RPI 2023-24: In Our 200th Year, We're Getting It Right

So Dave's system gives up a lot of high quality chances and that's rather surprising because I would have thought that he would realize that we don't have the personnel to roll that way. He should have clogged the crap out the neutral zone, left wing lock, whatever to stop the high quality chances. He needs to teach and drill the team to defend the blue paint. Regarding Dave, I warned about this when the extension was signed but took a lot of grief about it on this thread. Apologies to me are probably in order but we're all family, so none needed.

Dave system is shit. I didn’t like the hire 7 years ago and I sure as hell don’t like it now.
yes the blue paint is left wide open for opposing teams. Last pp goal tonight is evidence of this.

Does anyone know why Dave and the team is no longer doing pre / post game interviews? No more Talkin-neers podcast. Nothing from RPITV on YouTube.... Not that it would be terribly exciting to listen to this year, but I do kinda miss it. Only the Roger Wyland radio show and that's in the middle of the day not not available to listen to online...

I think they do interviews, but they are not posted online. The athletic department might be shorthanded on the comms side after Kevin Beattie left. Some of the other stuff is student and alumni-driven, so people may have graduated and don't have the same level of free time. It's too bad that this way of communicating with the fans is not available this year, especially since the team has struggled badly in some games and I think it's important and useful to hear from players and coaches in those post-game interviews after that happens.

This weekend was frustrating...some signs of good things early against Harvard, but then things fell apart. I was out to dinner tonight and missed the Dartmouth game--the stat lines don't paint a pretty picture.

I wouldn't hold your breath. He just got extended last year, and on Rodger Wyland's radio show he said Dr. Bowers was consistently singing his praises. I'd be pretty surprised if they moved on. I think if they make a coaching move, it'll be with the women's program since that almost happened last year
Wtf?? Singing his praises? Oh boy we’re in trouble

C'mon dude, what's he going say. We're talking about Dave not Bryan. It took till the end of the summer for that extension, it was very close not to happening, that's public record not what you've been feed.

Tough game to watch tonight. You either get players to fit the system you want or get the system to fit the players you have. Not sure from the outside which is the failure but it has been a rough weekend. Still looking forward to seeing the team in person at the Mayor's Cup next weekend (it’s been forever since I've been to the Knick).
Yeah we have neither of those things lol

This weekend was frustrating...some signs of life in the second period against Harvard, but then a bad 3rd period. I was out to dinner tonight and missed the Dartmouth game--the stat lines don't paint a pretty picture.

This is a big reason why I miss Talkin' Neers (both when I was on it and after I graduated). It was always refreshing to hear perspective from Coach Smith or Coach Weber about the games, both win and lose. When the team didn't play well, there was responsibility taken for that and areas to work on highlighted. I'd imagine there would be the same thing now, but we have no interviews with actual substance except for when my blog did the mid-season sit down with Coach Smith.

The rodger wyland interviews almost never have anything of substance. He is too much of a cheerleader most of the time and just lobs softball questions. Rodger called last weekend's split of SLU and Clarkson "highly successful", and Coach Smith corrected him and said that he did not view it that way.

***?? Singing his praises? Oh boy we’re in trouble
a little odd for dave to say bowers was singing his praises? He needs to resign and do the right thing. He’s more than aware this isn’t working. Yes they’re probably not going to fire him that’s why I said he should resign. The Fieldhouse is empty for games the team is terrible. He goes on wyland for 10 minutes on Tuesday’s to talk out of both sides of his mouth. It’s ridiculous already

Rodger didn't have to say anything at all about Dr. Bowers, and he chose to bring her up. Anyways regarding the extension, you can believe what you would like, and I will believe what I would like. You can disagree with it happening, and I respect your opinion of that.

I'm not discussing my current opinions right now. I'm just trying to take a look at this from a logistics standpoint. I think the extension makes it very unlikely he's let go. And Coach Vines is relevant to this because I highly doubt our understaffed AD wants to conduct 2 separate coaching searches at the same time for our flagship programs. They are in-depth and lengthy processes

Rodger said that, not Dave. Rodger was talking about when he had Dr. Bowers on his show

Vines isn’t going anywhere. Sachi is too valuable to RPI. It’s bizarre for Dave to say bowers has been singing his praises. It comes off as disingenuous and arrogant.

I don't think anything is going to happen until the end of the season, forced or voluntary.

The thing that is frustrating is the regression from last year; the team had some key returnees and some of the new players look like they can offer something. It is fair to expect some improvement, especially given the level of the rest of the conference. I think injuries are playing a bit of a role here (another reason why the loss of communication outlets from the team is not good), but even considering that the team should not be minus 30 in shots against Dartmouth.

Appreciate your conciliatory tone. It's not hard, you hire Kirk who all the hockey alumni want and some of the fans like me think would be good. Regarding Rodger, of course he's going pump Dave's tires, he's a regular guest. I agree with your assessment that Rodger is cheerleading.

You are spot on about the weakness of the conference. Hope you are well.

Yeah honestly it's super frustrating to listen to every week. Dave is more than capable of answering hard questions. I think he has always done a great job talking to the media.

I think Kirk would be good, but my ONLY question with him is that he only has one year of college hockey experience. That is a slight concern, but I think his experience in Dubuque helps. Personally, I think Joe Dumais would be my top candidate if there were a coaching search. Natty with Quinnipiac and has helped turn them into what they are now. I don't think you should automatically elevate an alum to the top just because they're an alum even though I do like Kirk.

Good for you, the team you allegedly root for is struggling and you can collect your trophies. I’d rather go down with the ship rooting for my team than be right.

Dumais would be a good choice. I think Kirk name surfaces not just because he's an alum but as you rightly said his time with the Fighting Saints can give him in roads on talent. He clearly knows the game.
