RPI 2024 Off-Season: Was 2023 – 2024 Just a Bad Dream?

Dr. Folsom surely did do the "Look to your left. Look to your right" thing.

I generally don't like to have my real name revealed on message boards, but I figure the chances are pretty slim that anyone else has saved the 1970 graduation program. So Ralph, if you'll promise not to tell, I'll give you a hint as to my identity.

Among the math majors who received the B. S. that year, my name was probably the best known - because the same name also belonged to somebody who was much more famous than I'll ever be.

Just to get back on topic - I think I'm safe in saying that my namesake never watched as many RPI hockey games as I have. :)

Elvis?

Another thought - I've given up all hope of Clarkson's men's team ever winning an NCAA title (or even an NCAA game). Right now, I think our goal should be an ECAC title and then anything after that is playing with house money.

Regarding the XXs - last time I went up for our reunion, then president Tony Collins mentioned that 75% of our XXs played intercollegiate sports. Is it the same at RPI?

I don't think that it is that high at RPI but certainly much higher than it was when I was there. Hopefully someone younger will comment. Am I correct that Clarkson, like when I was at RPI, doesn't have a football team with more than 100 on the roster?

As it relates to our conversations re: HFH, I noticed that Colgate is set to begin construction of a new $65 mil BB/VB facility to replace their Carey Ath. Ctr. which dates to 1959. A $23mil donation got the ball rolling with the project. Can't help but think RPI could unveil a very similar project....IF the motivation is there with the admin and high powered alums.

If she would only hock her jewelry it could be possible! My dad had advised me to marry a rich girl who can cook. He said anything else I could want i would be able to find elsewhere! And I followed his advice, I married a rich girl - I married her for MY money! (capitalization done on purpose)

It must be nice to have a tiny school with a sizeable endowment because half the class are children of Wall Street and will follow a similar path. They are building a facility barely bigger than the ECAV arena for a Division 1 basketball team. The Class of '65 hockey rink is very nice, but it's the smallest new one I've seen (OK, I haven't seen Bentley's probably even smaller building but they were moving from a municipal rink that had, being generous, about 1,000 seats). They've got money and no need to build large, expensive facilities. That's a pretty good combination if you want a new building.

RPI's Board of Trustees is a who's who of Big Tech, Private Equity and Corporate Officers. Hell, the Board Vice Chair Curtis Priem founded NVIDIA -- a company with a value somewhere north of $150 Billion.

Point being, if the decision was made to build a new rink, these guys and gals could raise plenty of money in a short period of time. In their world, $70-80 million is pocket change....Raising a sizable percentage of the total cost would be easily accomplished by those folks. Question being, is there interest in doing so ??

FWIW -- Colgate's '65 rink seats 2,000 for hockey -- it was very tastefully done and fits in very well on the campus. Also, Union's new rink will seat 2,200 for hockey -- these are smart decisions in not over building a facility given historic attendance patterns.

On that note you may find the article below from a few months back interesting. Priem was in my class at RPI but I don’t remember ever meeting him. That’s too bad - and not just because he went on to found a company that seems to be picking up every free investment dollar in the worldwide equity markets. He seems like a pretty eclectic and fascinating guy. One of my apartment mates played trombone in the band. They might have known each other. One degree from …….

It's a beautiful rink and quite sufficient in size for a school that's well under 1/2 the size of RPI in a town that's less than 10% the population of Troy (much less the rest of the Capital District). Rinks do seem to be getting smaller as attendance in college sports has declined. UConn's new rink is about 2,800. SHU's is only slightly larger - they claim that it "seats 3,600", but that would have to include standing room, the teams, the employees, etc. (and perhaps the people stopping at the Merritt Parkway rest area that sits near the old GE helipad below the rink). If RPI does build a new arena it won't even be in the neighborhood of the HFH capacity. I'd expect something within a few hundred (plus or minus) of 3K with some standing room potential - similar to those above and the M&T Bank rink at Quinnipiac.

I think the Ralph Baer Pavillion at the JennyRN and drd Field House is most fitting. :p

We would make areas available for rental to anyone who has an interest. Since Ralph is like a founding father around here he would get a rather large discount of course! Seriously, right at this time I feel the school needs a new modern facility but that it might be unwise to do this in the very near term. Interest rates, inflation, etc. are just not stable enough and might not be until some time after the upcoming election. Perhaps what happens in November will not make any difference but personally I am not willing to place that bet and would withhold any major financial commitment or taking on any major debt until I see how things work out. Just my opinion and I freely admit that my expertise is mostly medical in nature but I am not sure we have enough information that we can trust to make major financial judgements at this time.
