RPI 2024–25: Come for the Hockey, Stay for the Football

I'll be visiting my son next weekend and my beloved bride and I will be taking in the CCT-RPI game.

It's been a few years since I've been to Houston. What are the parking rules these days and how much?

park in the doctor’s office lot halfway up the hill. No charge, easy in easy out

RPI's football team scored on a blocked punt off Buffalo State's opening series and rolled to a 17-0 first quarter lead, en route to a 48-7 victory. Whatever magic the Bengals had going for them last week against Rochester utterly deserted them today.

We could hardly ask for a better set of traditional rivals than those that will be coming to Troy next weekend - Clarkson and St. Lawrence in hockey and Union in football.

You need a season pass to get into the lots that are adjacent to Houston Field House, and I believe those are still limited to season ticket holders. If you can walk up the hill easily, just park on Peoples Avenue or in one of the Samaritan Hospital lots. The lot that jericho refers to is available, but can fill up early. Not sure if the shuttle from the alumni house lot still runs.

Times - Union article on the NCAA /CHL player decision with quotes from Smith and Hauge. Interesting thoughts from Hauge on the commitment programs make to kids and the moral decisions schools will have to make -- whether to stick with a kid who committed to you, vs. bumping them for a CHL player who might be more talented.

Smith was indeed scouting some CHL players following the Miami series.

"...I haven’t been home yet, I hit the recruiting trail,” Smith said while he was in Ontario, Canada. “We knew it was a strong likelihood of it happening. We began to build behind-the-scenes recruitment with coaches, GMs and scouts in the business prior to the decision and started watching games on film and we were very prepared for the decision that came out on Thursday.”

The shuttle still runs. Since giving up season tickets I find it the only viable option for parking. The only drawback to this option is that you have to book it for the trip back after the game. The shuttle leaves very shortly after the game and there is only one run. Miss it and it's a long walk to the Alumni House.

The Burdett Medical Building lot right below the Fieldhouse fills up well before the game time as do the diagonal parking spaces on Sunset Terrace on top of the hill above the Fieldhouse. Most people just don't want to get there that early.

Not sure I would bleep around parking in the privately owned lots at Samaritan Hospital. At least not without checking with them first.

Essentially, there are no longer anywhere near enough season ticket holders to fill all four Fieldhouse parking lots of various sizes. However, they know how many season ticket passes they sold and how many spots are allocated for their invited guests and/or (as Clyde Frazier often says) "the luminaries who are luminaten". Most of those groups are probably in the suite.

Obviously, they also know how many parking spots are left that they can collect in cash whatever they are charging for parking these days. Dah!!!, just sell the damned things and pocket a few hundred hundred bucks per game. A few grand over the course of a season.

Not hard!!! Trust me, I know for sure there are always plenty of spots left as I just pull into one whenever I arrive late for a game long after the lot attendants are long gone. Usually happens October through January whenever Alabama, Ole Miss and sometimes Georgia draw the 3:30/4:00 P.M. regular season game or post season bowl game. Oops!!! Make the latter games in the case of SEC programs!!!

Seriously, over the course of years more than a few local sports fans have mentioned to me that they would like to attend a game or two here and there. However, the thing that keeps them away is what a hassle the parking is at that place. It simply does not have to be that way.

What do we know about this weeks opponents?
They haven't played a league game yet, and judging by their OOC records, they look rather average.
Of course, they always give us a tough game.
Any thoughts on what to expect?

RPI has had time to hopefully get a few guys healthy and healed up. They should be ready to go...time will tell. Who Smitty starts in net is a question after two road wins with Giesbrecht in net.
First period goals killed RPI vs. Union...if they do that again tomorrow, it'll be a long night.

Clarkson is 3-0 on the road so far with wins at UVM (1) and Mich. Tech (2). Common opponents: Wins vs. Canisius and Niagara. LSSU xfer keeper Langenegger has been good.

SLU is winless on the road with losses at PSU (2) and Stonehill (1). Common opponents: Wins vs. Canisius and Niagara. Lapointe, Mazura and Gavars lead them in scoring

This mentions 5 schools which may move to D-I. One is Hobart. If that happens there will be 6 Liberty League teams in D-I. I wonder if that would mean that the league would decide that there must be in their own league. I hope not.

"You miss 100% of the shots you don't take." - Wayne Gretzky.

Missed tonight's game because I don't have ESPN plus, but was watching the online stat cast. Looked like RPI had an off night. Not really surprised since i was predicting Clarkson would come out ready for vengeance after we knocked them out in a round 1 upset last year.

I have one concern though. On the stat cast it says we only got 3 shots on goal in the second? Is this accurate. If it is, that's really, really bad. We're never going to win if we don't outscore the other team, and outscoring the other team is a lot harder when you only take 3 shots on goal in a period.

Audio was on WRPI on line. Since that was what I listened to, I can't comment as to whether the 3 was accurate.

i watched at our local pub. Missed the first half of the first period because ESPN+ did not connect (happens fairly often and have missed early parts of several games). From what I saw, we are vastly improved and different from last year. But we seem to pass up clear good shots far too often to pas and try to set up the perfect shot. just plain too unselfish. We have to put pucks on net and go for rebounds. Both of the Clarkson goals were like that. Shots taken that should not or did not go in but then got deflected or rebound recovered and put in. The game was back and forth on the ice so fast it was hard to follow at times and refs simply did not think they should call anything so special teams had little effect. Still believe that we could use a bit more size on defense - Clarkson is just a huge team (never thought I would see Sutter have to actually look up at a player). But I did not think we were totally out played as happened often last year. Fundamentals were not bad as we won our share of face offs, protected short handed, and our first power play look like we kept the puck in their zone and moved it well for almost the entire time. Hope for better luck tonight.

Neglected to post point spreads this week. Clarkson was a 0.5 goal favorite last night. Tonight RPI is a 0.5 goal favorite. For the football fans, we are a 7 point favorite over union at noon today. A bit important game since we need a win to avoid having a losing season.

I was at HFH last night. Excellent first period. Dominated the first couple minutes and it was back and forth most of the period. Moved the puck well in the offensive zone and got some good looks. Langenegger was strong. Second and third period, Clarkson kicked it into high gear and bottled them up in their own zone and forced a lot of turnovers in the defensive and neutral zones. On the PK in the second period, RPI failed to clear the zone even once in that 2-minute span. The SOG tell the story: 26-11 Clarkson over the second and third periods. Maybe a missed call or two by the officials but the team struggled to generate any real offense until the 6x5 in the final minute of the game. Overall Giesbrecht played very well - cannot fault him on either goal and kept them in it until the end.

Over the years I have noticed this trend : teams from out of town often struggle in the first period shaking off the bus ride. Then they look like an entirely different team in the 2nd and 3rd periods. This was the case last night. I agree the goaltending on both sides was great. The other thing I have noticed is teams that have good power plays move the puck around quickly. All game RPI gave Clarkson far too much time to get in the shooting lanes and that made their pp ineffective.

In the category of good news - RPI won back the SHOES today 24-7 playing an almost perfect game for them. Good job guys!!!!!!

Good news indeed.

I lost count of how many times Union got the ball into RPI territory, but the Engineers' defense held them off every time. Union's only score came on a 67-yard bomb.
