RPI 2024 Off-Season: Was 2023 – 2024 Just a Bad Dream?

"Hockey Hype" gathering tonight at 6PM at HFH (formerly known as season ticket pickup party). Anyone planning to attend? I am interested to hear whether there is any news on the HFH study and recommendations..... time will tell.

Hopefully Dr bowers is in attendance and lets the 14 people know this will be the last year you have to watch this horse shit on ice and we will be hiring a coach that has a winning background that comes from a winning program that knows how to recruit both players and assistant coaches. Oh and we’re getting a new rink.

Quick update from the rather subdued hype fest....:p

-It was a rather disjointed and too lengthy event with no one really acting as the MC
-Smith was not present.(Really). Official word was he was "up north" recruiting
-All three teams were present - Women, Men and Club
-Vines spoke briefly for the women's team and Lange spoke for the Men

-I stayed until 7:30 and there was no official mention of the HFH building study while I was there.

We did however ask AD Bowers what the update was on the study and planning. She eagerly shared the following. (Insert your own personal grains of salt as liberally as you feel the need to !) LOL

-$100 million project, fundraising campaign to follow. No details on timing that she could share.
-Project would be spread out over " 4 or 5 phases" so that the teams won't need to play elsewhere

Project Highlights as noted by Bowers, as I can recall (she was speaking pretty fast):

-North end (home bench side) gets a new 2 story building addition to house all new locker rooms, training and treatment rooms etc. for M's and W's teams on first floor and offices and meeting rooms, lounges on 2nd floor
-New building addition on SW corner of HFH to house new ticket office area, including reworked entrances and lobby
-Shirley's end zone mausoleum and offices get reworked into new two-story seating and specialty areas
-Ice surface gets replaced and sunken, to include seating up to the glass
- Upper tier of HFH gets reworked with an upper ring walkway, stanig areas, etc.
-East end gets reworked and expanded to accommodate seating and facility ops, Zamboinis etc.

Those are the high points of the things she rattled off. Anyone's guess when they might think about going public with the effort.
Talk amongst yourselves !! Ha ha

For the football fans - RPI is current a 6.5 point favorite ovr Wilkes in their next game on Friday evening. After their first game, very difficult to know how they will perform. Personally I think they did as well as expected, showed a few good aspects (especially passing offense) but some glaring weaknesses (kicking, rushing offense, passing defense). Should give us a much better idea of what they bring to the table this week.

Our girls have an exhibition hockey game scheduled in about 10 days. Anyone know if there will be any sort of broadcast (video or audio stream) for this?

Wilkes won their opening game over King's College, 43-28. They can score - but they can also be scored upon.

Wilkes' teams are known as the Colonels. I tried to figure out why that name was chosen.

Wilkes University is located in Wilkes-Barre, which is named for two Englishmen, John Wilkes and Isaac Barre. I guess the college decided it didn't want a hyphenated name, so they just called themselves Wilkes. John Wilkes was a member of Parliament, but as far as I can find, he never held a colonel's commission. Perhaps the college adopted the nickname in honor of the Gone With the Wind character, Ashley Wilkes, to whom Margaret Mitchell assigned the rank of colonel in the Confederate Army.

I can't leave John Wilkes without mentioning one of the snappy comebacks for which he was well known.

To another MP, the fourth Earl of Sandwich, who said to Wilkes, "Sir, I do not know whether you will die on the gallows or of the pox," Wilkes replied, "That depends, my lord, on whether I embrace your lordship's principles or your mistress."

As the old saying goes, those who ignore history are doomed to repeat it (especially when it comes to this place). The only problem is that there are not very many people left attending ANY RPI sports that have been around long enough to see it all or know what to ignore or not ignore.

Phases has been heard plenty before and it don't seem to matter who was running the place or athletics.

