RPI 2024–25: Come for the Hockey, Stay for the Football

On the UMass audio stream, they mentioned partway through the third period (I believe) that it was agreed beforehand that they would do a penalty shootout, regardless of the result - but with the score tied 1-1, the game was heading that direction anyway.

At one point in the first period, I could swear they commented that the audio had gone to a commercial break too quickly and during that time RPI had a penalty shot that was saved. But I can find no evidence of that in any of the write-ups, so wondering what alternative reality I was living in.

You were not in an altered state - from someone at the game, a penalty shot was awarded but the goalie made the save when it was taken. I might be able to get more specifics tomorrow.

I was away this weekend and was only able to see the final score of the exhibition game.
Nice to see the team hold someone to only one goal in over 60 minutes. Ince again, offense is going to be a challenge it seems.
The Smith interview was really good. We seem to have some talented players joining the defensive side of the ice. And the goal tending looks good.
Also, the lack of chemistry last year say a lot about the team and should be correctable.
If Smith is correct, we should at least be able to compete with anyone.
I'm looking forward to the season as usual.

Payant got stopped on a penalty shot.

That is a bit of a premature conclusion to deem the defense fixed and the offense an issue after one exhibition game without Muzzatti

College Hockey News ECAC preview has us picked 12th. I think they obviously are a year late with their prediction and that for next year they should plan to pick us for at least 4-5 positions higher.

Thanks for the help JBGoode441. That link did not seem to provide anything that solved the problem. Yes, Stretch was the place to go last year, and hopefully it will work this year. But I find it odd that neither the men's nor women's schedules provide a link for international viewers the way that they did last year. It is not just an RPI issue...seems to be a problem on other teams' schedules. I still haven't found a way to watch either a men's or women's game this year :(.

Still struggling with this. It is not obvious to me how a viewer in Canada can watch RPI men's or women's games. In previous years they made it so simple with a link, on the schedules page, for international viewers. There must be MANY Canadians who want to watch NCAA hockey, and maybe most are more prepared than I am to sort through the intricacies to get connected. If they can't make it user friendly for me, I will just pass on watching the games.

As always everything comes down to money. Will take a wild guess that the international link that existed in the past simply did not generate enough revenue to keep doing it.

Domestically, would not shock me one little bit if ESPN+ eventually drops the games of individual programs and/or conferences that also do not generate enough revenue. Whenever or wherever that may be the case, why would the ESPN companies continue to pay whatever they pay for the rights to those games if they don't generate either enough viewers or cash.

And then RPI-TV could broadcast again. Assuming that their charge was reasonable (whatever that may mean), I would gladly pay them. I don't really have interest in the current set up.

I think the broadcast itself is great, but I miss having the library of games up on youtube. To my knowledge they just disappear in ESPN. Was fun to fire up an old, nostalgic game on RPI tv before

I believe your understandable gripe is with the league. The ECAC (and others) made the deal with the devil (ESPN) for the broadcast rights to the games. The local teams provide the feed (RPI TV) with local announcers and ESPN sends it out for consumption by the "masses"...

I predict a sweep! 2 close games that we win but only if our defense can hold them to 2 or less (which I think we can)

Love your spirit Doc! My last trip to WNY to watch RPI was at Niagara and they got run out of the barn.... we never made it off the bus ! Ha ha Here's hoping we earn a sweep !

I am not convinced yet about our scoring potential but for me that is the easier part of the game. Defense and especially special teams play is simply crucial for us. If we can win most special team situations we will win many of our games. Face offs and fundamentals are another key and that remains to be seen. But I cannot fathom that we perform like last year. Communication on the ice should be improved, at least we have 3 boys who can speak the same language!!

Good back half of the game for the boys. If we are going to have a better season we need to play 60 minutes. At least 3 wins (and really 4) in our 2 opening AH weekends is essential to develop momentum.

i see that John Evans is playing at Lindenwood and had 2 assists in their upset of Wisconsin. Is that new info or am I just late to the party?

For the football fans - in a game that the score truly did not represent the action RPI won over SLU 34-10. This one was in doubt until late as SLU seemed to be able to complete passes all day long. We put virtually no pressure on their QB and his receivers were able to out jump and out reach our defenders. Our defense against the run was quite good and our own running attack generated considerable yardage. But this one was close until the 4th quarter and we were fortunate to be able to run up the score late. SLU is not a bad team as evidenced by their OT win over Union last week. This Liberty League is simply crazy with any team able to beat any other team on any given day. RPI is now 3-3 overall and 1-1 in league play with a trip to a very tough Ithaca team next week.
This weekend has been quite successful so far with both the men's and women's hockey winning yesterday and football posting a win today. 2 games left as both hockey teams are in action shortly and winning both those games could make this one of the best sports weekends in a very long time. Go Red!!!

It's worth mentioning that the clinching score in today's football game came on a play you don't see every day - a 99-yard pick-lateral-six.

An RPI defender (Lapioli) intercepted a pass at his own one-yard line, returned it to the St. Lawrence 35 and then, as he was about to be tackled, lateraled to the big defensive tackle, # 94 (Sicard - and credit to him for hustling all the way down the field on the play), who took it the rest of the way for the touchdown.
