RPI 2013 Part V: Who Wants Screech?

Re: RPI 2013 Part V: Who Wants Screech?

One in five chance....to meet a number 1 seed. I'm of two minds here, part of me wants the team to miss the tournament this year so that the sting of our exit really hurts and provides extra motivation for next year. Naturally part of me wants to see us score at least one more goal this year.
I would love to see us get in as johnk just wrote. As a low seed, I wouldn't expect us to win, although anything is possible (see Kepler's 3rd Law). If we do score a goal and break the 3.5 game shutout streak, it would be a large step for the program.

All this talk about as a low seed we won't win. I don't get it. The #1 seed is Q and we played them straight up both times. If we aren't afraid of #1, why should #2, 3 or even 4 bother us? I'm not sure there is a powerhouse team in the NCAA this year that we really need to fear. That said... if we play Miami getting that goal is still going to be tough!

Could not agree more. We have a very different team make up this year than we have had in the recent past including when we did get into the tournament a couple years back. That year, we matched up well with a lot of teams but some were just monsters for us. NDak was one of them. This year, if we somehow were able to get any bid, we would be a team to be feared as a possible upset winner.

Re: RPI 2013 Part V: Who Wants Screech?

Extra motivation doesn't lead to execution. It would be great to get in, especially for the seniors. Their chances this year are somewhat better than they were in 2011. Hopefully a couple of games fall the right way and off to a regional they go.

When I was looking at some WaP archives, that our chances of making the tournament at this point were better than 20%. Looking at http://www.withoutapeer.com/2011/03/hacking-pairwise.html , we were effectively flipped, and had a 4 out of 5 shot in making the tournament. In both cases, though, it is still better than 0%.

I didn't say that we won't win -- I said that I wouldn't expect us to win. :) We can indeed beat anyone -- and we can lose to anyone. I. e., as Kepler's Third Law states, don't bet for or against RPI under any circumstances.

Re: RPI 2013 Part V: Who Wants Screech?

Really? Any team can win tourney is year..... I want another game. I want bailen to have a chance to play in his last game. I want kasdorf tomgetmw chance to redeem himself. Any regional in ready to fly or drive

This. I want this team to have at least one more game.

Thanks for digging that up. That was what I recalled also, the odds were much better two years ago. 80% vs. 20%.

Kepler's laws are dumb.

Kepler's laws are dumb.

There was a time when they held up pretty well for both Clarkson and Cornell. But I think your assessment of their importance now is correct. However, saying that, i would never bet for or against us. We seem to continue the trend we have had for the past 50 years of playing to the level of the competition.

Well then meeting a #1 seed in the tournament should be right up our alley, and I'm not talking bowling either! :)

In 2011, I thought we were playing extremely well until Rabbani blew up that freshman defensemen with that monster hit (perfectly clean and legal). it was like poking a grizzly bear with a pointed stick, just enough to anger him and not enough to hurt him. The Sue just dialed it up a notch after that. This year, we have quality on all four lines, we can stay in the game on every shift. I think we'd fare much better this time than in 2011.

A hot goalie and a team that never quits can go pretty far. assuming we can get there to begin with.

We were not by any means a great team that year. We were very much one dimensional. But I had felt the worst possible draw for us was NDak. They had something like 16 NHL draft choices on a squad that just had strength and poise on every line and every defensive pairing. I thought we had a chance against many of the other teams-but no prayer with them. The surprising thing was we were outplaying and outshooting them for a considerable time-and then as you said-the sleeping giant awoke and it was all over. This year when we are totally healthy-we have the depth to play well against anyone. If by some stroke of luck we do get into the tournament as a 16 seed-any team that has to face us has something to be concerned about. However, it just does not look good for things to fall into place for us this year.

Wow my memory must be shot. I thought I remembered Seth and the group thinking they were done after the Colgate loss, then having the team start to practice after finding out there was a shot. Oh well, I stand corrected.

From what I remember, SA said after the Colgate loss that going to the tournament was a longshot. This past weekend, at the end of the RPIAthletics clip, he clearly uses the word "no". It certainly is tough to wait it out. I'm sure we'll all be watching tomorrow's games intently.

GO MAVS!

I think that was their original assessment until they understood that we were in a position that most results would benefit us.

Re: RPI 2013 Part V: Who Wants Screech?

Today is 21 March 2013. There are either 8, 9, or 198 days until RPI's next game. ;)

This is based upon the round of 16 of the NCAA tournament being on 29 and 30 March 2013 and 5 October 2013 being the start of next season.
