RPI Hockey 2012-2013 Part 1: Pocket Protectors and Hockey Sticks

Re: RPI Hockey 2012-2013 Part 1: Pocket Protectors and Hockey Sticks

We need to increase the scoring by other lines in addtion to 9-15-39. Although he hasn't scored a goal, Higgs is scoring at a higher P/G level than last season, but we have gotten nothing else offensively from the upper classes. I don't recommend breaking up 9-15-39, but perhaps some other shuffling is in order.

Certainly we seem to be getting about 3 goals per game and that is a distinct move up from early last year. But you have it correct as usual-the scoring is almost all sophomore forwards + Bailen. I would also love to see more from the upper classes but maybe what we are seeing early is what we can expect much of the season. Remeber though that O'Grady coming back could change a lot of things and give SA a chance to move things around a little more.

Re: RPI Hockey 2012-2013 Part 1: Pocket Protectors and Hockey Sticks

It happened to us at least three times in 07-08, two of which were 3-0 leads. It's a recurring theme that has been happening for many years, even if you look at our season records. At some point, we just have a meltdown. We even had that in 10-11. When are we going to see some consistency? ECAC Laws #1 and #2 have been debunked, it's time to debunk #3.

FD: Exactly the point-it seems to happen to us. I hate to go back to the old days, and paybe I am just remembering wrong, but it did not seem to ahppen that often years ago. And that was in the days of higher scoring games where you needed to score 4 or 5 to be sure of at least a tie. Hopefully we find a solution for this and soon.

Lee and Tinordi both contributed significantly to what little scoring we had last season. Could the burden of the lone C be weighing down on the former? It's really too early to be sure, but I wonder.

Re: RPI Hockey 2012-2013 Part 1: Pocket Protectors and Hockey Sticks

My recollection is that RPI dominated the second period on Saturday after MSU did the first period. We came out of the first 40 minutes roughly even in play but ahead 2-0. Nothing against MSU, but I feel we should have been able to win the game at that point.

Fair enough, I guess my point was that RPI gave up 0 goals in the first period in which MSU should have had 3 or 4 if they just put in the rebounds. You're probably right that after being up 2-0 they should have been able to take care of things from there. I know that the shots were very uneven in the second, but I never got the feeling that RPI was dominating the game. They had much, much better chances, but I didn't feel like MSU was getting outworked like Friday night. It felt like it was just a matter of time until MSU put 1 or 2 on the board.

Re: RPI Hockey 2012-2013 Part 1: Pocket Protectors and Hockey Sticks

Forgive me for editing your post Doc, but you are correct. There are strategies that are impemented in all three zones.....defensive, neutral, and offensive zones.

The concept centralizes around puck protection and positioning relative to where the puck is in each zone. The most important thing is selling it to your players without them going into a defensive minded shell, because you still need to continue to do the little things that got you a two goal lead in the first place!!

I think Aspy needs to have a POW WOW with his "great" Coach!;)

I will mention this during my weekly meeting with our great coach and the staff. I agree with Coach that it is going to be a process this year and I like where we’re headed. Our team is being lead by many underclassmen playing quality minutes in big spots and they will learn to close the deal. I don’t think the problem was that we didn’t employ some defensive strategy(see trap). From watching on the feed it looked like we were having trouble getting the puck out of our zone. I’m all for playing the trap when we’re ahead but we need to be better getting the puck out of our end also…and we will.

Possibly a factor-but i don't think it is the major one. There is something fundamental that needs to be looked at. I just am not hockey smart enough to figure out what it is. I do feel, however, that SA is, and will (and perhaps already does) know what needs to be addressed. I just hope whatever we do-we do not make some adjustments that cause that sophomore line to stop scoring. And old medical adage that I ran my practice with-If you are not going to make something better, then for God's sake, do not make it worse.:)

Trap, left wing lock, whatever-Aspy-call it what you like. The name doesn't matter. it is just finding a system to fall back upon and play under the right circumstances. So many teams are adept at it and they often do it in such a subtle fashion that you don't even notice it. But they shut you down and create turnovers and make opportunites for themselves and cose out the game.

I agree. My point is that there has to be execution of whatever startegy and while frustrating we need to realize IMO that we have young guys playing big minutes. Goaltending needs to step it up at the end also. These group of men need to learn to win just like the Polacek, York, Brutlag bunch.

...
To answer WS's question, faceoffs show 36-26 in favour of MSU-M.
Thanks for that. I wonder what the 3rd numbers were...out of curiosity. Overall, I agree with Aspy's take. Lotta young guys playing big minutes -- its gonna pay off. I definitely see a more cohesive team this year, which pleases me. Looking forward to seeing how we match up vs. U.

I'd go a step further-win like Oates, Puppa, Carter, Servinis et al. I don't remember that team giving up too many third period leads:D

Mike A. would have made them walk home from Minnesota.

Mike A. would have made them walk home from Minnesota.

Or, in true Minnesota fashion, Herbies without even going to the locker room. Playing the part of Buzz Schneider would be Guy LeBœuf. Getting thrown out of the game gets you out of that sort of thing.
