So long as Carey and Haggarty both play less than 30 minutes per game, which is pretty much a given for forward, then the amount of ice time one gets does not impact the amount of time the other can get - even if matching lines dictates the two are never out there at the same time.In order to do this exercise, you would need a team that actually matches a checking line on Carey. Then you would need to compute the amount of time during the course of the game, the top line of the team matching Carey gets on the ice. I bet you the checking line during the course of that 60 minutes (depending on constraints - game situations) will play more than their top line, which is my point. Obviously, Carey's current line is better defensively than Haggerty's based on the stats.
