RPI 2022 Off-season: Surely, We Deserve Better

Wicked, you know my feeling about size for hockey players. I love the biggest defense we can put out there and a few big power forwards mixed with some speedy little rabbits. Obviously talent is the big determinate for success but it never hurts to be a bigger team. This is a year of the great unknown and it is difficult to even have a feel for how this team might do. They will go as far as the defense and goaltending permits. Not at all sure about how much offense and scoring we can muster but we may well be very surprised.

Totally agree Doc. I have no idea if we'll score many goals, but I doubt we'll get manhandled by many/any teams !

Our average size this season is 6'0.4" and 189.6 LBs.
This is a little smaller than 6'0.6" and 190.5 LBs from last season which makes sense since we tried to add more speed and skill. Still pretty good size on the team in general

It was pointed out in a tweet that Nick Strom is on this year's WMU roster. https://wmubroncos.com/sports/mens-ice-hockey/roster

I doubt it's an issue. The WMU roster page is obviously still being updated so he probably fell through the cracks. His Twitter profile says RPI and he was obviously in Troy for pre-season photos.

BTW, Aslanidis profile now says AIC. It looks like all of AIC's goalies that played last season are gone, incuding Calvaruso, so I wonder if he just decided the path to playing time was better in Springfield than competing with a sophomore incumbent like Watson coming of a very strong freshman season. That's fine, because I think Coach Smith found a very promising alternative in Cherepak.

Sez- I would imagine those numbers will keep us in the top 5 or at least the top 10 in both categories. Clarkson and Western Michigan have almost always seemed to be two of the biggest teams and usually enjoy considerable success. Of course duly noted that talent and speed have to be considered but there seems to be no doubt at this level that you normally need some real size to be competitive.

Just wanted to let everyone know that I just got back from the HFH Box Office to turn in my ticket application and found out that the scrimmage against Colgate on 10/1 is part of the season ticket package and will be open to the public. No closed door session…. Also, season tickets should be mailed out by mid to late September.

Thanks for the info

For the football fans - today's opener against Dickinson will begin at noon. Various locations on the RPIathletics website list the starting time as either noon or 1 PM, but according to Coach Isernia, it will start at noon.

Dickinson was a fairly unremarkable 4-6 last year, but it should be noted that there are some very good teams in the Centennial Conference where they play, including Johns Hopkins, who won two games in the DIII tournament last year, and Muhlenberg, who won three.

They will be starting a quarterback named Presley Egbers, who transferred from Randolph-Macon. Egbers played in all ten games for Randolph-Macon last year and had a 66% completion rate as the Yellowjackets went 9-1. He could present a pretty good test for the Engineers' defense this afternoon.

According to most betting sources we are about a one point underdog today and expect a low scoring game.

IMHO, a boring game, but we won. I missed the first few minutes. Is the announcer with Kurt new?

Agree with your opinion. Boring but at least the RPI defense played well enough. The offense will need considerable work if they are to be on top of the Liberty League standings. The first few minutes were the problem as Dickinson scored on a long pass that was tipped into the receiver's hands and then RPI was stopped on a drive deep in the zone when a pass was missed by us and fell into a defensive player's hands. Other than that it was mostly punting and missed opportunities. But we held on for the win and move on to next weekend. Very fortunate that the Dickinson starting quarterback left with a knee injury as he started the game well and was giving us some real trouble both with is passing and evasive running.

The announcer with Kurt was Yancey Roy. He has worked on RPI basketball videocasts in the past, though this is the first time I've heard him do football.

I agree with Dr. D's analysis. It was reminiscent of RPI's first two games last year. The offense was ineffective for most of the game, but the defense did enough to win. They squeaked past Montclair, they squeaked past Stevenson, and three months later we looked up and they were 11-1.

After looking at the other scores from today, last year will be most difficult to repeat. Union, Hobart and Ithaca looked very impressive. Hope we can develop a more efficient passing game or all 3 of those teams will present great problems. Whether it is a short passing game or some deep threats, the completion percentage today simply will not be even close to good enough. We might need to be very much a team of cardiac kids like last year winning games in the last seconds by the closest of margins.

Sez: Appreciate your exhaustive review. Virtually agree with everything you posted. A short time ago I had looked at the schedule and my first half prediction is not much different but somehow i came up with our totals as 9-8 overall and 4-4 in the ECAC. I believe I felt we could sweep Union as the only difference from your numbers. I am interested in what Jenny thinks since she almost always places well ahead of me in the pick the standings contests but she says with all the new faces (and with so many no longer here) it is just too early for her. I also think that we are a bit on the low end for our predictions as we might be giving too much credit to a few other teams. There have been so many changes that they too may need a period of adjustment to be playing more organized hockey.
In any case - your posting is extremely well thought out.

Thanks for the positivity! I might be on the low end in terms of how I picked for the first half, but I think I make up for it with too much optimism for the second half. In general, I think we're all in agreement in general for predictions for the team.
