RPI Engineers '15-'16

Re: RPI Engineers '15-'16

For just the second time this season the Engineers score more than 3 goals, beating Brown 6-2 (the other occasion was a 6-2 win over RIT). The top two lines were flying! Hat trick for Rooney, but really all 6 of those players moved the puck really well all game. Kimmerle also very strong on defence. I should know better than to start naming players because I could go on and name several others that really came to play today. Sometimes, when you play a lower level team like Brown you can play down to their level but that wasn't the case today. Unfortunately, we are now the only ECAC team with no games left against Union and Brown, so RPI will need to win several big games down the stretch...tomorrow against Yale would be an important start.

So, no four-point weekend, but we went 1.000. I guess we have to take that. We did what we had to do against Brown and now wait to play a Yale team that <s>could only tie</s> also beat Union. Tuesday remains a must-win if we want to make the playoffs.

Actually, Yale beat Union 2-1 and outshot them by 41-18...they will be very tough. It is a very important game but I have to quibble with the overused "must-win" phrase. The 5 teams fighting for the final three playoff spots have a whole month of very important games ahead of them.

As I've shown multiple times, I can't read.

As for the "must-win," I only say that because Cornell and SLU seem mostly out of reach (if the projections are accurate). Yale is the team we are most directly fighting for the spot, so the four-point swing is huge.

On second thought, Lugnut, the Yale game is looking close to being a "must win". I just did my own (simplistic) simulation of the rest of the season and it results in Yale and RPI being tied for the final playoff spot, half a point behind Cornell and half a point ahead of Dartmouth. Of the 4 teams battling for the final 2 spots, RPI has by far the toughest remaining schedule, with zero games against Union and Brown and 6 games against the top 6 games. So all three of the games against Yale, Cornell and Dartmouth are huge, and we probably need to pick up a few points against the top 6 as well.

I did a little quick simulation to figure out the effect of this game on our playoff chances. As I said above, right now we stand at 47.9% to make the dance. Here's what we're looking at after the Yale game:

Win - 75.4% (+27.5%)
Tie - 47.0% (-0.9%)
Loss - 23.8% (-24.1%)

So it's a 51.6% swing between winning and losing. We're obviously not out of it if we don't come away with two points, but it would be a huge blow. RPI has one game left against a lower-rated team (by KRACH), so making up the lost points would be very difficult.

Re: RPI Engineers '15-'16

That might have gone better had we played the first period. New projection coming later.

Re: RPI Engineers '15-'16

No bueno. We pushed hard for the tying goal in the third, but getting outshot 13-2 in the first can't happen (that said, I'd be curious to see blocked shot counts). Selander is the only reason we even had a chance tonight. At this point, every game has to be considered must-win. To make the playoffs, we're going to have to start stealing points. At the very least, we need to sew up the tiebreaker with Cornell this weekend. Meanwhile, Yale has their home-and-home with Brown, so cheer for the Bears to at least earn the split.

RPI KRACH (RRWP): 49.40 (.3758)

MCTs (Mean/Median/Mode/Range):
Points - 17.98 / 18 / 18 / 14 - 29
Rank - 9.06 / 9 / 10 / 2 - 11
Playoffs - 24.0%

  9. RPI
  10. Dartmouth
  11. Brown

EDIT: Just looked at the play-by-play, RPI had 17 attempts blocked, Yale had 10.

This team will not make the playoffs. This team would be right at the bottom with Union if they didn't have Selander. The coach needs to go and the program needs a fresh start with someone who knows the game. The PP is horrendous and was just as bad last year. Operating at 9.38% will not win you many hockey games.
