Re: RPI Hockey 2012-2013 Part 1: Pocket Protectors and Hockey Sticks

Zalewski was called Diesel in juniors also. I was also impressed with the improvement of Neal and JL from last year. Neal's injury might have lingered longer than we knew about. The line of Haggerty et al. might have looked even better if Haggerty didn't spend a lot of time in the penalty box.

I doubt that we will see the same goalie in the nets for both games next weekend. Although both Diebold and Kasdorf seemed to play somewhat better than Merriam, I expect Merriam in the net on Friday.

I agree, my guess for goalies next weekend would be Merriam on Friday and Diebold on Saturday.

AspyDad is right, Bubela has a VERY long reach, that's going to serve him well.

Re: RPI Hockey 2012-2013 Part 1: Pocket Protectors and Hockey Sticks

I thought we played decent but think next week will show us what we really are made of at this point in the season. I loved the Haggs, Neal and JL line as well. Actually think we have the potential to have at least 2 powerful lines teams will need to worry about. That is providing SA doesn't juggle them around every week like he seems to do every year. I'm sure Aspydad will have a comment on that to defend our great coach.

Was disappointed to see they did not do anything with our crappy sound system during the off season! Did not hit up the food however I rarely do unless I'm really hungry so cannot comment on it.

Bokenfor did not travel to play golf and said he is done with the clubs for the year with the exception of one week maybe when the tourney is on a Sunday and Monday. O'Grady is hoping to be on the ice before Thanksgiving.

Re: RPI Hockey 2012-2013 Part 1: Pocket Protectors and Hockey Sticks

Yes...we decided it was because he had a goal and didn't hide fast enough when the media came.

Yeah, it was Haggerty, but it was a bad call. It was fun about five minutes into the game to watch Hicks blatantly ignore a hook on McGowan right in front of where I was sitting. If I saw it happen, it should have been a penalty-I'm still not great at picking up on those.

I remember mentioning that with one of the blown off-sides calls, the forward was about as far behind the line as I was away from HFH!

I wonder if this was a complementing factor as to the extracurricular activity during the game.

A similar number RB-I think they had reported about 100 viewers earlier in the day. That is a number that i dont think will change much unless fans of the other teams tune in.
There will probably be a lot of Cornell fans tuning in and some from Clarkson, but besides for that mainly parents from other schools.

Then we'd have a very easy time with Maine. :D
Using that kind of comparative thinking-years ago I once figured out a similar thing for the football team. We had beaten some higher ranked division III opponent-who had beaten others, etc. And it worked out that we should beat Notre Dame who was playing for the national championship. I suppose that kind of reaosning is just fallacious-but it just made for a nice thought. i do think however, that this year, our hockey team has much more potential than most are suspecting. I think it will be a huge mistake for anyone to take us lightly. I am a great believer that hockey is a true game of matchups-we will match up well with some teams and more poorly against others. It remains to be seen if it is the bigger teams, the faster teams, the more defensive teams, the trap playing teams, or whatever that gives us the most trouble. But i think SA has got himself a really nice group with a little bit of everything. Although there is a ton of work to be done-and everything may depend on how the coach can mesh this team together-I was very pleased with what i saw Saturday night. We can roll out several lines that can move the puck and we exhibit a very nive level of toughness. We will learn a lot more next weekend as we face one of the best teams from last year. I have very modest hopes for this weekend-just hoping to see us play well and compete enough to keep both games close enough to show that we are not going to be steam rolled by anyone. Go RED!!!

Re: RPI Hockey 2012-2013 Part 1: Pocket Protectors and Hockey Sticks

A few things I took away from Saturday night's exhibition:

- We've got some talented freshmen if they keep playing like they did. They're not all snipers, but they're all present on the ice.
- Diebold better be starting at least one game against Ferris State, and I want to see more of Kasdorf too.
- The ECAC refs are just as ridiculous as always (apparently getting cross-checked in the middle of your back calls for a diving penalty now?)
- Using that 4-on-3 situation where RPI scored as a good example: where did they finally learn to pass like that?? Keep it up!
- Though it was just an exhibition, I sensed a lot more cohesiveness as a team. Both teams performed better than last year's exhibition.
- Loving the line combinations that we did see, I actually think they should stick with them.

Real test is coming this weekend though, we'll see what they can do. Even if they lose all weekend against Ferris, if they can play well and not get completely blown out on the scoreboard, I'll still call it a success based on who the opposition is.

Writeup on Acadia vs. Quinnipiac

So, okay, Qpac was tired, Acadia was mad, and it sounds like they got lucky on their first goal and their second came during a 5-min powerplay. They did also manage to kill 7 QU powerplays. I agree, this probably isn't the best indicator of how we'll match up with Quinnipiac, and next weekend certainly won't be easy. But I saw a lot of good things during our game, perhaps most importantly they're already playing as a team this year. At times it seemed like we were rolling four lines (plus two forwards), and at others I'd realize someone was on the ice we hadn't seen in a while-it seems like roles are being worked out early. I hope we don't make a habit of it, but we seemed to do really well 4x4. If anything, playing a game gave us concrete things to work on-and a confidence boost never hurt. Ferris will be tough, but they might be in for a few surprises.

I noticed that as well. Obviously 4x4 and 4x3 gives more open ice, and therefore more room to move the puck and a better chance to be effective with passing the puck. Hopefully something the coaching staff has learned is that the umbrella passing on the PP doesn't work in the ECAC because of how effective the defenders are in closing down the lanes.

In regards to open ice: halfway through the game I realized that it was really fun to watch because there was no trap involved, and the game was continually fast-paced and high energy. It will be interesting to see how we fare against that. Hopefully the league can move away from that style of play.

I recall seeing logic like that either in the Poly or the Record after we beat Middlebury in 1965.

And QU couldn't score on the goalie who let in 7 against us last year. :D

Was that the Middlebury game that broke the winless streak? If so, I can recall standing there with my parents watching from up on the hill above the old field. I was beginning to think tht I would leave Troy without evr seeing a victory. When we brought in a patsy Nichols team for homecoming and they had just started to play football and led by 14 points with minutes to play and still did not win-I really thought all was lost.

Walking through a flea market this past weekend Jenny and I ran into an old fellow selling a selection of ancient K&E sliderules. He was surprised thaat we knew what they were. Most people walking by had no clue.
