I am very concerned about that last ten minutes. It is early in the season, and they have not yet been able to respond when the opponent turns it on. I hope it is inexperience, but you have to wonder about conditioning.
These guys need to keep playing their game and not get run over in the third period.
They get another chance tonight.

All very valid. i would expect the coach to be able to have a team prepared to play the last 10 minutes with a lead. Line changes, pairings, all have to be done seemlessly and when leading-the best defensive combinations out there when possible. yes, it is the responsibility of the players to play the game and defend. But it is the coach who has to sometimes change what is being done on the ice when the situation demands it. Just sayin......

For the football fans-a rough day-Yes, Hobart is that good. In the third period they lead us 28-0 and have over 400 yards total offense already. Majority of their offense has been running over us on the ground and we have had virtually zero success running the ball. They are a big team on the line both offense and defense and it shows. They have a real chance of putting the Liberty league on the map in the NCAA tournament.

I believe it ended a 35-7. Hobart is indeed very good. We are now 5-2 overall with a couple of tough games remaining. Springfield and Union coming up. At least we will be guaranteed a winning season.

I agree. When you are behind in the third it is obvious that you pull out all stops and get as much offense going as you can. Perhaps almost the same when tied-albeit a little more cautiously. So far this season it appears the problem is playing with a lead. For some reason we cannot do what is necessary to clamp down and close the door. Almost like we can't stand prosperity. Comment as you wish but I just do not think it is all the boys' fault. This kind of thing may take a change in approach under that circumstance and that has to be decisons both on the ice and by the coaches. Successful teams do not lose third period leads often. Check the statistics in the NHL or even closer to home-look at Union the past 2 years or Cornell going back almost forever. There are things they all do once they have a lead and get to the latter stages of a game. Although not 100% successful-it sure beats what we have been doing. And no-IT IS NOT A TOTAL PREVENT DEFENSE. That is the surest way to allow a team back in the game (in hockey or football). It is just doing whatever is necessary to switch from a game plan in which you are constantly trying to score the next goal(to win or get back into a game you are losing)-into a game plan where you are just doing the extra things to try not to allow the next goal. And this is done rather seemlessly and often not noticed. I an not a hockey maven, I love to watch the game but i do not analyze it nor understand all the things that coaches do to make these changes. But they do them-when they are up 2 goals late in a game, perhaps playing their better defensive defensemen and making sure they are out their in pairs against the opponent's most potent lines. Perhaps playing your best defensive forward extra shifts. Holding the blue line with a different formation or positioning. Perhaps changing and actually sending in a more aggressive forecheck or holding a forward back to backcheck. I have no clue what the things are they do. And of course taking advantage of any neutral zone or other turnovers this strategy brings to pad the lead.

This team has already shown a number of improvements from the recent seasons. We have a power play that is working. Shorthanded we seem to be very effective. We even showed we can score with an extra attacker. It appears that we have worked on all of these things and we are a better team for it (or else we would never have been a position to have two 2 goal leads late in games). Now we have a new task-work on a system to protect those leads. I am sure as the season goes on we will find new areas that need tweaking. This is part of what the coaches are there for. Is it depressing to come home with a tie and a loss when we had 2 wins at our fingertips? Sure-but this team showed me so much more this weekend than last year. We will be fine once we figure out a few things. Go Red!! Just my 2¢

Sometimes you find yourself needing to play heavy D because your opponent is trying to get the GT. That's going to happen. Look at the talent Colgate had last year in Austin Smith and we had to play tough D in the last 10 minutes of that game. That doesn't mean we should stop our aggressive game and practically give them offensive opportunities. One thing I've noticed in the last few games where we've won and had to protect a lead, it wasn't because we were able to hold them off, but rather because we continued to play our game and brought offensive aggression at a moment they "let up".

Forgive me for editing your post Doc, but you are correct. There are strategies that are impemented in all three zones.....defensive, neutral, and offensive zones.

The concept centralizes around puck protection and positioning relative to where the puck is in each zone. The most important thing is selling it to your players without them going into a defensive minded shell, because you still need to continue to do the little things that got you a two goal lead in the first place!!

I think Aspy needs to have a POW WOW with his "great" Coach!;)

Frustrating OT defeat last night. I am encouraged that we battled back to tie it in the 3rd, but cant help but think we left one (or two) W's on the ice. I also wonder what the faceoff stats were -- especially in the 3rd. I've been looking for improvement in this area for longer than Doc has been preaching about coaching adjustments....:p A big part of dictating play is winning draws... you can't protect the puck that you don't have. In any event, I hope the boys can learn from the weekend and take it to Union in two weeks.
