Re: RPI 2011-12 Season: Posts on a Message Board

In his lists of the pros and cons of going to HE, Weaver listed that travel to the HE is easier. Just curious from people who have been to most/all of the rinks, is this correct? Is SLU and Clarkson (which is one trip) harder to get to than Orono? Colgate and Cornell are a off the main roada but so is UVM and I guess Dartmouth. Opinions. I assume that he wasn't counting Notre Dame.
Putting aside Maine....even if their not closer they are for the most part an easier drive with the bulk of them being in the Boston area for me its all highway I live about 10 min from I90...Not to mention Im not a Big Boston fan (M*******s) but given my choice between a weekend in Ithaca,Hamilton,or Potsdam(granted all garden spots) Im all about Boston.

So WaP didn't give us a cheering section (it being the first week and all). Is it safe to assume that we want the teams we play later in the season to do well and the teams we don't play to do poorly?

This early in the season, rooting against Clarkson and Union makes sense, even though I agree that we are better off if they do well. I mean, even though it is a long shot, if Union loses it might keep Hokydad a way for a few days. :)

Re: RPI 2011-12 Season: Posts on a Message Board

The "cheering section" was used to tell us which teams have the best chance in improving our RPI and PWR. In general, we want not only us to win (obviously), but we also want ECAC teams to win in their non-conference games, as well as any team we happen to be playing in a non-conference game, as it would help our Common Opponents ranking.

So, in short, root for an ECAC sweep.

Yeah, I just realized that the cheering section didn't come around until January last year (also around the time I started really paying attention to games that didn't happen in the Field House). I edited my first message accordingly.

Ithaca is Gorges. :D

Another argument for RPI to go to HE - we don't have to root for Union.

Oh wait, then we have to root for BC.

I go out for three hours bike riding and I am over a page behind. I can guess who is here. Without reading what he said, I will add to the conversation that JFK was cut by an ECHL team yesterday -- Curadi is an improvement.

Now to read if that is relevant. :)

Loved the passion with which JFK played and was aware that he was a great fellow to have in the locker room. But his tenure at RPI does not rank him anywhere in the top 20-30 defensemen. He was an offensive liability at times and certainly could never be considered any sort of offensive threat. Defensively he had good games and poor games and the consistency was just never there. I guess the ECHL team saw his capabilities quickly and made a decision. Just my 2¢

Ralph, yes HE is easier. I've been to every HE/ECAC rink except Notre Dame. Every HE arena is close to a major highway, and you have many more schools in a compact area. Orono is a long trip mileage-wise, but it doesn't require nearly the same amount of backroads driving that the North Country does. It is also convenient that you don't have to deal with NYC area traffic, which tends to slow everything up.

I have to agreew ith you for the most part. Difficult part for us is that when we stay at our home in the central Adirondacks-we get to SLU/Clarkson and Cornell/Colgate very easily. Getting to the HE arenas from there will be a nightmare for us and not much better coming up from Southern NJ. Plus-we lose our local game at princeton each year. But we wouldn't care as long as the team does well and we regain some national prominence.

You did mean defensive, didn't you?

I guess that Weaver doesn't live in the Adirondacks or NJ. :)

Seriously, he was talking about the RPI team which is based in Troy as you know. :p

I know I'd lose the easy drive to Colgate/Cornell, and the closest trip for me would be RPI. I'm not even sure if Orono or South Bend would be closer. EDIT: Just looked; it's the same.

However, it's not about us, it's about the team.

Ha, you should probably direct the "relax" comment at the other guy. I'm not sure where you've been for the past 10 years, but BU isn't BC. Anyway, yes, you've competed well against them--congrats. I even agree that BC and RPI would probably have some good, competitive games. Problem is, that's not what he said. I didn't start the trash talk either. So, you might want to take this up with him.
OK JD.. so I used a bit of hyperbole at the beginning of the statement. "Beat up on" has more than one meaning. It doesn't necessarily mean win convincingly. It also means take it to someone physically. And yes I was at the HE final. Great game for both sides.

You'll also notice that I said "if" at the end of the statement. I think that's a qualifier...

Let me try to put it all as succinctly as I can. I think this team will be strong in 2013. If we go to HE, I believe we'll do well. I think we'll be way underrated by the perennial front runners and that will make it even sweeter if we have a good first couple of years in the league. I'm not predicting long term dominance. I wouldn't be foolish enough to do that even if I rooted for BC.

Re: RPI 2011-12 Season: Posts on a Message Board

Sure, if RPI is able to play BC tough like Merrimack has the past couple years, yes, you'll be happy. I agree with that. You might be underrated by BC fans in general, but I've already said that I think RPI would be a good, competitive team in HE. I can assure you that your team wouldn't be underrated by Jerry York.

No Ralph-it appeared to me many times that his presence on the ice actually hindered our offense from moving up and out of our own zone and he added little or nothing to our ability to score.

Exactly-please reread my last sentence in that post.

OK JD I think we're squared away now. I agree with you on York - great coach who is still on top of his game. Not sure the little dogs down the green line can say the same.

Jump for joy, Cornell!

Thanks, man. I mean that.
