RPI 2024–25: Come for the Hockey, Stay for the Football

I hope Tinling comes back! He makes things happen. Did anybody catch the interview with Dan Bahl? I was late getting on his broadcast, so I did not catch everything, but he was talking about what happened last Saturday against Niagara. I guess the PA announcers did not correctly inform the crowd on what was going on. He also made a comment on the fact that you can get another challenge in overtime. I am still confused!

The Sat. end of game scenario was an officiating SH--show. After watching it live, with ZERO information from the PA announcer I went back to watch the replay. By my count it was just shy of 10 minute of officiating confusion and replay review.... horrible. Hockey East has gone to mic'ing their refs....time for ECAC to follow suit....especially if the home PA announcer can't be bothered to provide information to the faithful... more of the same unfortunately.

You’re assuming the PA announcer knew or was told what was going on. Given the way that officiating team handled everything I have my doubts.

As I recall, there is a trophy called the Capital Skates awarded to the winner of the two-game ECAC series between RPI and Union. RPI won it in 2021-22 by virtue of sweeping the two games, and retained it each of the last two years by splitting the two games. The Mayors' Trophy game does not count in regard to who gets the Capital Skates.

With RPI having lost the first game of this year's series, I'm wondering what happens if RPI wins on Saturday, but not in regulation. I have a hard time at the beginning of each season remembering how the ECAC's goofy points system works nowadays, but I'm pretty sure that if a team loses in overtime or a shootout, they get a point.

So if RPI wins on Saturday in overtime or a shootout, do they retain the Capital Skates because each team won one game? Or does Union gain possession because they got four points in the ECAC standings while RPI got only three?

Don't know a thing about what the winner of the home and home conference games series is declared, if anything. A third non conference played in Albany is for something called the Mayor's Cup. Occasionally and like it or not, some locally based fans sarcastically and with contempt refer to it as the "Ghetto Cup" on account of the area bordering that particular arena.

Ironically, the derogatory term for the game appears to have known no boundaries. Almost two decades ago I began a job at an the organization I would eventually retire from that employed a sizeable number of people from the Schenectady area. A number were both college hockey fans and Union season ticket holders. Naturally, there was soon courteous coffee machine conversations about college hockey. During one of those conversations I referred to the Albany game with the above term which made them burst out laughing hysterically. Turns out these guys who I had never met in my life before going to work where they worked called the game THE EXACT SAME THING!!! Conversely, they had absolutely no idea people from the other side of the river used the term too!!!

As for the Capital Skates Trophy itself (the forerunner to the Mayor's Cup Trophy), according to a long time and now deceased RPI Athletics Department employee, the fate of the older trophy is a complete unknown. One day, while it was in RPI's possession, it was there on display and the next day it was not. Obviously, it was pretty accepted universal dogma that the thing was just plain and simple swiped by someone!!!

Then there was the saga of the bumblebee outfit worn by the long ago retired RPI mascot known as The Swarm. It too vanished without a trace.

Seems like it is, or at least once was, fairly easy for people to abscond with stuff belonging to RPI!!!

Question??? If anyone ever tries to sell this stuff on EBAY are they going to the pokey or has the statute run out???

Well when Union went up 2-0 I thought it was going to be a blowout. I was impressed with RPI’s comeback. I thought Muzzatti looked good and they played a fast game. But when the other team scores 6 goals, 4 on the power play, and 1 en, the message should come through to stay out of the box. And I don’t recall a team taking so many major penalties in consecutive games before. The other take away for me is Rainers Rullers is going to be a lot of fun to watch for the next 4 years ( if he stays that long). Lastly I watched the women’s game on tv and they are playing well. Fun to watch. Disciplined. And they are fun to watch. I’m going to Troy this afternoon and skipping Schenectady tonight.

Except for the first five minutes and last five minutes of the game, we played well.
When you win a faceoff killing a penalty and can't get the puck out of the zone, it leads to the tying goal. And Union used that to go on and score the winning goal.
This team has had trouble getting the puck out of their defensive zone in all of their games.
Practice practice practice.

