RPI 2024–25: Come for the Hockey, Stay for the Football

Yeh, I know I'm the enemy, but some things are much bigger than rivalries.

Devastating news regarding Matt DuBrey, radio and TV voice of Union College Hockey for the past 22 years. Please consider donating. Every little bit of help matters!

The only enemy here is Cancer/Leukemia. Sending positive thoughts Matt’s way.

Still struggling with this. It is not obvious to me how a viewer in Canada can watch RPI men's or women's games. In previous years they made it so simple with a link, on the schedules page, for international viewers. There must be MANY Canadians who want to watch NCAA hockey, and maybe most are more prepared than I am to sort through the intricacies to get connected. If they can't make it user friendly for me, I will just pass on watching the games.

The international link now exists on the athletics web page on the far right of the men's hockey schedule. Only guessing but, it may not have been available last week due to Canisius' deal being with FloSports rather than ESPN+.

I thought it was a pretty much evenly played game with two good goalies. It is, however, pretty difficult to stay in the game and give yourself a chance to win if one of your players puts you on the PK for 9 minutes and shortens the bench with a game misconduct. Especially when you commit the major penalty with 0.6 seconds remaining in the period. Let’s see how Smith deals with Hotson. I assume he is ineligible tonight? Personally, I’d sit him out a few games to let him think things over a bit.

This is not exactly a critical question. I was thinking about changing the way points are awarded in the thread-starting" stats. The ideal thing would be to use what the ECAC does, but to change all wins to 3 points in regulation, etc. would be impossible since the historical data won't match, and it would take a tremendous amount of effort, if it is even possible, to figure out which wins were in OT and which losses were in OT 20 years ago. Perhaps we should award 2 points for a win in regulation or OT, and none for a loss in reg or OT. Shoot outs would count as a tie in any case. Comments? Other suggestions?

I'm in favor of your suggestion - two points for a win in regulation or OT, no points for a loss in regulation or OT, and one point for a tie or a shootout, regardless of which team wins the shootout. I think that's the fairest way to go about it.

If RPI wins in a shootout, the person who started that game's thread may have the privilege of starting the next one, but no extra point in the thread-starting stats.

Just an observation about last nights game.
Niagara is quick and they have very active sticks. RPI couldn't stay with them for two periods. And it lead to over 40 shots on goal for the second night in a row.
We were undisciplined. Not just the penalties, but running around on the ice. Out of position most of the night.
That being said, they never gave up and played till the end.
If they keep giving up 40 shots, we will get killed in the ECAC. JMO

What a bizarre game last night. While I have to give Niagara credit for playing well, I also have to say I give RPI credit to battle back in the 3rd to make it to a tie. When a defensemen has to play as a forward, I am sure it throws off the lines. Having said that, the refs sure did their part to prevent us from getting anything going. Niagara ‘s captain kept talking and laughing to the refs any chance he got. RPI ‘s 1st goal was clearly offsides, but I take it given we were screwed over other times. I hope the injuries to our forwards heal quick. I was happy to see Hotson learned his lesson from Friday. If we can get dumb penalties under control, we will have a much better chance of winning.

The refs sucked last night. Total clown show
Niagara is good. I said a few months ago Niagara and Miami will not be easy games.

Agreed. I like the compete of this team much better than last year. However undisciplined penalties being out of position is unacceptable. Especially with a very veteran team. They play like that next week and union will sweep them. Union can score in bunches. Now is the time to get that shit out of the system

They need some health up front. Being down Tinling, Muzzatti, Tonelli, Bourgault, and Sullivan is a lot to overcome. Weird weekend, hopefully they can learn some lessons from it

Does anyone know of a time line for the walking wounded to return?
That is a lot of talent that will make a difference in the ECAC.

Hotson absolutely cost them the first game. How on earth he dressed for Saturday night's game is beyond me. I love the kid's game, but when you hurt your team to that extent, a message needs to be sent. Period. As has been mentioned here already, the officiating was horrible...not in one team's favor really just bad. Repeated inability to conduct a face off or recognize an off-sides, etc. Gonna be a long year for spectators if that's the level of officiating we get.
