RPI 2024–25: Come for the Hockey, Stay for the Football

It's worth mentioning that the clinching score in today's football game came on a play you don't see every day - a 99-yard pick-lateral-six.

An RPI defender (Lapioli) intercepted a pass at his own one-yard line, returned it to the St. Lawrence 35 and then, as he was about to be tackled, lateraled to the big defensive tackle, # 94 (Sicard - and credit to him for hustling all the way down the field on the play), who took it the rest of the way for the touchdown.

Yes indeed - a once in a lifetime kind of play. I actually thought Lapioli might have been too close to the sidelines and that he might go out of bounds before the lateral but the replay showed he was in bounds and the play was legal. This game just never felt like the scoreboard was showing as SLU just was completing so many passes to so many totally wide open receivers. And their offensive line was giving their QB all the time in the world to find an open man. We had better sharpen up a bit as we play Ihaca next and that huge 300+ pound offensive line.

What I liked most about this weekends games is the number of players hitting the score sheet.
In last night game alone, we had 8 different goal scorers and 12 different players with at least one assist.
A real team effort.
Special team play wasn't too shabby either.

Early odds for next week - Football we are a 9.5 point underdog to Ithaca which may be our toughest game left on the schedule. Hockey- Girls are a 0.5 goal favorite over RIT although that may be optimistic given the fact that RIT has beaten powerhouse Colgate this season and we have yet to find scoring from the front lines to go with a really steady defensive group that has accounted for a good percentage of our goals. Boys are a 0.5 goal favorite over Niagara. It is still very early in the season for odds makers to have a good idea about this year's teams given the massive number of line up changes. As an example - during the girls game with Syracuse it was mentioned that 13 girls that were on last year's team were no longer there while there were 14 new faces on the team for this year.

I feel I learned a bit as a fan from last year. I was a little too focused on the top end of the roster, which I liked with Muzz Watson Hotson Heidemann Brushett Sertti etc. That team turned out to just have no depth at all. They got no contributions from the bottom 6 ever. Maybe this time of year all that we should be focused on is seeing depth contributions, because we know once Muzzatti is healthy (which should be in a few weeks max), the core with him Hotson Smolinski etc will contribute. Encouraging start

Never thought I would ever see this again, but according to College Hockey News, RPI is #1 in Goals per Game in the nation!
I know it’s incredibly early and it was against Canisius, but it’s still good to see… LGR!

I would suspect our goals per shot percentage is pretty good also! An d yes it is incredibly early but after last year, I will be in a celebratory mood for at least the next 5 days based simply on the results of the first weekend. And 4 hockey wins and a football victory all on the same weekend is a rather uplifting experience!

Yes, somewhat encouraged and enthused by this weekends results. Especially when considering the hole this program was put in throughout this decade by certain institution individual(s). Hopefully, a second climb (much like the first one) out of a big hole can be pulled off by the current leader of the program.

However, a word of caution. The out of conference record thus far for the Atlantic Hockey (A/K/A Titanic Hockey???) Conference appears to be 3-20-2.

I totally agree with everything you say.
However, it has been years since the previous administration and their lack of hockey enthusiasm went bye bye.
I think it is time to look to the future and let the past go.

2 games and each with different scorers. And just as many assisting on those goals. A most impressive weekend . Next weekend should tell us a great deal about this team. And then it’s home and home with Union. So by the end of the month we should have a pretty good idea of how excited we should be.

Mostly agree. we will learn some next weekend but the Niagara games may not give us much more than we already know from this past weekend. the home and home with Union however, that is a different story. Those games have become a very good gauge for what the season could look like. The prediction s all have Cornell and Quinnipiac as the class of our league and there is no argument from e about that. Most are predicting a log jam for the next 6-8 slots in the league standings and then a couple falling bellow that middle morass. Union should be in that middle pack and if we are to rise in the standings we will need to show 2 strong efforts against them if we have any feeling about also being considered in the middle tier.
I like what I have READ about our team so far but I have not been able to even listen to a game let alone watch them in action. I cannot even venture a worthwhile opinion until I have the chance to see them for a least a game or two. But that has not stopped me from at least having a much better feeling here in mid October 2024 than I had last year when Jenny and I were fighting off the ending of Thelma and Louise!! One of thin gs that stopped us is her car is just too valuable to go off a cliff with!

Great start for the team - I'm hopeful for the first time in a few seasons. Although it has "been a couple of years" since the administration change, it does take time for rosters to change over and recruits to show up. So the comments about moving beyond the Shirley years are still relevant IMO.

Not sure this thread title is going to wear well though! I suspect no one will be upset if it doesn't.

We can simply switch the two sports in the title!

Won't be upset at all. :) Perhaps we should have used this title a few years ago. :D

Still struggling with this. It is not obvious to me how a viewer in Canada can watch RPI men's or women's games. In previous years they made it so simple with a link, on the schedules page, for international viewers. There must be MANY Canadians who want to watch NCAA hockey, and maybe most are more prepared than I am to sort through the intricacies to get connected. If they can't make it user friendly for me, I will just pass on watching the games.

It was mentioned earlier, but have you considered a VPN? (NordVPN is a common provider) An additional cost, but a legal way to have your computer tell ESPN that you are watching from the United States, as well as some potential security benefits for your internet surfing in general.

i see that John Evans is playing at Lindenwood and had 2 assists in their upset of Wisconsin. Is that new info or am I just late to the party?

We covered it briefly in the off-season thread (link below) when he and a few other former Engineers found landing spots. Evans was the one player RPI was losing that I thought might have something to offer offensively this year, but he had trouble getting into the lineup last season for reasons that were not clear to me. Good to hear he is finding some early success.

Agree with you, Doc. Let's see how the Union weekend plays out, but I am upbeat that RPI will be more competitive than last year. A good performance vs UMass, albeit an exhibition, and a lot of goals the following weekend (although Canisius looks like it has a goaltending issue). Regardless, certainly a better start than those Maine games last year in which RPI looked as overmatched as I can remember.

Thanks David, and others. I will go the VPN route. Looking forward to watching both the men's and women's teams. Haven't seen a single game yet this year, which is highly unusual for me. Pleased to see the men are off to a strong start. The women's results have been unimpressive (4-2 against teams that were ranked lower than them last year) but I think they are better than their record suggests.

Do not confuse Syracuse this year with the team from last year. They lost 13 players at the end of last year and replaced them with 14 new ladies from the portal as transfers and with a freshman class. They are markedly improved. Defensively our girls are actually playing extremely well. Still need to find scoring from the forwards. The games I have been able to see so far have been really fascinating hard fought contests.

The Syracuse weekend was less concerning than splits with Holy Cross and Sacred Heart. But we should take this to the other thread.

Smith said in a recent interview that there was a lack of chemistry in the clubhouse.
In my mind that means a couple of unhappy players causing trouble.
I thought that we had more talent last year than was seen on the ice. Trouble in the clubhouse can easily cause that.
It would seem that this team is already past that we should see a much better performance on the ice.
I hope that I am right.
