Re: RPI Hockey 2012-2013 Part 1: Pocket Protectors and Hockey Sticks

Prove what? that we are ranked as low as 33rd in Division I or that we ranked as highly as 5th in the ECAC? Playing Ferris State really should not affect the second part.
I would think that splitting or better should improve both positions.

BTW, i have always felt that since the voters pick their top 20, the rankings below the top 20 are quite meaningless, and those in the lower part of the tiop 20 are not too meaningful either. In the extreme case, a team that every voter felt was #21 would get no votes. Then again nothing is very meaningful this time of the year.

My point and expressed well. Polls mean very little to me unless you are in the top 10 or close to it. Most people voting in all of these things have never seen some of the teams at all-and some just vote based on a boxscore they may have looked at quickly. They get to see a few teams in person and a few more on nationally broadcast cable channels but unless they are smart and go online to tune into RPI TV (which so far this year has just been off the scale excellent) they sould have no clue about hockey played in Troy NY. Perhaps that isn't so bad-as we might just sneak up on some people and teams. I recall back in 1985 how even when we had perhaps one of the top 5 teams of all time in college hockey-we were not getting all that much publicity for most of the season. In the very back of Sports Illustrated they would have a little blurb on college hockey and Michigan State got touted every week while we were winning game after game by lopsided scores. I suppose it was because we had 2 early losses that year. Finally after we had run off about 25-30 in a row, we got top billing. Although times are very different now(there was little or no cable coverage then-and even less internet coverage and certainly no USCHO) we just do not get much national attention and to be honest, for the past several years do not really deserve it. But i suspect we could be very good-soon-and still not get the publicity. Until recently in the ECAC you had to be Cornell or Harvard to get any national coverage. Union has changed that a bit in the last couple years (and credit to them for that-they deserve it). Hopefully it will be our turn-we keep recruiting a great bunch of boys and it will start to show. Our every 31 year prediction may come true yet.:D

"We want Nick (Bailen) to be a rover not a defenseman." - Seth Appert. Mirrors what most of us have been saying here for a while now. Not sure why you wouldn't just go ahead and make him a forward, a la Brutlag. Love what Seth had to say about the goaltending...wanting/anticipating one of the three to step up and grab the reigns.

Probably because we need the competition at the D position. Last year, we only had 7. Sure, we have 8 this year, but senior year is a little late to be moving players that aren't already utility players, such as Vassel.

I know some of us would prefer to see Kasdorf back up Diebold this year, or even the other way around, but juggling this is going to be tough. Best of luck to Coach.

I really appreciated SA taking the blame immediately for the slow start last year. Deflecting the blame to himself is something a good coach does. i am very tempted to tell Ken Schoot that we could do one heck of a hair transplant on him-move much of that Caesarian wreath that he has up onto the top. I think I could make him into a pretty decent Chia Pet.

If Bailen is the rover, I believe it would be advantageous to keep him off the PK. Tough to do both and keep him fresh for PP. Also you will need a shut down guy to be paired with him. Ala, Dallas Smith with Bobby Orr during the Bruins glory days. He has in the past played alot w/ Guy, so if it is Guy he will have to stay home more. Very insightful interview and I am rethinking my feud with Schottsie.

If I'm not mistaken, Nick was playing a wing position on the power play in the Acadia game. He may have started a the D position on the faceoff, but was certainly on the right wing as the play was in the offensive zone.

Sometimes that kind of thing can cause quite a disruption for an opponent. I recall Fridge putting D-man Senez up front against SLU at home one game and we were up 3 or 4 goals before Joe marsh could figure out how to deal with everything. If nothing else, it can lead to some surprises.

I believe you are correct. I remembered looking at the PP & thinking we were playing without any D-man when I noticed Nicky down low in the right face-off circle.

I noticed it also, but I wasn't sure if he had just moved up or was there the whole time.

My tickets to this weekend's games which I ordered on 10/1 still haven't showed up. I called the ticket office, and they said "no problem". (From past experience the mailman probably put it in the wrong mailbox, and the person who got them, instead of just sliding them under my door, returned them and they went back to the post office.) I may have to remain at the tailgate until the game is over. :D

I recall speaking to Seth and him stating he was watching some old RPI game tapes this past summer!

Bailen already plays like a forward it comes naturally to him, as it did for Brutlag.....there'd be no adjustment for him. If anything, you'd have a VERY defensively responsible forward. Nothing would preclude him from moving back to the blue line, if the wheels fell off on the back end. I'm not hung up on it, especially given our maturing depth at Forward, but he belongs up front, IMO.

RB - no worries - I have ticket for you for both nights. Granted, it is in the much-maligned "townie" side of the ice... But you're welcome to it...I'll have them with me tomorrow.
