RPI 2023-24: In Our 200th Year, We're Getting It Right

Bump back to page one... St. Lawrence is coming off of a 5-1 loss to Canisius and a 1-1 tie vs. a good RIT team last weekend. RPI shouldn't need any motivation against the Larries tonight following the bed wetting that occurred in Canton earlier in the year. They are not shy about throwing the body around and are fond of "agitating" shall we say.....ha ha. I expect a physical game tonight. Offensively, Gavars leads them --he is very good at both ends. He played for Latvia in the WJCs.

I was in Niagara Falls yesterday on a business trip caught the Niagara/RIT game at Dwyer arena. RIT is good really don’t belong in Atlantic hockey. Side note Dwyer arena is basically a high school rink. It’s pretty bad

Any updates on our walking (?) wounded and infirm? We could really use Tinling and Lee, although Jake’s absence did seem to coincide with a reduced number of trips to the box for the good guys.

I thought Felix Caron would have made the list? A little surprising

Idk how much stock to put into the list honestly. Easton Hewson is on the list, but Easton Adrian isn't. Connor MacPherson is on the list but Felix Caron isn't.

I know which players I would rather have

It looks like the team was firing on all cylinders in the third period, 3 goals and Watson stopped 12 shots. Great job finishing it out!

The team played a great game. A few stupid penalties. Hotson should have scored a few times he was unlucky last night. Watson is playing really well. Looks like freshman Watson.

Nice win tonight, the Muzzatti line was great. A win tomorrow would go a long way!! As usual, crickets on here after a win….

Despite the score, there was/is still an awful lot of work to do with this team. All last night showed was the potential that has yet to be tapped into. Still incredibly inconsistent individual performance from period to period and even from shift to shift. Special teams are sub par with systems that don’t fit the players. Remind me of repeating things and the definition of insanity? I’m rooting for the men in red, but I don’t see fundamental, team-wide improvement. What I do see are breakdowns that our opponents have failed to capitalize on. Squeeking out wins to this point. It is still an undisciplined overall product on the ice.

On the flip side there are definitely some individual players who are performing better now than earlier in the year. And, let’s give credit to the guys for fighting through some injuries and bouts of sickness. And the team flashes moments of speed and skill Dave and his staff are looking to add and build from. And, maybe most importantly, the entire team, coaches and players, has/have strung together enough wins to hopefully relax enough mentally to coach and play with confidence that carries over to harder opponents.

A win tonight would be a big step forward.

Yes, there definitely were errors that better teams would capitalize on. As examples, twice in the third period we had defenders under pressure put the puck in front of our own goal with opposing forwards in a position to potentially cash in. Those can't happen tonight, much less against Q and Cornell in upcoming games. However, I did see a team that's gaining confidence and picking up the tempo instead of being incredibly tentative as they were during the early season gauntlet. I think that starts from the net out. Watson, much like Savory in spring 2020, is the key to this team and since returning to the lineup he's delivering.

How’s this for a best case scenario:
If every ECAC road team (except RPI) wins tonight with no OT games, RPI would go from 11th place to a tie for 2nd in a two-week period. I’d be willing to bet that this has never happened before this late in the season…

I thought the overall performance was much better and encouraging. RPI's forecheck was consistent, effective, and led to some great scoring opportunities and even created a goal out of nothing. And RPI was surprisingly dangerous on offensive zone faceoffs--in addition to the Regula goal that got the team going, there were a number of quality shots created off of face-offs. And I thought the performance was a good 60 minute effort.

The special teams play still needs work, and a minus 1 on the night, but in fairness the SLU power play goal was an absolute snipe. And while the shorty was bad, the team showed some character to get the goal back on the same power play.

I think there are still some fundamental issues in transition when RPI loses the puck--some poor turnovers, but the lack of positional recovery is the bigger issue. Take the SLU short handed goal. There is no reason for that to be a 2 on 1 break from an offensive zone faceoff--a little too much puck watching and not anticipating danger, which is a recurring theme of RPI defending. SLU was allowed to create too many good chances in garden variety transitional situations that should be easily defended.

A step forward, but there will be tougher tests. A lot of incentive to get to .500 in the league tonight. I won't be able to watch the game, unfortunately. LGR!

I think this is really well put

Largely because there is a clear #1 (Q) and #12 (Harvard) and it looks like the ten teams in between are virtually indistinguishable.
