Haggerty and Laliberte are Grade-A, ready-to-play prospects whose ceiling looks as high or higher than either Polacek or Helfrich. I'll be stunned if they don't combine for at least 20 goals (barring injury). Add in the greener, but still extremely skilled, Schroeder and Neal and we should very well be looking at 30+ goals from our freshmen, which would just about fill in Chase and Tyler's 35 from last year. Add to this improvements from guys who played smaller roles last year (and faced injuries): Higgs, O'Grady, Lee, AAG, and our offense will be just fine. Might not be a lot BETTER than last year, but our defense (minus goaltending) surely will.
I'm a little amazed at the focus of no 10 goal scorers returning for RPI and their predicted 9th place finish. Cornell does not return any 10 goal scorers either on a team that scored only 86 goals last year. I think over 40% of their minimal scoring is gone. Apologies to Chevy Chase and those who were told there would be no math but RPI returns players who scored 64 goals last year. Since Polacek & Helfrich will not dominate on the PP this year it is reasonable that other veterans will pick up that slack and Laliberte & frosh co may just score a point or two. Cornells goaltending had exactly 1 game of experience coming into last years play but the writer left that out. . I wasn't impressed with their goalie against Yale in AC but it could have been Yale was so dominant. In any event it doesn't look like they have the big solid D they usually have this year. My money is on a higher than 9th place finish. Haven't made my ECAC standings picks yet but 3-6 is more likely. If Union finishes 4th are they no longer on the Rise? JMO
