RPI 2011-12 season

Re: RPI 2011-12 season

Wisconsin was definitely not on top of their game last night and RPI definitely took full advantage of it, playing very well and making a game of it. That was the kind of game you walk away from and even though you lost, you felt like you watched a fun game and it almost felt like a win in that perspective. Certainly the most exciting game I've been to at HFH all year. Went there hoping to see RPI score a goal and saw them go toe to toe with the best in the nation instead. When RPI had that late power play there was definitely a feeling of "wow, they could tie this up again." Had no expectation of that coming in.

That said, I think we're in for a beating this afternoon - we were gassed in the third, Wisconsin had plenty left in the tank. Mark Johnson is a master chess player and he'll make the adjustments necessary to make today rough for RPI, not to mention that the conditioning usually plays a bigger role on Saturday.

I have to agree today could be tough, with the element of surprise gone and perhaps some bruised egos from only winning by 1 and having to come bacK in the third to do it. I would expect to see Wisconsin at full throttle all game long. What was a nothing game to them last night has turned into a game where they need to prove last night was a fluke.

Re: RPI 2011-12 season

Hard to explain the 4-3 loss to Syracuse tonight. The Engineers played okay, and appeared to be the better team, especially early on, but Syracuse deserves credit for getting the most of every opportunity. Positives for RPI were a PP that always looked liked they knew what they were doing, and another strong effort on every shift from Jordan Smelker. But a few defensive lapses... that is all it takes to lose a game they should have won.

Re: RPI 2011-12 season

RPI and Syracuse scoreless after one period, shots tied 5-5. Very slow start for the Engineers who couldn't get out of their own way in the first 5-10 minutes but they picked up play considerably as the period went on.

Re: RPI 2011-12 season

RPI now leading Syracuse 2-0 in the second, on goals by Smelker and Harrison.

Smelker's goal was a picture perfect 3-on-1 which became a 2-on-1, with a feed from Cox and a lot of patience by Smelker before putting a laser right past the Cuse goalie. Harrison's goal was a greasy one on about a third rebound attempt, but they count just as much as the pretty ones. :D

Congrats to the Womens team for the first home win of the season.

Re: RPI 2011-12 season

Can RPI make the Playoffs?

It appears at the break that the ECAC is split in Two with there being a clear top 6 teams and then the second group which includes RPI.

Cornell, Harvard, Dartmouth, Clarkson, Q Pac and SLU would be in my top.

Princeton, Colgate, Brown, Union, RPI and Yale would be the next teir.

Realistically the 7th and 8th playoff spots should depend upon your record vs these teams (Max 20 points available) and anything against the top 6 teams I would consider bonous points.

Princeton is currently 5-0-1 wins vs Brown (twice), Yale (twice) and Union and a Tie with RPI. No bonous points

RPI is Currently 1-0-2 vs these teams with a win vs Yale and ties with Brown and Princeton. no bonous points

Brown 1-2-2 vs these teams win vs Union, ties with RPI and Colgate and 1 bonous point for the tie with Q Pac

Union 0-3-0 vs these teams with loses to Yale,Brown and Princeton but have 3 bonous points with their win over Clarkson and Tie with SLU

Yale is 1-4-0 vs these teams with a win over Union and loses to Colgate, RPI, and Princeton twice. no bonous points

Colgate 2-0-1 vs these teams with wins over Yale and Princeton and a tie vs Brown.

So at this point in the season I would say the order is

7th Colgate 5 out of a possible 6 points with a win over Princeton
8th Princeton 11 out of 12 points
9th RPI 4 out of 6 points
10th Brown 4 out of 10 points 1 bonous point
11th Yale 2 out of 10 points with win over Union
12th Union 0 out of 6 points 3 bonous points

Re: RPI 2011-12 season

Seeing how we are in the NLI period I understand that so far we have 2 D, 2F and a goalie committed for next season. Has anyone heard anything else?

I have heard that we have 6 commitments for next year, and would like to get one more, but I have only seen reference to four of them so far: Banks, Gruschow, Godin and Wash. Does anyone know who the other two are? I believe that Statsman mentioned that one was a goalie. The team has been playing with only three lines most of this year due to injuries, so it will be good to have a little bit larger roster next year (losing only 5 to graduation).

There was an newspaper article linked at the RPI website some time ago stating that Kristen Jakubowski was applying for a redshirt, which I am sure that she will get, and would be back next season. Does anyone know about the status of the other injured players?

Re: RPI 2011-12 season

Good for Jakubowski. Concussions are serious business so it's probably best for her to focus on the '12-'13 season. I thought she improved tremendously last year and look forward to seeing how she does with an extra year of eligibility. I also hope Daniels returns as that would give the team 4 experienced players on the back line plus Walsh, who got some time back there during the game at Yale. Coach Burke did a nice job bringing in 3 solid freshman on the blue line 4 years ago but having to play that many inexperienced defenders is a scary proposition.

