I guess that blowing leads is an improvemnet over never being in the lead, but ... :(

Troy Record's take, but from "sports staff" instead of Earl Weaver: http://www.troyrecord.com/articles/...5083827680e7e048443805.txt?viewmode=fullstory

To answer WS's question, faceoffs show 36-26 in favour of MSU-M.

Lally's been fantastic at faceoffs so far; Higgs needs to get better since he takes a lot of them and seems to lose them more often than not.

We weren't completely playing defense-only, but it came close. Hopefully Coach can develop and communicate a strategy for holding a lead that involves sticking with our usual gameplan and continuing to pressure on offense, while putting just a little bit more emphasis on defense.

Re: RPI Hockey 2012-2013 Part 1: Pocket Protectors and Hockey Sticks

Forgive me for editing your post Doc, but you are correct. There are strategies that are impemented in all three zones.....defensive, neutral, and offensive zones.

The concept centralizes around puck protection and positioning relative to where the puck is in each zone. The most important thing is selling it to your players without them going into a defensive minded shell, because you still need to continue to do the little things that got you a two goal lead in the first place!!

I think Aspy needs to have a POW WOW with his "great" Coach!;)

Thanks for the edit-I had gotten a bit wordy. you stated it quite well. It is a system and you have to teach it, turn it on, and have the players absolutely buy into it. But and it is a big but-you first have to have a team that plays well enough to get that couple goal lead. And i think we do.

Re: RPI Hockey 2012-2013 Part 1: Pocket Protectors and Hockey Sticks

Frustrating OT defeat last night. I am encouraged that we battled back to tie it in the 3rd, but cant help but think we left one (or two) W's on the ice. I also wonder what the faceoff stats were -- especially in the 3rd. I've been looking for improvement in this area for longer than Doc has been preaching about coaching adjustments....:p A big part of dictating play is winning draws... you can't protect the puck that you don't have. In any event, I hope the boys can learn from the weekend and take it to Union in two weeks.

Winning draws, especially in the defensive end is a huge part of it. Early in a game you can be lackadaisical especially center ice draws. But defensive draws aand especially late in periods you just have to win. An old pro once told me that he would never use his best faceoff draw moves on anyone early in a game in areas where it meant little. He saved them for when it counted. I never thought much of it until that goal in OT last night.:)

That's all we can ask for. Of course it is nice tobe able to get the lead to protect.:D

Re: RPI Hockey 2012-2013 Part 1: Pocket Protectors and Hockey Sticks

Chiming in late. Seems that we left 3 points in Minnesota this weekend. I wasn't able to listen to the game, but read through the thread later, and was wondering if the loss of Leboeuf was a key ingredient to giving up for goals late in the game. Skating with 5 D-men for 50 minutes isn't in most game plans; and I was wondering if they plain just wore down late in the game. Those of you who were able to watch/listen would have a better idea.

it's probably one of many contributing factors, also the Olympic ice sheet.

That probably contributed quite a bit...I thought they did very well with only 5 d but have been noticing Leboeuf has been playing some major minutes this year-wish college hockey had time on ice reports. I'm sure exhaustion was a factor.

On a positive note, we scored an extra-attacker goal! Last season it took us months to get one, even with all that time we spent with the goalie pulled.

You could always write an app for that. ;)

A very positive note-since we gave up so many empty net goals in the past year. Even though in the scheme of things they did not mean much most times (as were down by 2 or even 3) but it always left a bad taste for me as the box score tot eh casual observer looked like we gave up just so much. We have improved in a lot of ways and we have a lot to look forward to this year.

Trust me the loss and tie sucks. But it could be a silver lining and make us focus on union more. Instead of still being unbeaten.

Re: RPI Hockey 2012-2013 Part 1: Pocket Protectors and Hockey Sticks

I took a day to comment on the weekend, because I was too frustrated to comment after the game.
First, there is no excuse for what happened this weekend. There was no problem with the size of the ice or the personnel on the ice for the first two periods of each game.
I can see losing a two goal lead in the third period once during the season, but back to back should never happen.
It seems to me that we haven't played a decent third period yet this year.
We do not have a second gear. We don't seem to be able to raise our game.
We have a very talented team, and the sophomore scorers have come in and done the job. The goalies for the most part have played very well, but when the opposition lifts their game in the third period, we have no answer.
I am not going to place any blame, it is a team thing and everyone needs to look in the mirror.
I hope with a week off, it will give us time to address the problem. I will be at the next home game and expect a full sixty minutes of intensity and energy. If we lose with that kind of effort fine, but if we blow another two goal lead in the third period, we are going to have a very long season.

Re: RPI Hockey 2012-2013 Part 1: Pocket Protectors and Hockey Sticks

As an MSU fan, I wouldn't be so pessimistic about this RPI team. Yes, there were lost leads, but, frankly, on Saturday night it was a matter of time. for about 45 of the 60 minutes I thought MSU was peppering the goalie with good shots. Unfortunately, they weren't able to bury the ones that they should have. MSU does have some pretty good scorers and a hard working team. There are going to be those times when you see that. Talking to a few other people, the prevailing theme was that we were lucky to get out of Friday night with a tie but Cook kept us in it just long enough to get back in the game. Everyone thought RPI looked dang good and most of us thought they looked like a major player was the year goes on.

My recollection is that RPI dominated the second period on Saturday after MSU did the first period. We came out of the first 40 minutes roughly even in play but ahead 2-0. Nothing against MSU, but I feel we should have been able to win the game at that point.

You know i will agree fully with that. i have no clue what the statistic is-but I am sure that anytime you have a 2 goal lead (especially in a low scoreing game such as 2-0 or 3-1) at any time in the third period-you should and you just have to win. Sure it happens-once in a blue moon. It just cannot happen twice in a row to good teams. And I do think this is a good team and will get even better. We play Union next and I would love to see us have a 2 goal lead over them in third and then see what happens:) But I would be happy just to see us play well for the entire time it takes for the next two games.

Re: RPI Hockey 2012-2013 Part 1: Pocket Protectors and Hockey Sticks

It happened to us at least three times in 07-08, two of which were 3-0 leads. It's a recurring theme that has been happening for many years, even if you look at our season records. At some point, we just have a meltdown. We even had that in 10-11. When are we going to see some consistency? ECAC Laws #1 and #2 have been debunked, it's time to debunk #3.

Re: RPI Hockey 2012-2013 Part 1: Pocket Protectors and Hockey Sticks

We need to increase the scoring by other lines in addtion to 9-15-39. Although he hasn't scored a goal, Higgs is scoring at a higher P/G level than last season, but we have gotten nothing else offensively from the upper classes. I don't recommend breaking up 9-15-39, but perhaps some other shuffling is in order.