1) Early mid 1980's Fieldhouse renovations had multiple long forgotten phases that were never carried out. The only "phase" that ever got done after that era was not even on the original list of "phases". That is the one about ripping out several hundred seats to built a president's box and a hospitality suite on the lower level. Until a couple of years ago the president's box was regularly dark and unoccupied and the membership only hospitality suite is very often lightley utilized, probably because of the $300 per person (not couple) membership fee to enter. Make that $300 but you are not allowed entrance on Freakout night!!! Did anybody ask what the deal is with that???

2) Mid 2000's construction of the ECAV facility also had phases that have never happened. The to be built north end that would eventually enclosed the stadium never happened nor did whatever was supposed to be built outside the north end of the stadium (forgot that too).

3) 2010's renovation of the baseball facility had phases that were to eventually include decent suitable seating, an acceptable enclosure for off field officials, RPI TV and WRPI as well as an adjacent modern softball facility. Yes, the baseball field is top notch but none of the others ever happened. The girls still play at a defunct little league field. While there has been money spent on more than one renovation of the softball field, all that resulted from them is terrible up to bad and finally the current OK.

I have been to these events in the past. I have heard the speeches and seen all the models and drawings over the course of decades. In fact, such a drawing still hangs at the baseball field to this very day. I don't go to them anymore even if I know about them (I didn't in this case) because just I don't trust them or believe a single word they say. I know this one will, at best, only be partially carried out just like all the others that came before.

In honor of Dovar Tinling, today is 11 September 2024. There are 25 days until RPI's next game.

This is based upon 6 October 2024 for the start of next season.

I received a message from Dave Aiello on LinkedIn that Terry Butryn (RPI '87) passed away over the weekend from pancreatic cancer. :(

Just saw that they posted the pictures of the girls on the team on the website. I do not know how well they will compete on the ice this coming year, but as has been the case for some time, we will have one of the most attractive teams ;) And once they add a picture of Ms. Helgeson, this will even enhance this further. When she showed interest in RPI several years ago, saw her picture with sister Kate. Simply - WOW! Now having added this new assistant coach, this will extend to the bench. Makes me wish I was back at RPI - but about 55 years younger!!

Trying to think of a good excuse why the Head Coach didn't attend...Any help out there. Btw I don't think COVID as an excuse.

The Covid excuse is about at the same level as Up North recruiting. I judge if an excuse is a good one by whether Jenny would accept it if I wandered in late one evening perhaps with the scent of some women's perfume on my clothing. Neither of these would hold up well before she reached for some sort of weapon.

They may have borrowed from old plans. I was told at the time that the original plans for the 1982 renovation included reworking the building so fans would enter and then ascend to an upper walkway before going down to their seats. That renovation already lowered the rink level a few feet. How low do they want to go? Some steps would lower seating capacity and some would increase it. What is the final target?

The best Penalty Killer that I ever seen play @ RPI the Kid had a big motor. RIP Engineer.

Terry Butryn and his twin from another mother, Neil Hernberg, were two of the most fun players to watch in all my years following the Engineers.

All true. And don't forget that when Smitty was hired, at the presser, SAJ and MacElroy mumbled platitudes about a $20mil HFH renovation which, as far as I can tell 'Ole Doc Lee dreamt up while on the porcelain throne.

It's particularly telling that there was no formal talk about it from Bowers at the event....had we not asked about in conversation, it never would have come up as far as I can tell.

Just something I find of some interest. A few years ago under the previous administration RPI had the dubious distinction of being one of the lowest rated schools for free speech by FIRE. Just saw the newest release for this year and we improved only slight to the 15th worst (#223 out of #248) with Harvard holding down the lowest spot again. For those interested here is the link https://www.thefire.org/research-learn/2024-college-free-speech-rankings lots of information on how this group arrives at their rankings but the full ranking list is way down at the bottom for you to scroll through.

A little Viagra mixed in with the gimlets this year, Doc?

A press box that can actually fit a 6’4” 225 pound part time play by play broadcaster would be nice

J-I might be getting older but I am not dead. Just a good think Jenny has not seen that post. Remember when i was attending RPI we had only a few young ladies there and most certainly needed a chromosome test to prove they were indeed XX. If this team can play as good as they photograph, we will really have something!