I see Coach Youlen on the recruiting trail a lot, and know she's responsible for sealing some deals too;)

Interesting analysis. Princeton is more likely to fall with the mid-pack SLU team battling it out for spots 6 and 7. The Tigers are IMHO better than the rest of this pack. That leaves five teams to battle for one playoff spot. If you throw the Princeton results out of your match-up results within pack equation you get a different look.

Re: RPI 2011-12 season

I hadn't checked the RPI directory all year, but three of the four recruits who have been menioned are listed.

Name: Brandi Leigh Banks
Class: First-Year Student
Curriculum: Biomedical Engineering

Name: Lauren J. Wash

That leaves five teams to battle for one playoff spot. If you throw the Princeton results out of your match-up results within pack equation you get a different look.

It is now clear that we need to throw Princeton out of the equation, and focus on the teams occupying spots 8 to 12 and redo the numbers:

8th Brown HTH 3W-3T-0L 9/12 points plus 1 other point for 10. Games left vs Yale and Colgate
9th RPI HTH 3W-1T-1L 7/10 points plus 1 other point for 8. Games left vs Union (2) and Colgate
10th Colgate HTH 2W-1T-1L 5/8 points plus 2 other points for 7. Games lefts vs Union, RPI, Brown and Yale
11th Union HTH 1W-1T-3L 3/10 points plus 3 other points for 6. Games left with RPI(2) and Colgate
12th Yale HTH 1W-0T-5L 2/12 points plus 0 other points for 2. Games left with Colgate and Brown

Brown, RPI and Colgate all have their destiny in their own hands. Colgate has the easiest schedule left. Any of the teams that manages to sweep their remaining head to head games within this group is likely to grab that last spot, unless teams start stealing multiple points in other games. My guess is 16 points will be sufficient to earn the right to face the Big Red in the playoffs.

Re: RPI 2011-12 season

Brown, RPI and Colgate all have their destiny in their own hands.
Unfortunately, RPI doesn't really control their own destiny. If they win their three "winnable" games and Brown also wins their games against Colgate and Yale, they'll both end up tied at 16 and Brown wins the tiebreaker because they won the season series.

RPI would have to steal another point from somewhere (the games against Qpac and Princeton to end the season seem like a decent shot, but they're both away games) or hope that Brown drops a couple somewhere along the way.

This is just a short rip-off of this thread from last season (and, yes, I will be putting up a new version of that thread starting next week). Now, one of the big caveats is that there is much less parity in the women's ECAC than the men's. I mean, the probability of Yale ending up with 20 points is very nearly null (5 E-16 % based on current women's KRACH ratings). On the flip side, Cornell has a 2.3 E-10 % chance of finishing the season with 26 points.

But, something that it does show is that as long as you can get 11 points, you're eligible for the 8th playoff spot. And, if you can get to 19 and have the right tiebreakers, you've got a shot at the 4th home-ice spot. Yes, it does mean that a lot of other things have to happen as well, because those are the limits and the reasonable numbers are going to be much more, well, reasonable.

Some prize . RPI had the honour last year...scared Cornell in the first game, but didn't have enough to take a 3 game series. However, making the playoffs is a worthwhile goal for all of these teams. Go Engineers!

Yale can no longer finish anywhere higher than 6th due to their loss to Brown yesterday.

That means that Harvard (with 19 points) cannot be caught by Yale.

SLU, Clarkson, and Dartmouth can all still finish in the basement if the exact wrong scenario happens.

In order to play at home the last weekend of February, you need to be able to get to 20 points.

To make sure you're playing at all in the last weekend of February you only need to be able to get to 12 points (so, Brown could potentially lose out but still finish 8th, if the right combination of losses occurs for the four teams behind the Bears).

Re: RPI 2011-12 season

With 6 games to go and a tie with Brown in the standings, RPI and Brown both have the following opponents in common,
Cornell, Colgate, Dartmouth and Havard. Brown also plays Clarkson and SLU while RPI has Princeton and Qpac.

RPI has to get one more point than Brown over these next 6 games in order to secure the last playoff spot.

Brown is 0-5-1 vs their remaining opponents this year with a 1-1 tie vs Colgate and has 4 gf and 25 GA (1en).

RPI is 1-4-1 vs their remaining opponents and has 10 GF with 16 GA (2(en)).

RPI and Brown each have 2 home games left. Brown vs Colgate and Cornell and RPI vs Harvard and Dartmouth.

I would have to say that 8th spot is still a real possibility.
