RPI 2024 Off-Season: Was 2023 – 2024 Just a Bad Dream?

All of this talk about EVs is correct and absurd at the same time.
I am sure that the talk was very similar to that of the first auto, the first commercial airplane and anything else that was new.
Most of us on this board will not be around when they perfect it, but it will be perfected and used by almost all of the driving public at some time.
Until then, you won't see me in any of them.

i have a slightly different take on this technology. i think it is barking up the wrong tree and that a newer, better, safer, yet environmentally friendly invention is around the corner (or a decade away). Perhaps EV makes sense in other places (Europe where most drive short distances). But here where people think nothing of driving 700 miles in a day and a good percentage of people have to drive in a snowy cold climate, the entire idea just seems illogical. I wonder how much less of a cruising range you can expect if you live in norther Michigan, or North Dakota in the winter? Or the Adirondacks in NY for that matter. Not to mention that everything you use or turn on in the car (like your air conditioning) can deplete the battery somewhat and shorten you range. Before we commit to this EV future, perhaps we should take a look at the way people actually drive (or need to drive) to facilitate their mobility around the 50 states. Personally i think that it might be a far easier challenge to engineer old fashion gas engine cars to get 50-75mpg while still emitting almost no polluting gases than it would be to make EVs practical while also making them in an eco friendly manner. But I am certainly not an engineer although I did sleep at a Holiday Inn near an engineering Institute at times!!!

According to members of a local volunteer fire company, you don't need as much as a coastal storm with salt water nor road salt to set these stupid things off. It appears normal operation can do it by itself.

As the driver later told them, he did not have much time to spare to bring the thing to a stop and get the hell out. That is how quickly the fire spread and how quickly the entire thing was ablaze. I will take a wild guess the guy took his insurance check and put it toward a new good old fashioned internal combustion engine.

The volunteers claim that it took multiple attempts before they could knock down what was an extremely intense blaze by the time they got there. Every time they though they extinguished the fire, the damned thing reignited as if they had done absolutely nothing. Eventually, they ended up just standing there for quite some time with hoses pointed at the ready waiting to see if the thing was going to go off again, but alas, it finally apparently burned everything it could burn and did not reignite.

They claim their water usage to kill this thing was 10,000 gallons. Common sense tells you there must have also been some of that foamy stuff involved that these guys use on electric or combustible liquids fires.

To put all of this in perspective, not including the outdoor hose which is still connected to my home's original well, my last two city water bills for internal water usage covering the period 7/31/2023 to 3/31/2024 (8 months) added up to 10,000 gallons.

Conclusion: Me thinks there is no more chance of me ever getting in to one of these asinine contraptions than there is of me booking a seat on the next scheduled dive of the replacement Titan sub.

Do you know if that replacement for the Titan sub will be an EV??

Non conference schedule now appears to be pretty much a known entity with the release of the entire Atlantic Hockey schedule. It is two at Miami, two at Canisius, Maine here for two from the already known category. Today we found out about Niagara here for two and two more at Mercyhurst.

That is ten in total. Assuming the game between a Troy based team and a Schenectady based team that is played in Albany (At least on the surface sounds pretty stupid) is still on, there is only one left that we don't know.

Based off of last season, Miami was 7 - 26 with 6 of their wins OOC, we beat Canisius twice last season, Niagara was 18-18-3 overall but 5 - 8 OOC, Mercyhurst was 9-22 last season (who we beat twice two seasons ago). The stretch teams are Maine who killed us last season and Union who won 2 out of 3 games against us last season.
Compared that to last season: Maine, BC, New Hampshire, and Providence were all top teams. Minnesota State Duluth was pretty good. The only meh team was Canisius.

Overall, this year's schedule looks to be much easier OOC, no real surprise since we had a terrible record last season. On the plus side, means RPI gets some more wins. On the downside, as I have said before in this thread (please note I have no insider knowledge this is purely speculation), I suspect after last season, RPI told Smith to fix the record, or find a new team. An easier schedule could be Smith trying to make sure we have a better win record if he has little faith we can beat the better teams. Only time will tell what will happen, and I am hoping for a much better season.

I would think that we would play them in Wisconsin in 2025. Does anyone know the last time the football team played a regular season game in the midwest?

As far as I can determine, the football team has never played a regular season game west of Pennsylvania.

I could make an argument that Allegheny, whom they played in 2018, was essentially a midwestern team, considering that they were then a member of the NCAC, all of whose other members were located in Ohio or Indiana. But Allegheny was (and still is) located in Meadville, PA.

I’ve told people that you’re eventually going to see a long tube from the seats that connect to the engine, and those tubes trap human gas and will convert it. You go in the car and the car will automatically feed you baked beans, broccoli, apples, etc. The price of gas will be zero!

Thanks for the research. FWIW, Wisconsin La Crosse released its football schedule in late February. https://uwlathletics.com/news/2024/2/27/uw-la-crosse-releases-2024-football-schedule.aspx

Thanks David - no real comparison to what we faced early this past season. At least on paper we should look better after the first 10 games. The season will really depend on how we handle the ECAC schedule and what position we find ourselves in near the end of the regular season.

Smilies work again!

Smilies work again!

They do not have the appropriate one for me to express what I felt all of last season. Mad or angry did not work. I needed one for super disgusted beyond belief! (especially for short handed situations) We need to be about one goal per game better on special teams this year (whether part of it comes from our own power play - but more important from when we are short handed) to see a major difference in our overall record. Surely I would love to see some other stats improved but I think I would be satisfied mostly with just that.

How we handle the ECAC schedule in my opinion will come down to defense and Watson. Limiting shot attempts and getting more aggressive on D. Too many times, Watson was hung out to dry. A healthy Watson who puts up freshman year-like numbers will go a long way. We know he's capable. If he can find consistency and the D can pull it together, then there are reasons for optimism. Offense is another story for another time.

Last season, facing BC, Maine, and Providence all on the road to start seemed asking a bit much of this team. And then two vs. Northeastern at HFH over the Thanksgiving break. This season, with Mercyhurst, Niagara, and Canisius, the bar has been set considerably lower. There is UNH in late December, and the exhibition vs UMass, but I'd like to see more balance in the OOC portion of the schedule. Maybe getting a perennial NCAA contender on the schedule (BC, BU, or PC) each season, if possible, and then couple of teams from Atlantic Hockey.
