RPI 2024 Off-Season: Was 2023 – 2024 Just a Bad Dream?

One more problem with P5 is title 9.
Any money spent on men's teams must also go to women's teams.
I am in favor of title 9, I am just pointing out the financial situation

Isn't this weighted by the percentage of the general student body which is female? That is, if the general student population is 1/4 female, the women players receive 1/3 as much as the men. (I don't know what "the ratio" at RPI is currently.)

Certainly higher than when you or i were attending!

there was a saying when I was at the Tute that we’re not proud of today. “Women at RPI are like parking spaces, they’re either taken or handicapped”. Dont ask, because I don’t have the answer.

If the RPI men of that time considered the RPI women of that time that saying, then that most certainly begs a question.

Exactly what did the RPI men of that time consider themselves??? Could it have been the singularly most sexually dynamic males in the entire recorded chronicle of male sex!!! Or was it just Adonis's or Greek Gods!!!

Had anyone ever bothered checking if the RPI women of that time had a saying about the RPI men of that time, I seriously doubt it would have been either of the above.

There are several ways in dealing with Title IX though for you to think the issue has to deal with having a women team is not the starting point.
Many other issues well before that and obvious those are not being considered or brought up

During my time at RPI there would have not been enough women to even conduct the poll. IIRC almost the only women I saw during that time were the picture in the 'Bachelor' magazine which was published I think quarterly!

I think it was published 3 times a year; for Homecoming, Saturnalia, and Soiree.

It's amazing how much things changed over the roughly 15 year period between your entry and mine. We still had a low percentage of XX chromosomes (I think my entering class was somewhere in the 15%-20% range), but women were in every course I took over 4 years and we didn't have the Bachelor magazine, Saturnalia or Soiree. I think even the famous "movies" of GM Week were on the way out by the time I graduated.

I don't know the rules for P5, but where is this money supposed to come from?
Looking at the ECAC, I don't see a school that generates enough money to pay hockey players.
The Ivies might, but I don't see them paying for athletes.
And HE is not far behind. BC can generate funds from its football team, but is that enough to pay players in any other sports.
Most hockey programs are in the same boat. As far as I can see, only the Big Ten has schools that can pay for it.
So how is this going to work? If only a few programs can afford to pay athletes, where does that leave college hockey in general?

The devil will be in the details, so it is hard to predict, but what will happen is certainly anyone's guess. I assume the non-revenue sport athletes at the Power 5 schools are going to be interested in a share of the action. You also have labor law and unionization issues (see Dartmouth) that could impact what happens. I wonder what the impact will be on scholarship limits, which would be relevant for DI hockey. I wouldn't be surprised to see caps lifted. These are soft-dollar costs, and free school is a form of compensation. Another issue, as others have highlighted, is whether some schools will make decisions to reduce numbers of sports or drop to Division II/III.

I entered in the Fall of 1964 and left in 1974 after finally completing my PhD and avoiding Viet Nam (without flat feet). While in grad school I taught freshman and sophomore math courses. The number of undergraduate women was definitely slowly rising throughout my stay in Troy. I am too lazy to dig out my grade books to see if there was always at least one woman in each class I taught although there definitely were some with exactly one.

I think that Bachelor magazine, Saturnalia, and Soiree all disappeared while I was at RPI. GM week evolved during my stay. The strippers hired by the political parties who performed inside or outside of the HFH depending upon the weather disappeared early in my grad years. (No loss really since most were far from attractive.) I don't recall if and when the free lousy beer disappeared, probably because I couldn't participate being a TA.

I entered in the fall of 1966. I can remember Dr. Folsom addressing our incoming class at the Field House and citing the statistic that there were 1,029 of us - of whom 28 were female.

My copy of the Transit shows that seven of those 28 wound up as math majors and I'm pretty sure no other major accounted for as many.

I guess if you wanted to meet women, the math department was the place to be.

We had 23 females entering, but several were in the 6 year MD program. They didn't graduate with us. I can recall 3 females in the math department.

Did Folsom (or someone else) also say "Look to the left. Look to the right. One of the three will not be graduate"? That was true in my case.

As this thread continues to go off topic, it dawned on me that i received my MS in 1970 when Waite21 received his BS. Of the six females receiving BS's in math listed in the Graduation Program, I knew three, one well since she had the same advisor in grad school I did, but she left with an MS. A woman also received a BS in February 1970.

Edit: Of course, I can't find anyone named Waite.

Dr. Folsom surely did do the "Look to your left. Look to your right" thing.

I generally don't like to have my real name revealed on message boards, but I figure the chances are pretty slim that anyone else has saved the 1970 graduation program. So Ralph, if you'll promise not to tell, I'll give you a hint as to my identity.

Among the math majors who received the B. S. that year, my name was probably the best known - because the same name also belonged to somebody who was much more famous than I'll ever be.

Just to get back on topic - I think I'm safe in saying that my namesake never watched as many RPI hockey games as I have. :)

We got the look to your left, look to your right speech, but for the life of me I can’t remember who said it. There used to be a sort of perverse pride going through a meat grinder. Now schools do everything they can for student retention.

I think I figured it out.

This was the first message board I joined. In later ones, I did not use my name.
