RPI 2022 Off-season: Surely, We Deserve Better

Today is 30 August 2022. There are 32 days until RPI's next game.

This is based upon 1 October 2022 for the start of next season.

Understand that men's hockey will be on ESPN+ this upcoming year. Any information on what broadcasting we can expect from RPI-TV and WRPI streaming for the upcoming year? Football? Women's hockey?

Apparently over the last year
Sertti grew an inch and gained 10 pounds
Walsh shrunk an inch and gained 10 pounds
Nykanen gained 15 pounds
Beaton grew an inch
Lee gained 5 pounds
Schreifels grew an inch
Mahshie gained 5 pounds
Gagnon gained 5 pounds
Miller gained 5 pounds

I also didn't think they allowed players to pick numbers as high as Brown's 51 but it's cool to see something unique there

Brad Tapper wore number 52 and chose it because he played one year in Troy with his brother Bryan who wore number 25. I cannot recall any others with higher numbers.

I hope those are all pounds of muscle. Nykanen intrigues me. He jumped directly from some pretty good prep competition to college as a true freshman. Twenty years ago or more that was normal, but now 95%+ go for at least a year of junior hockey. That tells me two things: (1) he's probably a walk-on (non-scholarship or, at best, a small fractional one); and (2) he could be a late bloomer. Combine that with a shutdown during his freshman year and we've probably not seen his true potential. It's too bad we also haven't had a JV squad in about 30 years because that might have been the perfect setting for him to develop last year. Now, as an academic junior, we see him jump up to 200 lbs on his 6'3" frame and I can at least dream of a power forward. Hopefully he'll get some ice time in the scrimmage/exhibition/Atlantic Hockey portion of the schedule so we can see if he's got the potential to contribute. Go to the net young man.

BTW, Does anyone know if the scrimmage is open to the public? As I've stated before, in MBB scrimmages must be behind closed doors without a score or official stats being announced (although they generally leak out). Depending on the agreed upon conditions, coaches can even stop play and make adjustments as if it was a practice. Several of the Ivies played two hockey exhibitions last year or this year so that appears to be the new normal. Since we have 3 I guess one had to be classified as a scrimmage. I just don't know what that means in hockey terms since I don't remember a non-intra-team (i.e. non-Red/White) scrimmage.

P.S. Small players often seem to be listed with exaggerated heights, especially before they produce. Walsh put up a pretty good season last year so we can now list him closer to his actual size. If he puts up 30 points this season he'll probably shrink again. He's one I'd like to see return for his COVID year.

Are you saying that Finn Brown and Altti Nykanen are brothers? That would explain Brown's given name. :-D

I've seen several of these guys in street clothes around town lately.... i can tell you that several of them are BIG boys and they didn't have skates or pads on !

Just wanted to let everyone know that I just got back from the HFH Box Office to turn in my ticket application and found out that the scrimmage against Colgate on 10/1 is part of the season ticket package and will be open to the public. No closed door session…. Also, season tickets should be mailed out by mid to late September.

Wicked, you know my feeling about size for hockey players. I love the biggest defense we can put out there and a few big power forwards mixed with some speedy little rabbits. Obviously talent is the big determinate for success but it never hurts to be a bigger team. This is a year of the great unknown and it is difficult to even have a feel for how this team might do. They will go as far as the defense and goaltending permits. Not at all sure about how much offense and scoring we can muster but we may well be very surprised.
