RPI 2024 Off-Season: Was 2023 – 2024 Just a Bad Dream?

It's pretty crazy to me to see this kind of negativity before any of us have even seen this team on the ice. I don't really understand the point of it. Some of you are more interested in arguing that the number of people who attended a fricking golf outing is too small a number than talking about potentially adding a dman who had 19 points in 31 games and +8 rating last season. Just absolutely insane to me.
I mentioned what an hockey alum told me then of course your partner attacked me. Par for the course for both of you ( no pun intended) the attacks come now from both of you. Again, Without A Peer was much more objective than the steno taking you guys are doing. Step up the game gentlemen because this thing needs to get fixed. Support of this program has never been lower and cheerleading is not needed. Send Dave my love.

I know you won't read all this or selectively cherry pick statements to respond to, but I'll engage anyways.

He was actually at the event so of course he called you out for spreading a lie. I don't care how many people were there; I just find your doubling down on the number to be dumb, even moreso with actual hockey things to talk about.

As for WaP, they were my inspiration and I loved going back and reading their old work. We are not WaP, but to claim we're "steno taking" and a shill for Dave is pretty absurd. I don't care if the coach is Dave Smith, Ben Barr, Kirk MacDonald, Seth Appert or fckin Santa Claus. We're going to treat them the same and try to set up interviews for our readers. Questions about the horrendous PK, defense, puck possession, faceoffs, etc were asked about at the most recent Q&A. It's pretty amusing calling us cheerleaders because you pretty clearly don't read our stuff or listen to the interviews if you think that. We have numerous pieces that are critical of the team's play last season. I'll link them here for you since I know you won't actually go to find them yourself!

Sorry that we're not negative enough for you; we're not just going to constantly criticize a team of college players. This isn't pro sports with athletes who do this to make a career; we won't give them the same scrutiny that I'd give to my Boston sports teams like the Bruins. We're fans watching a college team, so we're going to try to keep things positive and optimistic as best we can. That's not a lack of objectivity (again if you actually read our stuff, you'd see plenty of times we're critical); it's just our outlook, and that won't change under any circumstances or coach.

You're right that support for the program has never been lower. It's a small fanbase that is depleted and dejected from 20+ years of not winning. Those of us that are still here need to pull people back in. Negativity isn't going to convince anyone to come back or join anew, especially not your toxicity of accusing anyone who chooses to be positive before the puck has even dropped on the season of being biased and just working for Dave.

But honestly, my biggest problem with you is that you're not a real fan. I've been here since 2019, and I have not once see you say a single positive thing about the team, program, staff, players, or anything about RPI hockey in that time, even when they're playing well and winning like the great 19-20 streak where they were on the way to Lake Placid, the good 21-22 playoff run where they almost knocked out the future league champs and were a game away from LP, or any other time. The ONLY time you show up here is to blast the team and program.

You'd rather be right about the team and Dave than actually root for them. You claim to be a diehard, longtime fan who supported the program many ways. But that support stopped in 2017. Supporting the program under Seth and then immediately stopping when he was fired since he's your friend means you aren't a diehard fan; it means you were a fan of that coach.

Like I said, I don't care who the coach is. I want success and I don't care who it comes under. I said before that I think Dave should have another year, and he got it. If it's another failed season and he's gone, I'll move on and support whoever the replacement is. Until then, I'm riding with this team and program because I want them to win and succeed.

Football fans - the score does not represent the entire picture but we are down 35-0 at this point. The game was 14-0 into the third period and we had a couple chances to get closer with a score but just could not convert. Wisconsin is one of the best teams I have seen in years and we certainly were a huge underdog. But we made enough poor plays to cause this to be a much wider point spread than it could have been. We will just have to see how we rebound for the next couple games (both Friday night contests).
BTW if you think that a Thursday evening game for us is rare, the last time we played one was back in 1903! Against some boating club!!

This is pretty long, apparently struck a nerve. You've got ba&$s for questioning my loyalty to the Cherry and White. I've raised $$$ , done a specialty game with the program, heck I've set up seats and tables for the Senior Night dinner that is not done anymore, dug the team bus out of a snowstorm after a game, drove band members to away games, etc. I've got skin in the game son, way more than writing a blog, I've got 50 years of fandom. Maybe I point out deficiencies because I'm tired of the defeatest and pollyannaish attitude you exhibit. Don't try to cancel me by thinking you're a bigger fan and don't think for one second I'm going stop expressing my thoughts. I'll give you the last word but try not to question my sexuality and hit the gutter like you did a few years ago. Stay well.

If we thought Wisconsin - La Crosse showed a dominating defense, how about that Laureate Boating Club?

