Re: RPI Hockey 2012-2013 Part 1: Pocket Protectors and Hockey Sticks

Using that kind of comparative thinking-years ago I once figured out a similar thing for the football team.We had beaten some higher ranked division III opponent-who had beaten others, etc. And it worked out that we should beat Notre Dame who was playing for the national championship

I recall seeing logic like that either in the Poly or the Record after we beat Middlebury in 1965.

Ralph and Dr. D, I remember the article in question and it did come after RPI beat Middlebury in 1965 - a year later, in fact, after RPI also beat Middlebury in 1966. That was my freshman year on campus.

I'm pretty sure I'm right, because Notre Dame's 1965 team finished 7-2-1, so they were good, but not national championship calibre. It was Notre Dame's 1966 team that clinched the national championship in an epic 10-10 tie against Michigan State.

You know college football has changed when you think that those were the days when (1) college football games could end in a tie and (2) the national championship was decided on the basis of polls conducted before the bowl games were played. ;)

That certainly could have been the case.

Re: RPI Hockey 2012-2013 Part 1: Pocket Protectors and Hockey Sticks

Anyone for some strange reason have a link to the thread with the discussion regarding the game against Acadia last year? I'm curious to see how peoples impressions of that game compare to the ones from this year. My guess is we stack up better against teams that are not deep (like Acadia likely is) due to our relatively even but deep forward lines. I think once we run into teams that can match our depth, the head to head scoring ability will rear its head a bit more, which is likely where we will falter. Hopefully our scorers have developed more than I assume they have, as that is yet to be determined, and I am proven wrong.

The game thread from last season. It looks like I knew what year it was back then. :D

I am not sure how to bring the link from last year's Score Thread over to here but it is there....clik Score Updates, do a forum search... "Acadia @ RPI 10/1/11" and there you be.

wisenheimer.

Actually, I was reading last year's thread when I started this year's and copied the title. I changed the day of the month but not the year. My typical half-assed job. ;)

Edit: Didn't think that I could say that here.

It really is nice to have a couple old timers here-Between You and RB and myself we probably total 140+ years of following RPI hockey:eek: Also nice to know ther are others besides me who remember what it was like to go to HFH back in those days.

We ended up having more than that later in the game - I can't remember exactly, but it was closer to 150.

Overall, how did the stream go? Did anyone have any buffering issues or general playback problems? I am still working on getting the automatic bitrate switching for live streams working, which should improve the experience quite a bit.

I could not get it on my phone. It said it was not setup for mobile.

RPI stays at five points in this week's USCHO poll. (And SCCC starts its descent back to mediocrity. ;) )

Every year it seems we try to read too much into these first few games. Last year, I recall everyone being excited after Acadia, hopeful after Minnesota St. and then pretty down after Ferris State. No one knew that Ferris was any good at the time. This year? Who knows where things will go but there are a couple of things I think we can reasonably expect. First, we are better than last year. I base this on our record in the 2nd 1/2 of last year and limited graduation losses. Second, Ferris State is not as good as they were last year. This is based on the CCHA polls which have them 4th or 5th. Clearly if they were as good as last year, having been in the NC game, they would have polled higher.

Given these two factors, I'll be disappointed if we don't do better than "not getting blown out". I think a split is a reasonable expectation and would be happy with that.

I couldn't make the Acadia game, so I won' t be able to read any tea leaves. :D That said, Ferris was ranked 11th in the USCHO poll. Despite their player losses, its not a stretch to say they'll have plenty of skill on either end of the ice and will pose a stiff challenge.

Here's what USCHO had to say about them: http://www.uscho.com/2012/10/09/even-after-postseason-success-daniels-ferris-state-havent-changed/

Doesn't mean much. We have to prove it this weekend.

Its a long season, lets just hope we get untracked before January this year.
Looking forward to Friday's game and getting a chance to see the team in action.

I agree. Good early test. They did lose their netminder from last year Nelson.

Re: RPI Hockey 2012-2013 Part 1: Pocket Protectors and Hockey Sticks

....are people following the situation at Wisc. involving Fr. Nick Kerdiles regarding his 1 year suspension by the NC$$......be careful guys when sitting down with agents, family advisors & so on..... http://unitedstatesofhockey.com/201...-kerdiles-ineligible-for-season-wisconsin-app

Many people don't take the rules seriously, but the NCAA is very strict. I imagine the suspension stems from the mere appearance at the dinner with the adivsor/agent. The rules state very clearly that a player and his family may not receive ANY gratuities (Not even a t shirt or gum). Had this young squire had a smart advisor, he'd be able to produce the receipt for his portion of the dinner that night and all questions would disappear.

Exactly-and it does not take much to arouse suspicion. I have had contact with several advisor/agents over the years and all the ones i have met know the rules (and how to avoid them). I must say though-the enforcement of these rules had really not been taken all that seriously years ago-but things have certainly changed.

Doesn't mean much. We have to prove it this weekend.

Prove what? that we are ranked as low as 33rd in Division I or that we ranked as highly as 5th in the ECAC? Playing Ferris State really should not affect the second part.

I have a feeling posing for a picture with Yakupov and the BioSteel fiolks didn't help matters. I suspect that if he isnt already, the young lad will soon be on a plane to Kelowna.
