Re: RPI Hockey 2012-2013 Part IV: Not A Finished Product Yet

The last RPI player who scored on a penalty shot in the capital district was Bruce Coles at the Pepsi Arena (now the TU Center) in 1999. Will give the answer tonight when I get home from the RPI game if no one guesses it before then.

Interesting that we're breaking up 12-26-14... I thought that brought a lot of energy. Ah well, we need to fill some gaps somewhere.

Bruce Coles played with Joe Juneau 87-91 unless he scored an alumni goal he was not with RPI in 1999.

I saw Brad Tapper score on a penalty shot in the Pepsi Arena (not at HFH)-now whether that was what you were alluding to or not i do not know. It was aginast BU. It was Oct 15th 1999 I think at about the 2 minute mark. I could never forget it-my all time favorite ref did the game and made the penalty call-Mike Noeth.

While waiting for the game to start, I googled "rpi penalty shot". I haven't found the answer, but one match was this page showing that the club team had one in November which wasn't made. The page also mentions that the club team's playoff game tomorrow will be streamed in case anyone wants to watch Sean Sanford or anyone else. The game is at 3 PM.

Noeth must have gotten confused with all the red on the ice and thought he was giving the penalty shot to BU.:D

perhaps some good news concerning the injury to MT. I won't get into any details here but it's a whole lot better news today than it was yesterday :)

I will repeat what Jenny used to say about the man-Noeth Knoweth Nothing. She despised him-I actually had to haul her off the glass at HFH one night as she tried to go after him. She always had that hot Italian temper and she had lots of reasons to direct it at him. Pierre belanger was her other target. But i do recall that penalty shot as Brad scored to tie the game at 1-1 and then rode the stick which really rubbed it in to the BU bench. The goslie for BU was not Ricky DePetro that night as he sat out-i think it was a kid named Tapp but again that is just from memory. It was the year that tapper scored 31 goals and he was just on fire. I can't recall the last successful penalty shot at HFH. But we had stoped seeing every game in 2001. We saw every home game and 90% of road games from 1975 through 2001. Plus sporadic games before and after. As most know here, i try to go strictly upon memory (and at my age some things are a tad dim) i do not look up the stats of the games. If i make a mistake-it is an honest one simply because the recollection is a bit unclear. I do have the scoresheets for most game from 1963 through 2001 but they are up in BML and not here in NJ.

You were correct. It was Tapper, not Coles. I missed those two games at the Pepsi Arena because I was in Hawaii at the time (now there's an excuse!).

Anyway, here is the answer to the trivia question: it was taken in the 1978-79 season by (are you ready for this?) Joe Venner. I wish I knew which game it was that season, but I can't find it anywhere. And no, he didn't score.

Great game tonight! Total team effort as all 4 lines played exceptional. For our older posters in here, they had a short ceremony at center ice to honor all the season ticket holders of 50 years or more! There were about a dozen out there on the ice and got a very nice ovation from the fans.

Joe Venner, eh?

They gave him Dale Watson's number 16 but, unfortunately, Dale's scoring touch didn't go with it. Venner scored a total of two goals and eight assists during his varsity career at RPI.
