RPI 2023 Off-season: We March Fourth Into the Off-season

30 Years ago today the Capital District had a major snowstorm with 26 inches of snow and heavy winds. What does this have to do with RPI hockey? Well, they were supposed to play Colgate that night in an ECAC playoff series game #2. For the one time that I can remember, the game was postponed. The series ended up going three games (naturally) and game #3 ended up being played on a Monday night. FYI, the Engineers did win that series and had to play 4 days later in Lake Placid where they ran out of gas and was eliminated. For those who are not in the area now, they’re forecasting a big snowstorm tomorrow. Not gonna be 26 inches, but maybe half of that.

Jen and i were there for game one! Drove up to the Adirondacks that night and stayed at our home. We got over 103 inches in a two day span up there and were not able to get back to Troy for the next game. Our neighbor used his John Deere to truck the snow out of our driveway. We did attend the Monday game and drove home to NJ after . Much of NJ was also buried but down by the Jersey Shore we got just rain and not even a single flake.

If I remember correctly, Bendorf was an Appert recruit who wasn't kept by Smith. I wouldn't think that Smith would be interested now, but stranger things have happened.

If that is the case, why would Bendorf be interested? Sounds like a real intelligent move to me. Leave a coach who wanted you transferring to a coach who didn't want you? Really? The guy they should go after is Liam Gorman at Princeton.

I am sure that you are correct. Jericho was almost certainly kidding, but maybe he knows that Bendorf wants the Cross of Canton. ;-)

Bendorf is slower then molasses. He would have zero impact.

Perhaps - he was never very quick but his totals for his tenure at Mercyhurst shows the following Games -goals - assists-points. With our lack of offense, anyone who adds those numbers might help some at least. [TABLE="class: data, border: 0, cellpadding: 3, cellspacing: 0"]

Bendorf isn't good. I agree they should look at Gorman

I have seen Gorman in 2 games I think. He had a decent season this past year but not much to show before that. At this stage i would take anyone who adds some scoring to our goal challenged squad.

Maybe somebody else remembers this.

I have a hazy recollection that there was a time during Jim Salfi's tenure when there were back-to-back snowstorms on consecutive weekends.

The first weekend, RPI was scheduled to play a road game in Boston. I forget who the scheduled opponent was, but it shaped up as a tough matchup. The game was cancelled on account of the adverse travel conditions. RPI fans were not terribly disappointed.

The next weekend, RPI was scheduled to play a road game at Colgate, which looked to be an easy win, since Colgate was having a down year.

The coach managed to scrape together some sort of transportation (dogsleds, maybe?) and RPI made it to Hamilton for the game.

And lost to the Raiders.

If someone thinks I was trying to be sarcastic, I really wasn't. I was just trying to see if someone remembered something the way I did.

A check of the results of games RPI played at Colgate during Salfi's tenure indicates my memory must have been faulty. None of the games at Colgate followed a weekend in which RPI didn't play a game.

I think the sarcasm comment was referring to the earlier discussion of a Mercyhurst player.

Today is 15 March 2023. There are 206 days until RPI's next game.

This is based upon 7 October 2023 for the start of next season.

Wow. The sarcasm meter is off for everyone. Obvious sarcasm is obvious

I certainly thought that you were being sarcastic, but one can never be certain. Isn't that why emojis were invented?

And BTW, you did not respond to my sarcastic post on Handyman's birthday thread. ;-p

Link to Smitty's season wrap-up appearance on Wyland's radio show.

No breaking news really:

-He prefers a 3 game 1st round series
-Portal moves continues...end of season player sit downs are ongoing....did not mention names but said one other semi-unexpected player may exit Troy
-RPI is looking for defensemen, and others
-Transfer portal adjustment continues -- you're not only scouting Jr. kids., but also D1 kids who may be a fit
-He has been on the road recruiting

This thread is only fun when there are about 50% sarcastic postings. But obviously having a sense of humor about anything these days is just a bit more rare.

I think many were unaware of the player’s recruiting history with RPI. Nothing wrong with that, of course, but it’s the reason why the joke didn’t land, and not because this is a humorless bunch!

You have it spot on. This has become a far less humorous bunch. Could blame it on the pandemic or perhaps the long recent history of losing seasons. In any case, anhedonia is actually one of the classic 5 A's of schizophrenia.