RPI played the Laureate Boating Club 20 times between 1892 and 1903, losing 18 games and tying the other two. RPI was shut out 17 times in those 20 games.

Today is 6 September 2024. There are 30 days (1 month) until RPI's next game.

This is based upon 6 October 2024 for the start of next season.

Sounds like we played the boating group Jason and the Argonauts!
Yesterday showed just how dominant La Crosse is as a DIII powerhouse deserving of a top rating. We had a few chances but never were able to make that one big play offensively when we needed it. I think it really shows that we need to be able to develop a running game to succeed. Our passing game would be fine if we can give our quarterback enough time. He was able to buy more time as the game went on by rolling out of the pocket but by then the game was determined. Other than the obvious lack of running offense, we better be able to find a better kicking game as the punting was just not enough to put the opponent in poor field position at all. We seemed to start every drive inside our own 10 while they started at mid field. And of course it did not help when on the kick off to open the second half, while we were only down 14-0, we had a fabulous run back deep into their territory nullified by a holding penalty that put us again back behind our own 10 yard line.
Not saying in any way that we could have kept this game close for the final score but just might have made the final look a little less than 35-0.

1892...... Ralph's freshman year ! :) (Just kidding RB ...LOL )

To bring the convo back to hockey, Bergmanis would be a huge addition if GPL is to be believed. 19 points in 31 games and a +8 is better numbers than any dman on the team last season had. Even beyond that, he has 38 points and a +28 rating across 3 seasons of college hockey. No doubt that he'd be one of our best dmen this season. That would give us a pretty deep blue line for this season with all the portal additions, without a doubt a better blue line than we've had the past 2 seasons when the defense and goaltending struggled more. Really hope this rumor is true because it would be a great add

Agree, on paper he looks like a good addition. Does anyone know if he has one or two years (Covid) of eligibility left ?

One. The Covid exemption has expired except for a small number of players that entered in 2020 and red-shirted one of the last three years (or, in the case of Dover Tinling, went back to junior for an entire season).

I had the game on while finishing up some work so I didn’t focus on it. Take my comments with a grain of salt.

It seemed RPI actually played pretty well (better than the score might indicate) against a team that seemed superior in virtually every way. I thought the line held up better than expected in pass blocking, but just couldn’t open enough holes for the running game. The QB had a few nice throws and there were a few drops, mostly when throwing into tighter coverage - seemingly because the receivers had less separation than they might have gotten against lesser competition.

The defense did fairly well with a bend but don’t break philosophy until they seemingly wore down in the second half. UW-L just seemed to have a few “better than D3”” athletes at skill positions. I thought the defensive front held up fairly well but speed and athleticism permitted the Eagles to take much greater advantage of their opportunities.

You must be a fan to keep following a team that makes you so miserable….and that’s the problem. Yes, things have not gone particularly well since, arguably, 1995, with just a few isolated bright points along the way. However, this is our school and we will support it each and every season. We aren’t getting a new coach or line-up in September (although I hope we are getting that new d-man). We can sit here and mope about that or look forward to the coming campaign and cheer them on as best we can. If they have another bad year the “change season” is March to May. The rest of the year a never-ending stream of “we suck” or worse, “I told you idiots we were going to suck” type comments that tear down those who hold out hope as fans just becomes monotonous. It adds no real value and doesn’t reflect well on anyone.

Share some joy once in a while.

Got it. Thanks

A bit more about Bergmanis' at UAF:

2023-24 | Junior
Appeared in 31 games for the Nanooks as a junior ... Scored a career-high 19 points on two goals and another career-high of 17 assists ... In a 5-0 win at Alaska Anchorage on Dec. 1, 2023, Bergmanis tallied a career-high three points on three assists ... Tallied his first goal of the season on Oct. 21, 2023 at No. 18/20 St. Cloud State, a 5-2 Nanooks' win ... That goal was Bergmanis' lone power-play goal of the season ... Had six multi-point games this season ... Spent 39 minutes in the penalty box for 18 penalties ... Blocked 33 total shots in the season, giving him 100 in his career and more than one per game both this season and in his career (100 in 99 games) ... Blocked a season-high four shots on Dec. 16, 2023 against Augustana ... Posted a +8 plus/minus this season ... 2024 Alaska Airlines Governor's Cup Champion

Correct. If my quick tally is accurate that makes (4) right shots and (6) left

Goffredo(R), McDermott, Agnew(R), Smolinski(R), Gilson(R), Ozolins, Strom, Bergmanis, Maguire, Matta.

That’s going to make for serious competition for back line ice time. Let’s hope it translates in GAA. I hope the coaches are drilling the forwards hard on defensive assignments. Last year’s torrent of goals wasn’t just on the goaltenders and defensemen.
