RPI 2011-12 season

Re: RPI 2011-12 season

Actually I do know her name but I'm always reluctant to disclose until I see some evidence that the player herself is ready to announce (so once I have heard about the commitment I monitor her team's website and other sources for an announcment). I have just heard of a third commitment, another defenceman, this time from a U.S. prep school, and am checking to see if the name has been disclosed somewhere else. I think they are looking for 7 players for 2012-13, so its great to see that they are off to a fast start.

Still nothing on line about the names that you heard?

Re: RPI 2011-12 season

hab,

I assume that she is neither of the two whom you heard about.

Correct...I still haven't seen any public reference to the two recruits that I have heard about.
Gruschow looks like another good recruit. She, along with Lauren Wash, were the two selections from the Atlantic District to the U-17 national development camp. And, looking at her running background, I can only hope that she transfers that kind of speed to the rink.

Are both of the other Recruits you are aware of Defense. There were two defense recruits watching the game last friday night in Niagara.

Good to hear of Gruschow's selection to the U17 development camp. Just looking at the stats of the Washington Pride, I was concerned that her points might be primarily due to the presence of Haley Skarupa being on that team. http://www.pridehockey.com/team_instance/stats/108046?subseason=53700

Both were Defense (correction from my earlier post), so its possible.

Interesting that they would attend an away game. Taht seems odd to me.

Not necessarily odd if they are recruits from WNY or Ontario, getting an opportunity to meet with the coaches/team while saving an extra 10 hours round trip in the car.

One of the committed recruits that I am aware of is from Ontario, and not far from Niagara. Maybe if I drop one clue per week we will have it by the time the roster is announced for next year.

It does make indeed make sense if the recruit has already commited. It wouldn't if we were trying to convince her to come.

Re: RPI 2011-12 season

I am going out on a limb and predicting that the Engineers will sweep their conference-opening weekend at home against Quinnipiac and Princeton...two good teams. The Engineers (ranked #27 in the Rutter rankings) started the season well with two wins and two ties on the road against slightly (and inappropriately) higher ranked Connecticut and Vermont but then disappointed in the match-ups against Niagara and Robert Morris. As this team's two freshmen goalies gain confidence and the D gels around them, I think RPI has the talent to surprise a few, and it will start with two upsets this weekend. Based on the ECAC polls thread, they are 5-2 underdogs in both games (with yours truly casting dissenting votes on both). Quinnipiac (picked by some to finish as high as second in the ECAC) have been unimpressive so far and are ranked #25 in Rutter, while Princeton are untested and ranked #18 based on last year's results. As usual, all of that is irrelevant, and it come down to who wants it most and what kind of fan support turns up at HFH.

No need to drop hints for me I know who they are but Like you I believe they should be announced elsewhere before I give out any names.

Re: RPI 2011-12 season

I haven't been able to watch the Engineers yet this year so I would be interested in hearing from anyone who has a perspective on their current 8 game winless streak. It looks like they have been strong defensively, most games have been fairly even in shots, and the scores have been close (except for the one bizarre game where they lost to RMU 5-1 despite having a big shot advantage). The only other time in the team's history that they have gone 8 without a win was at the end of the '06'07 season. This weekend against Brown and Yale should be one of the most winnable weekends in their schedule - hope they can solve the scoring drought and come away with a couple wins.

I was out of town this past weekend but based on the previous games, it seems the woes on this team are very similar to some of what we've seen from the men's team - short bench thanks to injuries, generally solid play, but just a straight up hard time putting the puck in the net. It's certainly not for lack of opportunities. Bad penalties...or penalties at inopportune times have not helped matters. The team appears "hot and cold" sometimes...they will pen up an opponent in their defensive zone for 5-7 minutes with sustained pressure but no scoring, then all of a sudden they are on their heels and facing the same situation stuck on their own end of the ice.

One thing I think could actually play to the Engineers' favor is the surprisingly successful weekend Union had. A win and a tie against the North Country is impressive given how quickly Union was pegged to finish 12th again. I expected to see some improvement from them, but it looks like Union may have found a formula that is going to keep them in a lot of games this season. Hopefully the end result is that opponents will be forced to stop essentially preparing for one opponent only.

I agree about this weekend being winnable, but I am slightly concerned about the relative trouble RPI has had the past few seasons against teams like Brown and Union. They clamp down defensively and for a team that is having scoring trouble, that could make for some trouble. I am optimistic though that the team will find a way to pick up points this weekend.

Re: RPI 2011-12 season

Interesting news...Cornell will be without 6 of its top players when it visits the Field House on 1/7. Four F, one D, and one G will be playing for Team Canada in the Meco Cup U-22 tourney in Germany from 1/3-1/8.

http://cornellbigred.com/news/2011/11/9/WICE_1109111817.aspx

An incredible embarrasment of riches on that roster! While those 6 will be away when Cornell plays RPI, they should have back in the line-up their 4 best players and coach, all currently with Canadian national team at the 4 Nations Cup. If the national team and U-22 team ever played at the same time Cornell would have a pretty short bench .

Re: RPI 2011-12 season

I was recently directed to this site by a friend, who asked me if my daughter was at the RPI vs Niagara game. He said that people were trying to find out who the recruits were. Well my daughter has given me permission to release her name, Brandi Banks defence for Stoney Creek Jr.
