At least the team is scoring more this year. It took the engineers 14 games to get 16 goals last year. They are at 16 now.

Re: RPI Hockey 2012-2013 Part 1: Pocket Protectors and Hockey Sticks

I remember grabbing my friends arm screaming, "Leblanc's all alone in front.....somebody hit.......NOOOOOOOOOOO.
Yup. I think RPI had even called a timeout to set up the defense and Appert specifically address marking Leblanc....I could be wrong, but I seem to recall post game comment to that effect.

Re: RPI Hockey 2012-2013 Part 1: Pocket Protectors and Hockey Sticks

"Saturday night; Tim Kotyra & Andy O'Brien...." is all I need to know about the Harvard game. I really wish we could develop some sort of vaccine or antibiotic treatment for the Kotyra effect.

3-3 tie. RPI was up 3-0 entering the 3rd. Louis Leblanc tied it with 2.2 secs remaining.... alone in front. Nuff said.

I believe that was 09/10 season when Pirri and JDA were freshman. I was there in 10/11 season when CP was a senior. It was 0-0 and Harvard scored with 8 seconds left in the game.

Have seen at least 24 of our players here tonight in Thompson Arena. 20 dressed and 4 in suits. So are people on here sure there is a 23 man travel rule? I highly doubt 1 of them drove themselves.

Who are the four who are in suits? Conceivably someone came along but isn't eligible to play.

Re: RPI Hockey 2012-2013 Part 1: Pocket Protectors and Hockey Sticks

For those who might like something to think about other than our hockey team's performance against Dartmouth tonight, here's a bit of RPI sports trivia.

What was the first (and to my knowledge, still the only) RPI sports team other than the men's hockey team to play in an NCAA Division I tournament game?

Scroll down for the answer.

The 1969 men's soccer team, which was classified as Division I, qualified for the NCAA tournament.

They played their first round game at Hartwick, a team that had not given up more than one goal in any game all year. RPI stunned the hosts by taking a 3-1 lead into halftime. Unfortunately, Hartwick did not remain stunned, and scored four goals in the second half for a 5-3 final. The Hawks went on to reach the third (quarterfinal) round of the tournament, losing there to Harvard, 1-0.

A few years after that, the NCAA decreed that schools which did not have Division I basketball or football teams could have only one other team play at the Division I level. At RPI, the choice between keeping a Division I soccer team and a Division I hockey team was pretty obvious.

The RPIathletics website, in reporting on this year's soccer team's upcoming NCAA tournament game, mentioned that it is the seventh time RPI soccer has appeared in an NCAA tournament, but didn't mention that not all of those were Division III.

I actually saw a total of 26 players. The 20 dressed plus, LC, ZS, PH, AC, JK, and TF. The only one I did not see was JL. So I have to believe there is not a rule about how many players can travel with the team. I do believe that only 18 skaters can dress and 2 to 3 goalies until someone can show it to me in writing from the ECACHL.

Re: RPI Hockey 2012-2013 Part 1: Pocket Protectors and Hockey Sticks

As for tonight's performance, what a joke. Diebold, the one I and most think should be starting every game couldn't make a save tonight if his life was depending on it. Therefore, I hope we see JK in net tomorrow night. We might as well give him a shot at a full game since, although Merriam played well tonight but only saw 6 shots on goal, we need a goaltender that can make saves and he is the only one of the 3 to NOT give up a goal yet. SA better have a talk with NB, who I think SUCKS, and decide if he wants to play D or move up to forward position. He cannot keep doing what he is since just about every time he is on the ice we give up an odd man rush because he gets caught up in the offensive zone where a D man should not be.

If anyone was thinking of going to tomorrow's Harvard game from the CD area I would say do not waste your gas if we are going to play like have been and did tonight. I might try to sell my tickets and see if I can get tickets to the ND vs BC football game since I am already going to be in the area. At least the Irish are playing well for me this year!!

I feel your pain, and have to wonder what is going on with this team.
As for the goaltender for tonight's game, I still think that Merriam gives us the best chance to win. Kasdorf needs to get some game experience before we throw him in an ECAC game. Let him play both games next week and then decide if we can use him in league games.
Keep the faith and go to tonights game, they just might surprise you.

I usually agree with you on most everything. We are already 0-3 in the ECAC and really did not show we could compete well in all 3 games. Before this season gets too far and we toss it away-why not just get all the freshmen into the game somehow-give Kasdorf time now, play the freshmen D, and of course all the sophs. I just have not seen enough leadership on the ice from the top class and how could playing the younger boys hurt more than we are already feeling? We missed JL and LC last night but I am not sure that alone made the difference. On paper we have the talent to play far better than we have shown. Either that or Union and Dartmouth are super powerhouse teams and just showed that we are not. There is something fundamentally wrong here-we lose games by not holding leads in the third period, we get smeared on the special teams, and we are giving up far too many odd man situations against goaltending that has been uneven at best. After the Ferris State series I honestly thought we would be getting off to a great start-what happened? I haven't a clue.

Doc, just curious. Are the captains appointed or voted on by the team? Also, I could be crazy, but didn't Bailen wear an "A" last season?

I think SA appoints the captains. I do not know if you are crazy but Bailen did not wear the "A" last year. The captains were Bergin and Malchuk and the assistants were Angers-Goulet and Smith.

Doc, I don't have a problem with playing freshmen or anyone else. We do need to shake things up, but both Diebold and Merriam have shown that they can win in this league. It is just one more game, after that, give Kasdorf some experience and if he shows that he is a worthy NHL draftee, let him play.
Leadership is certainly a big problem, from the coaches on down. Someone has to step up and take charge. One captain and no assistants is not working. Give some of these kids leadership roles (and they don't have to be upperclassmen).
This seems to be the most frustrating start of a season since I have been watching RPI hockey.

Thanks for the info.....I don't know why I thought Bailen wore an "A". Sometimes, you never know how a leader will perform their leadership responsibilities until they actually have that letter on their sweater. I wonder how teams respond to Coach appointed leadership as opposed to team appointed leadership?

Just got back from Hanover. I haven't read the record or any account of the game. At the risk of sounding like a non fan, the second period last night was brutal. One of the worst periods of hockey I have seen RPI play in a long time. Midway through the period they gave up the puck at least 3 times in the neutral zone in span of two minutes. It resulted in a 1 on 0 and a couple odd man rushes. Fortunately Dartmouth only finished one play, in that span.
Dartmouth has some really good young players. The sophomores dominated the scoring for them. The first goal, that set the pace, was scored by a freshman. Thank God for the Salt Hill Tavern and my friends from Dartmouth who were gracious in victory.
