RPI 2024 Off-Season: Was 2023 – 2024 Just a Bad Dream?

In honor of Sutter Muzzatti and Calla Woodcroft, today is 17 September 2024. There are 19 days until RPI's next game.

This is based upon 6 October 2024 for the start of next season.

I'm not really of strong opinion either way....as long as the do SOMETHING.... AD Bowers mentioned the desire to NOT have to find another place to play for the teams as a strong factor. If you built in the lot above HFH, then you'd have essentially ZERO Staging area for materials and equipment during construction, not to mention event parking while games were still played at HFH. Again, seeing the consultant's study would be valuable in our discussions.

Your points are good ones. The physical and logistical problems for a new building are significant. Even a smaller building on the back lot by ECAV Arena would be a tight fit and most if not all of the existing space in the BARH lot would undoubtedly be needed for staging. To top it off, that location wouldn't have what I've always felt was the impressive visual impact you get when driving up People's toward a fully lit HFH at the top.

As I mentioned, Sacred Heart and UConn opened new buildings during the 22-23 season. UConn's is 2,600 seats plus SRO. SHU's is about 3K plus SRO. To get an idea of how costs spiraled, UConn was originally talking about a $50M building. During design it was raised to $60M and by the time they broke ground during the pandemic it was up to the announced $70M. SHU originally targeted $60M but raised the number to $70M after the bids came back. They still call it a $70M building, but the link below from the architects says construction costs were $84M. Construction costs have stabilized and Upstate NY is cheaper than CT, but those numbers do make me wonder if the $50M they are talking about in Schenectady is realistic even for a smaller rink.

I am going to start the 24-25 thread soon. Last call for a thread title.

The existing one I have kept. (preference?)

The RPI women now have a second AC listed, Jennifer Wilson, former HC at Lake Forest. Their goalie coach for both hockey teams is former Engineer Tony Martino.

From her coaching history seems to have had considerable success and stresses defense which I think may well be our strong point this year.

Football fans - Friday night game for us this week against WPI. We are listed as a rather large favorite (over 26 points) but from what I have seen so far this may be a bit of over optimism. Defense has simply given up too much in both scoring and yardage and as mentioned previously, kicking game is just inconsistent. We may be OK in games against un-ranked teams but with Ithaca, Union and Hobart on the schedule, we have a lot of work to do.

They found a Canadian team willing to go to Troy which the men apparently could not.

RB: Do you know of any rule or limitations on who can be invited to play an exhibition game? I know we have usually played Canadian teams in the past and a few DI teams, but what about a team that plays at the DIII level? it would seem to me that any competitive ice time against some competition would be beneficial before starting the regular season games.

Actually there is only ONE day until RPI’s next game. The women have an exhibition game tomorrow… !

Tickets for all home games, men and women, are now on sale via the website. We picked up our Freakout tickets today. I'll probably catch the men's games down here versus Yale and Q as well as the women's game at SHU. I'm getting lazy in my old age and I've got to get my money's worth on that ESPN+ subscription, but hopefully we'll make the 150 mile drive to HFH for at least one other game.

In women's hockey, exhibition games between D3 and D1 teams used to be commonplace but I haven't seen them for years, so I assume that there is some regulation against them now? The D3/D1 match-ups used to provide an interesting yardstick. The top D3 teams were very competitive with the bottom D1 teams. I'm sure the D3 teams looked forward to those games and equally sure that the D1 teams dreaded them .

Football update - at the half RPI 41 and WPI 0. The score not really representative as the game actually looks even worse if possible. Total domination and I suspect the odds makers had this one correct with RPI as a 26.5 point favorite. This might be the first time I close this down at the half and watch a movie. In all the years of following RPI football I do not recall a game in which we scored a TD on each of our first 6 possessions while shutting out the opponent on 6 possessions.
