RPI 2022 Off-season: Surely, We Deserve Better

And for all intents and purposes, coverage of away hockey games on WRPI radio is probably cooked.

WRPI sports broadcasters are now limited to non athletic department staff, middle aged alumni and a not all that far away from senior citizen status volunteer. As you may recall, one other alumni quit awhile ago in protest over an organizational CEO he found objectionable (as did most other people).

Unfortunately, none of the still active ones are yet retirees who can take off at will to broadcast away hockey games.

Kind of sad since RPI hockey has been a staple on WRPI for over a half century ever since RPI hockey left the commercial air waves circa 1970. All the sports that is possibly left now on WRPI air is four to six Saturday afternoon football games a year.

Well, in the words of the late Meatloaf, two out of three ain’t bad :-D

we’re working on it. I “trained” two students last year who are eager to get started this year, with maybe a third.

In honor of Maddy Peterson, today is 23 August 2022. There are 39 days until RPI's next game.

This is based upon 1 October 2022 for the start of next season.

Still need the men's roster.

Is 2 1/3 students enough? Seriously, I hope that works out, and would that include away games?

In addition to challenges recruiting students, are there funding obstacles associated with covering the away games? I am assuming that the broadcasters wouldn't travel with the team.

Not so much of an issue with funding, it’s more along the lines of time away from our families, work commitments, etc. You are correct that broadcasters do not travel with team.

I was referring mainly to financial obstacles relating to travel for the student broadcasters--gas money or car rental, hotels, insurance coverage in case there is an accident on the way to a game. Totally understand the time commitment issues for alumni who have other jobs and family obligations.

August 22 has come and gone, so I took a look at RPI's visitors' policy.

What it says is that all visitors on campus for a full day or longer are required to prove that they are fully vaccinated or have had a negative COVID-19 test in the previous 48 hours, while short-term visitors (i.e., UPS drivers, delivery persons, etc.) are not required to provide proof of vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test. If evidence of vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test is not provided, the visitor must wear a high-quality N-95 mask during their short visit to campus.

I assume people coming to campus to view an athletic event are included in the "etc." category of short-term visitors. Wonder if the Tute is going to hand out free N-95 masks to fans who arrive without one.

Incidentally, I note that RPI's athletic website lists the starting time of the opening football game against Dickinson as 12 noon, while Dickinson's site lists the starting time as 1 PM. Hope both teams (to say nothing of the officials) eventually manage to figure out when the game is supposed to begin.

Given that we just lost our SI officer for hockey info flow may get even slower. I was going to recommend you for the job, but I don't know if the NCAA would approve of an Athletic Department employee with the hobby of tracking recruits for a public forum in off hours. We definitely appreciate it though.

I was as stumped as you are trying to figure out which category people who just want to enjoy a stinking game fit in to. The three or so hours that entails is neither a full day or longer visitor nor is it the 10, 15 or even 20 minutes that delivery people are around for.

So yesterday I emailed the top athletic guy directly for some clarity and as of the close of business today have not received a reply. While I have never emailed this guy myself previously, I understand this is pretty much SOP for this guy. Replies for even very routine questions requiring very little more than basic information take awhile, contain few specifics and almost always "thank you for your concern". Seriously doubt that would be the case if the individual who should be holding this position now and should have been holding it for much of this century were, in fact, holding it.

The first two paragraphs read as follows.

Could you clearly and concisely state any and all policies, procedures and protocols attendees at any of your athletic events are to be subjected to in order to attend. None of the literature sent out soliciting money for your events even makes reference to anything that may be expected or required.

There is absolutely no doubt, confusion or ambiguity on any of these points at any other relevant venues that I am familiar with and/or attend ranging from my small private high school to major arenas and venues drawing tens of thousands both indoors and outdoors. At all of them you know what you are paying for prior to purchase. Without exception they all proved to be pay, show up with ticket, enter and be left alone to enjoy the event and it has been so for well over a year now.

Yes, the rest of the communication was hardly friendly or cordial. Possibly, that may be why it was ignored. It pretty much made it clear I wish to remain supportive of the coaches, athletes, programs and the vast majority of athletic department staff while at the same loathing and disdaining the institutional people they work for. I will take a wild guess that most of those positions are still held by Shirley bots who still feel and act empowered enough to create the same chaos anonymously and from the safety of the bushes. Even the most positive change imaginable at the top spot will take more than two months to root out these individuals and get them out of here.

As for Dickinson people, they have far more to concern themselves with than a one hour time difference in game time. They still do not have the entry requirements any more than we do. Shameful if they first find out what they are after driving for hours and had no chance to meet them.
