Re: RPI Hockey 2012-2013 Part 1: Pocket Protectors and Hockey Sticks

from the Troy Record........Appert explained.

“If I say that our program values certain things,” he said, “and I don’t hold (the players accountable), then we really don’t value those things.”

Those things are “playing with a team-first mentality, passion, energy and competitiveness. We need to be a team that shows in our actions that we value those things.” http://www.troyrecord.com/articles/...509f21056ab59350329958.txt?viewmode=fullstory

Re: RPI Hockey 2012-2013 Part 1: Pocket Protectors and Hockey Sticks

As you all know I was at last nights game if you saw my post. I was also at tonight's game as well as I could not sell my tickets and get tickets to the ND vs ND game. What SA pulled tonight I have to say is one of the ballsiest moves I have ever seen from a coach. In my eyes he though our "B" team out there trying to send a message. At one point, all I could think of was the movie "Rudy" when I read about one of the players who were going to be playing. After meeting this kid I really thought he would be like JC, from last year, and never see ice time. However, I do have to question our great coaches choices for tonight. First of all, how do you sit one of your 4th highest scorer on the team? Granted he may have taken a stupid penalty late in the game the night before. But that penalty in my eyes was BS since there was a big scrum out in front of the net and he was the only one to get called for anything. If SA was trying to send a message then why not sit your Captain last Saturday night after he took a stupid penalty on Friday night! Just because he is your captain he is not above the law. Second, as Dr.D seemed to agree with me, if you were going to balls out like this tonight then why not give Kasdorf the start in goal? He has a much bigger presence, in my eyes, in the net and that is intimidating alone for the opposition. Merriam, and I really like the kid and as a person with me tonight mentioned AGAIN, plays to far back in the net for his talent. He is not Dominic Hasek and is not quick enough to be making saves playing so deep in net. SA being a former goaltender I would think should see this in his style of play. 2 of the 4 goals tonight were scored, in my eyes, because he gave the opposition too much to look at by being deep in net. If people have not noticed I also believe BH is, in SA's eyes, one of the Assistant Captains but just not wearing the "A" on his jersey. Otherwise, I think he would have been sitting out tonight as did some of the other forwards.

One thing I did notice is that NB seemed to stay more at home for his position tonight. Also even though he is a freshman and had to decent games CB is a bit slow. He was out skated twice in two games going for a puck and tonight it hurt him as they scored a goal. Even though it was an empty netter he was still beaten to the puck, by a large margin, and cost us a goal. Not that I expect all of our guys to have the speed MM shows.

All in all, I am very unhappy with what I have seen from this team since the first weekend. I really do not know what happened since that weekend but I really would like to see that team come back out onto the ice. I agree with Dr.D that if we are going to play like this then we might as well let all our younger men getting playing time. At least if none of the upperclassmen want to step up and lead this team perhaps we can find one of them that will and can. It all seems like dejavu from last year before we started to turn things around late in the year. Perhaps we are all the fool to think it is the players themselves and the real problem lies the men we trust to lead these men. At this point I am at a loss. I probably should have taken the one Union fans advise from last week and just stayed at home this past weekend!!

The performance each weekend so far has appeared to me to be worse than the previous one. :(

Re Kasdorf. I am now confused about the ECAC rule about 23 players allowed to go on a road trip. Apparently more can travel, but only 23 can play in the two games. That's how many different players dressed over the weekend and why Kasdorf couldn't play. I thought the reason for the 23-player limit was to reduce travel costs.

Re: RPI Hockey 2012-2013 Part 1: Pocket Protectors and Hockey Sticks

being that I didn't listen to the game could you explain what Mooers' is?

Not being a computer scientist, I have never actually used this rule, but I'm going to guess that he's referring to Mooers' Law, which reads as such:
An information retrieval system will tend not to be used whenever it is more painful and troublesome for a customer to have information than for him not to have it.

Actually, I am not referring to Moores' Law. I am referring to the clothing company that sponsors Coach's Corner. Mooers': Well made, well priced, well dressed.

I am not sure it's as you describe. This is old school and usually doesn't happen this early in the season. I can see it being done to one player to send a message, but it seems there are 5 or 6 players involved here. It does give others who might not usually dress an opportunity to play, but you need your better players in the line up to be successful.

Yeah I have no idea and cannot find anything in writing on it.

