" tool and we have a 16-6-7 record and are ranked 4th in the PWR. While that may be eyebrow raising to many, I for one believe that we are playing more like a 4th ranked team than a 19th ranked team. I'll settle for top 10 after we get through ECAC playoffs.

And you're still burning about the QU SHG? Enough already! We still have 5 games left in the regular season plus playoffs. We still have plenty of time to make it into the Top 16 in the pairwise. We keep playing this way and I can't see how they can keep us out.

Thanks JM-i did not carry my point that far but i agree with you totally. We have allowed a lot of possible success to disappear. I'm not saying we deserved every one of those points you listed. I justed pointed out 2 that were so obvious to me that i could not leave them alone. The others, the 2 goal leads in the third period, etc-add up to this being one of those years that just could have been spectacular. I do think the last stretch of 8 games or even a bit more-we are playing like a top 10 national team-and we have a lot of pressure to continue doing that. Had we succeeded in some of those listed games-perhaps we would have less pressure now and could actually afford an off night or two like QU can.

Just making the point of how 1 play or one call can have such a devastating effect. You are totally missing that-of course we have time but now we have to win just about every single game which does not allow for even a single bad night. You keep saying just win every game-well for &%$# sake, that goes for any team. Any team in any league that can win every game they play from here on in becomes national champion. And we can keep playing the way we are and be kept out-very easily-without being ranked high enough in the PWR-one inopportune loss and we do not even get the chance in the NCAA tournament to play. It sure would be a kick in the butt if we win the next 5 league games-win the round in the playoffs-go to AC and lose the first game and miss the Tournament because our PWR rating is just a bubble team. We are not going to move up in PWR by beating the last 4 teams in our regualr season (we do get moved up winning tonight).

How true! And for some reason we get to see Kotyra in some of our most important games. Maybe there is some incentive for him to take early retirement?:)

While we're at it can we throw in if Pirri and JDA were still with us and where we would/would not be then? Or doesn't the system allow for that under the "what if"?

You can add them, but we would not have two others, my guess is Neal and Schroeder, if they were still here. It's the scholarship limit.

Thanks for the calculation. Of course, lots of teams, perhaps everyone except SHU, could make similar statements.

Schroeder hasn't played most of this year so take him out. Btw I think I over heard someone last night say his red shirt was approved.

You could have said the same thing about UNO two years ago. We made it into the tournament over them because of Alabama Huntsville. I didn't read the threads to see if they were whining similar to this, though. In 2010-11, we received just about every break you could get from league-mates to put us into position for a bye, and we forgot something pretty important to get the bye: holding up our end of the bargain. I know that people will chastise me over regurgitating "coachspeak", but Appert has a point. It matters more what our team is doing to get up for these games. How about we look to not put ourselves into a position where we have to argue about all of these alignments not within our control to happen. OK, so there was a penalty in the Union game. Did we have a chance to stop it? Yes. Did we? No. That's not like Hicks Screwjob I or II where the action of the puck completely crossing the line DID happen and a lousy call truly DID take away points. Also, in that game, how many open nets did we miss? At least two? You sure as heck aren't going to win any games doing that. Chance favors the prepared mind.

We didn't know, three months ago, that this juncture would be important. For all we knew, we could have just been willowing in the basement. Perhaps you had forgotten that it took us over month to get a league win? It wouldn't surprise me if the league schedules the officials at about the same time they schedule the games. After all, these referees have day jobs, and travel needs to be arranged.

Re: RPI Hockey 2012-2013 Part IV: Not A Finished Product Yet

Does anyone know if scouts have to make teams aware if they will be in attendance? I believe there may have been 2 sitting near me last night. They were clearly looking at our guys as one had the program and was constantly looking up names. Plus for the 2nd period they sat down toward the west end where we attack. If they were really scouts I wonder who they were looking at.

Re: RPI Hockey 2012-2013 Part IV: Not A Finished Product Yet

You were correct. It was Tapper, not Coles. I missed those two games at the Pepsi Arena because I was in Hawaii at the time (now there's an excuse!).

Anyway, here is the answer to the trivia question: it was taken in the 1978-79 season by (are you ready for this?) Joe Venner. I wish I knew which game it was that season, but I can't find it anywhere. And no, he didn't score.

Great game tonight! Total team effort as all 4 lines played exceptional. For our older posters in here, they had a short ceremony at center ice to honor all the season ticket holders of 50 years or more! There were about a dozen out there on the ice and got a very nice ovation from the fans.

I don't have my scrapbook with me, but I want to say RPI connected on a penalty shot during the 83-84 or 84-85 season at home....Kraig Nienhuis v. Michigan?

Sometimes people will get a glimpse of a circle mark on the program to know who they're looking at. If they were constantly looking up names, though, it would lead me to believe that they weren't looking at someone in particular, or if they were, someone else really caught their eye. I highly doubt they have to make teams aware, unless they'd like to talk with a player after the game, similar to when one of our coaches visits the USHL games. I'm not sure what NCAA rules are associated with that, though.

Scouts may or may not let the player know, depending on the situation. If the player is drafted, chances are they'll know who is in the building. If they want to see how the player does, they'll politely let them know who is in town. Our seats used to be right in front of the "padded seats" in section 9, we used to get a kick out of who would sit there... Dick Scammell when he was w/ Montreal came multiple times, Scotty Bowman came a couple times to watch Daren Puppa, and Al Arbour came to see someone from SLU...

That's where they were sitting. I didn't pay much attention to them in the 1st period. Then I thought they went to their actual seats for the 2nd period but when I saw they were back in the 3rd about half way through it I asked a buddy of mine who was closer to them if he thought they were scouts. He said based on some of what he heard them talking about he thought they were. That's when I paid a little more attention to them. However, I could not see anything on their clothing of a name or logo for a team they may have been associated with.

There's no "they" keeping anyone in or out, fortunately. If the season started today, despite this hot streak, RPI would be out of the tournament. Fortunately, the tournament doesn't start today, but it means there is more work to be done. It won't be easy, and the surest way into the tournament is still that spittoon they give someone in Atlantic City.
