RPI 2013/14 Part III: Maximum Overdrivel

Re: RPI 2013/14 Part III: Maximum Overdrivel

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but, when dealing with financial aid schools, you CANNOT give extra money to incoming athletes. It is a violation of NCAA rules to treat athletes differently than the rest of the student body, let alone give them "extra money". That is all I am saying on this. Are all your wires connected??

Have you ever seen the movie "Blue Chips"?

Maybe just a product of my frustration after this disaster of a playoff weekend, but, where rules exist, it is possible to get around or break them. Maybe Union and a lot of the other schools follow the rules; I don't know, don't care, frankly, and I always in the past have questioned whether or not there was a real, tangible influence based on the ability to give out athletic scholarships or not anyway.

Re: RPI 2013/14 Part III: Maximum Overdrivel

Do you really believe they give them no incentive money to go to Union, even if it's not called an "athletic scholarship"?

This makes no sense because the only thing holding Union to their scholarship ban is Union; if they wanted to circumvent it they'd just change their own rule.

There are ways of giving athletes academic or need based aid that can, in some cases, be abused -- that's the traditional method by which these rules are bent -- but again with Union that's overthinking it. They control their processes.

If the suggestion is SEC under-table payments, you have a great imagination. The stakes are zero -- no AD office gnome or used car owner alum would risk so much as a parking ticket. I don't even think BC or Maine would do that. (No promises with Minny or Michigan...)

This is the style I was getting at; but as I understood it I thought it was the NCAA banning them from athletic scholarships (I thought some rule some year went into place that all new D-I varsity programs were not allowed to give them), but if it is Union themselves stopping athletic scholarships, then my apologies for making assumptions that were inaccurate, and thanks for correcting me, life is all about learning :P

I thought that at one point D-3 banned D-3 schools who were playing up to D-1 in a sport from adding scholarships - the existing ones were grandfathered, but no more could be added. At the time Union didn't give athletic scholarships, so I don't think they can just add them now if they chose to.

Or am I mis-remembering and it's that no more schools can move a sport up to D-1 at all any more? Anyway, there was some sort of restriction and some sort of grandfathering. Good story, eh?

Without a Peer did a piece on this about 15 months ago. It is from an RPI perspective, but still has details about what was happening in general.

Ah ha! "Thus, going forward, RPI, St. Lawrence, Clarkson, and Colorado College continue to offer athletic scholarships. This is also why Union and RIT are unable to do so, Union didn't offer them at the time and RIT didn't move to Division I in hockey until 2005."

I still appear to have a couple brain cells left - obviously need more beer!

If the argument is union is gaming the system better than rpi is playing it, the solution is the same.

Everyone will just be happy with another homemfirstnround exit. Nothing will change .

Speak for yourself. This was the last straw for me. My standard for this team this season was to at least make it to the ECAC final four. Now that I've suffered another disappointment of a season with more dump-n-chase, five-forward power play units, and left-wing-pinches, I want a coaching change.

I will not argue with you, the coach has to take responsibility for his system. However, I saw Neal (one of my favorite players) miss three attempts at open nets. And two more excellent scoring chances.
We had many chances to blow this game wide open, and we missed them. That is not on the coaches. We panic in the defensive zone and consistently fail to clear the puck under pressure.
This should not be happening in the last game of the season. These guys have had enough experience to deal with this.
This years failure goes to the team and the coaches. They both came up short.
I would say that we should get rid of the coaches, but I have seen RPI play under three different head coaches and nothing has changed on the ice. They consistently under achieve.
All that said, I can't wait for next season. I do love the cherry and white.

Re: RPI 2013/14 Part III: Maximum Overdrivel

Believe it or not, it would be really easy to give extra money to incoming athletes in the form of a scholarship that isn't explicitly called "HOCKEY ATHLETIC SCHOLARSHIP". I never said I have hard proof of this, but it is entirely possible and I'm betting it happens in a lot of places.

Yes. Typically it is called a "job." You get paid for cleaning the party room or something like that. No way overtly to link one to the other, it is just coincidence.

Ralph, I and everyone else on this board really appreciate all you do and your enthusiasm for RPI Hockey, but this is just too soon after last night. I will not participate in this thread for at least a week. I hope that all the passionate RPI fans will do the same. Reflect, gather thoughts and make reasoned posts. This program has some real issues it must deal with and the off-season is once again going to be very long.

Actually I am losing a lot of enthusiasm also. :(