Exactly, it is as if he was going into the game saying we might not win this one but I'm going to get my point across to these young men. Don't get me wrong the guys that did play, played their ***es off and had some excellent opportunities to put the puck in the net. It was good for them to get the playing time and experience. Especially when we talk about how deep we are supposed to be. At least on paper from past performances it looks that way. Hopefully there is not more going on inside the locker room we are not privileged to hear about. If there is then it might be another year like last year. Hope that is not the case and that we learn from these past 2 weekends and start playing like the team we all saw play against FS.

Re: RPI Hockey 2012-2013 Part 1: Pocket Protectors and Hockey Sticks

I didn't see the two games this weekend, but this season is looking a lot like most others the past sevearl years. Except for the NCAA team, every season seems to have at least one stretch where the whole team checks out and they throw up a 1-7-3, or a 2-15-1 log. I believe this team has more talent than most of those squads, but you have to wonder why they always turn 2 or 3 off games into a full fledged free fall. Coach Appert knows it is his responsibility to get things on track - "I recruited theses guys and I coach them." I really like him and like the players he brings in, but this program is getting very close to being an embarrassment.

The way I see it, SA sacrificed this game, this early in the season, to light a fire under a disfunctional team.
He started Merriam, because he has the most experience and can take whatever might come from the lineup in front of him. this would have been the worst game to put Kasdorf in. (terrible grammar, I know).
I don't think he wants to wait until January to get the most out of these guys.
I only wish I knew what he was going to do before I started the scores thread. I would have left it for someone else. ;)

Kasdorf both games this weekend I hope

We may not win another game until my tickets for FSU show up. ;)

Re: RPI Hockey 2012-2013 Part 1: Pocket Protectors and Hockey Sticks

Not going to comment on any of the play I saw last night, just a few comments about the whole Harvard experience at Bright Hockey Center. Walked into rink and was told by lady taking tickets, "You guys travel well, lots of you here tonight." Whats up with no music at all other than during warmups? The place was like a church in between plays and periods when our band wasnt playing. BTW, great job to all the band members once again. As I'm leaving last night some old part time ticket taker says to me, "So how did RPI do tonight?" I was taken aback that someone who represents the school and program would make that comment to a visitor. I made some comment like yeah didnt do too well. Class act that old guy was. I highly recommend the Harpoon Brewery Tour next time you go to Boston. 30 min. tour with 30 min. all you can drink samples after.

They were having some sort of difficulty with their PA system that was keeping them from making announcements or playing music through most of the game. It worked out well for us though. We got to play much more than we would have otherwise.

WRPI reported a power problem had all the press booths shut down and off the air except theirs; my guess is that was impacting the PA system as well. A little surprised they didn't get booted in favor of the home team's radio.

But no one probably listens to Harvard's broadcasts. :)

Re: RPI Hockey 2012-2013 Part 1: Pocket Protectors and Hockey Sticks

Another weekend, and another Sunday night where i will limit my comments and hope whatever ails this team is figured out --quickly. Here a few random thoughts in particular order, apologies for the rant.... I am beyond fed up.

1) Whatever the problem with this team is, goaltending is the least of them. If I believe 1/2 of what WRPI announcers said, Merriam stood on his head last night, while the rest of his team was apparently hung over, medicated or both... particularly in the 1st period when the team apparently forgot that the game started at 7PM. Late in the game, he stopped at least two odd man rushes and a break away. The fact that it was only 1-0 after 1 is due directly to his play. Give the kid some effing credit for crissakes.

2) I cannot tolerate hearing Seth say YET AGAIN that "we're not playing Engineer hockey." I'm going to vomit if I hear it again. He recruited these kids, he coaches these guys, I would HOPE by now that it is blatantly clear exactly what he expects of them. The question he needs to answer for himself, his employer and the fans is: WHY are is this team consistently not playing the way we all think they can? Until Seth can answer that, I have no reason to expect change.

3) The D needs to clear the effing puck. Have some pride, have some urgency, communicate and pass the **** puck like you mean it. Not into the guys skates, not behind him, but ON THE FREAKING TAPE. As the DC fan posted on here....Forwards: get the puck to the net low and hard and get your ### to the net.

I am so freakin' tired of going to HFH with ZERO expectations, I can't begin to tell you guy. ARGGGGHHH

Re: RPI Hockey 2012-2013 Part 1: Pocket Protectors and Hockey Sticks

With a 0.404 Win% (0.377 Win% ECAC) over the last 6+ seasons, I'd vote to stop the sacrifices any time now.

With all do respect Red Wrister. The winning percent is .405 (82- 122- 28). Let's not make this worse than it actually is. I did not check the ECAC only number but I am sure you are close enough.
