RPI 2024–25: Come for the Hockey, Stay for the Football

Noreen may be a very good coach, but Miami hasn't exactly been playing like a juggernaut in the early season. They got swept by Robert Morris, 4-1 and 5-1, weekend before last.

Definitely not a juggernaut but much improved from past seasons. RPI needs to bring their A game. Currently we stand as the second most penalized team in the country while also letting in 4 goals a game. Can’t win like that

Folks should read that a few times ......and let it sink in....marinate if you will....LOL. All of that, and I had to listen to our coach on Wyland's show talk about how good our Corsi was in Game 2 vs. Union. OH vay...

With no hockey game this week, I'll sneak a football post in here.

In the category of "Who saw that one coming?" RPI's next opponent, Buffalo State, who, with the exception of a blowout win over woebegone Hilbert, hadn't scored more than 12 points in a game this season, lit up the scoreboard for 35 and beat Rochester by two touchdowns last Saturday.

The Bengals may not be as easy an opponent as we had been anticipating they would be.

A few points of interest from Smitty's weekly talk on Wyland's show:

-He's on the road recruiting (he left directly from Ohio)

-He was very happy with the team's preparation & mindset following the Union losses
-Watson was nursing a minor "issue" (he didn't want to call it an injury), so Giesbrecht got the nod both nights
-Still "banged up" up front, trying to get some guys healthy... no details
-Very happy with team mentality and effort -- mentioned the 4th line as an example (Tapper / Payant / Matta)
- Will Gilson ECAC defender of the week

I am not too sure what to make of this season so far. I guess most of it has been good. I was discouraged by Union weekend but maybe they are better than we thought. It has felt really hard to get a fair measurement of this team when Muzzatti Tinling Tonelli (3 top 6 guys) have missed so much time

Agreed. Hopefully with the time off they'll be back to full strength vs. CCT. Also, wasn't it mentioned the Hotson left a game last weekend and didn't return ??

Is he doing the circuit of OHL cities or is he talking to the B10, HE and NCHC commits that are going to be abandoned while those teams chase the CHL kids? I'd expect some of those schools can offer better "salaries" (NIL) than the ECHL.

Really good point! NCAA recruiting has just become a lot more complex.