Not a good weekend on the pk for sure. Now is the time to correct the problem before it festers into last year’s disaster.

Wicked Slappahs was right when he talked about sitting players who made some undisciplined choices. The penalties killed them ths weekend. Also, as you state, beware of Miami they're better than the last few years.

I thought the 3rd period performance was great, but it was erased by 3 minutes of asleep defensive play. The Union power play goal was the type that has to infuriate coaches; a simple tap in by a player standing between two RPI defenders. The winning goal was a bit of a fluke, but I thought RPI lacked some defensive attitude there; there was an opportunity to clamp that rush down and RPI let Union have a little too much room to operate.

I did like the attitude at the end of the game, RPI had two chances to tie it late despite being a man down; the first of the two was a point blank chance that really needs to be buried.

11 penalties in two games.... You aren't going to beat LaSalle's boys team with that nonsense. The sad thing is, we are right back here discussing the same things we were last year....bad penalties, giving up early goals, PK challenges... lather, rinse, repeat. That is coaching folks...can't sugar coat it !

I wasn't able to watch either game, so I can't comment. But my RPI dose of reality came in the car Friday afternoon listening to AD Bowers on the Dan Bahl drivetime show, where she spent several minutes spreading sweetness and light about how great things are in athletics...highlighted by her pride in getting chocolate milk and granola donated for the student athletes. Seriously ? I almost drove off the road listening to this garbage. ARE YOU KIDDING ME ????. If you listen closely, you can hear Quinnipiac, Cornell, Union, etc. LAUGHING AT US. We're a laughing stock folks...plain and simple. Kills me to say it, but that is our reality.

I had high hopes for this new AD coming from a blue chip hockey school. But if this is a peek behind the curtain into the state of RPI Athletics then we are in worse shape than any of us feared..... we're bumbling our way back to D3 hockey.

No doubt about it. Set the tone that kind of play will not be tolerated. Miami will be a tough series. Miami hired Anthony Noreen who is a very good coach.

Maybe bowers can join smith on Tuesday’s at 11:40 were she can answer the heavy questions like how we looking between the pipes? Well roger what I can tell you is we have free granola and yogurt bars so all is right in the world. Nevermind the dumpster fire that is rpi hockey.

You forgot the merlot and chardonnay at $8.50 a small plastic glass. Don't consume any kind of alcohol myself but have a very wine literate relative who has a whole stockpile of the stuff at her home in a wine cellar no less. Ran the "brand" they want $8.50 for by her to see if this was or was not some sort of con. It's a little of both. The brand is not exactly the Cold Duck of wines but it is absolutely nowhere near the top of the wine food chain either. It is most definitely not a brand anyone dining out at a better restaurant would either ask for and/or pay roughly the same price for. Not a chance!!!

WS, I definitely hear you on this. I agree - a year ago we were indeed talking about staying out of the box, tightening up the D, and playing the full 60 minutes.

As for Dr. Bowers's comments on the radio: first, I didn't hear it so I am relying only on your account. That said, I wouldn't expect any AD to go on a local radio talk show and air the dirty laundry. I wouldn't draw any firm conclusions based on where we are now or what she's talking about on the radio in late October. My guess is she's going to look at the overall body of work at the end of the season.

Noreen may be a very good coach, but Miami hasn't exactly been playing like a juggernaut in the early season. They got swept by Robert Morris, 4-1 and 5-1, weekend before last.

I hope you are right...but the early returns aren't good IMO. In business, adages like "If you aren't growing you're dying..." are common place. What exactly is RPI growing in the men's and women's programs ? That's question I'd ask the AD if given the chance. Well, that and WHAT THE HECK HAPPENED TO THE HFH STUDY THAT YOU AND MARTY WERE TRUMPETING LAST YEAR ??" There's been zero public mention of it ....which is really what galls me the most. The faithful are treated as something to be managed or tolerated.....there is no outreach or efforts to connect or grow the fanbase. End of today's rant. Back into my hole I crawl....
