Re: RPI 2011 - 12 Part IV: We ain't Bailen on this season yet, Go Red!!

Since this thread is wandering again, I figured that I could ask the following.

Has it snowed at all in the CD since when I went to watch the team play CC in late October?

It snowed sometime in the middle of last week...around the 7th or so. Just a few inches, and it disappeared after a couple days.

I don't know about the CD, but we finally got snow in Syracuse today. It wouldn't surprise me.

Re: RPI 2011 - 12 Part IV: We ain't Bailen on this season yet, Go Red!!

The keys to possibly salvaging this season with a playoff run imo are.

1. Appert realizing what is obvious to me and many others. Bryce merriam is not as good a goalie as Scott diebold and Scott needs to be the starter. I know some people will say we don`t score enough so it doesn`t matter who is in goal but i disagree.I feel every team in the league knows Bryce has many weaknesses in his game and will continue to explot them. I know this is harsh but this is D1 not pee wees the best guy has to start no matter what class he is in.
2. Our upper class defensemen have to start playing like they give a ****. Many times they look like they don`t really care anymore.
3. The freshmen forwards are going to have to step up. I realize it really isin`t fair to hang such a burden on Frosh but I just don`t think the upperclassmen have the talent to do it.
4. Appert needs to start having a better feel for the game. He is starting to be like fridge in the Time out department. Always calling one after the damage is done or not at all. The home game with Union was a good example of being asleep behind the bench.

Happy holidays to all.

Disagree here, the frosh have been stepping it up lately. McGowan scored last weekend, and Haggerty and Schroeder have been showing good life, especially as of late, Schroeder has been all over the place generating chances and beating out icings. I think we need to see our older guys, especially Lee, Rogic and O'Grady (with all due respect, it will come) put more points on the board and take the feeling away from the freshmen that they have to do everything. Haggerty has been out the last few games and Neal has been out all season pretty much which left a gap as of late for the youngsters. Hopefully the break will do us good and we can turn this thing around asap. Besides that i agree for the most part Happy Holidays to all,Lets Go Red

I have to agree with 2,3,4 for sure since i have been saying these same things for some time. I do think that Merriam could be a first class goalie given the right team in front of him. Last year down here at Princeton he was just spectacular. We have just hung him out to dry far too often this year and although we seemed to play well defensively in front of him in the earlier games this year, lately his defense has not been giving him the same kind of support and he has not been able to win games by himself.

I think you are totally wrong here....I feel both DF and SA take (took) advantage of their time-outs. Please let me know what makes you an expert as to when time outs should be called!!!! Maybe you should go back to sleep!!!!

I think that SA does, but Fridgen seemed to rarely use them.

I agree. Die old MAY be a bit better, but it is too early in his career to tell.
The main issue continues to be the poor play od the upperclassmen. We knew that the upperclassman forwards wouldn't score a lot, but they have scored almost nothing. The team may have been able to overcome that and win a few more games if they had done other things well on a regular basis. The more experienced guys have not provided the level of physical play expected, have coughed up the puck too often and taken too many bad penalties. I said a week or so back that I fully expect to see major changes in the second half. The team seems healthy so the coaches will have options. I expect we will see more ice time for more of the young guys and less for some of the upperclassmen in key points of games. Don't be surprised to see some veterans in the stands at times, as well. Appert is loyal to veterans, but it is painfully obvious that many of the Jrs. and Srs are under performing, to say the least.
Let's hope I'm wrong and these guys step it up in the second half, but they have been given plenty of opportunities and they have just not delivered.

First, as to why we don't name names when it comes to that, I give you... Mike Gundy.

Also, when we say quit, we're talking about inside the game. There isn't a doubt in anyone's mind that no single player has given up on the season. Everyone's still there, and everyone's still working hard. However, to see (or hear) a lackadaisical third period after losing a lead is, in my eyes, players giving up. In anyone's eyes, heck even the team we are playing, that is unacceptable.

I am getting VERY close to putting a Kevin Bacon movie clip up here...
Im not advocating naming names....just sayin its one thing to stand up in a crowd and proclaim your going to kick someones a**...its a whole differnt thing to stand in a crowd and point one person out and say Im going to kick YOUR a**.So to say someone quit is a strong claim...maybe they are frustrated or mad but to say they quit or wilted like a flower however you want to dance around it is a strong statement...Ill say it agian I see no evidence of anyone quitting !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No one's advocating kicking anyone's *** and I'm sorry you don't see what I see. But I'm not calling out anyone individually. These are COLLEGE STUDENTS we're talking about. Like Mike Gundy said, I'm not going to go after anyone who does the right thing off the ice and may not play as well on Saturday. These guys are class acts but that doesn't mean some of them need a kick in the pants. Those who need that kick should know who they are. Those that don't should play like they do - so what's the point in, as morons on the internet, trying to make examples of people?

IMO stands for In My Opinion not IN my EXPERT opinion. I am as entitled to my opinion as anyone else on this board. I have been attending RPI games since 1970 and have witnessed many times the good and bad results of time out usage. Trust me when I tell you that waiting until you are hopelessly beaten and calling one for the extra attacker when down by multiple goals very seldom works.

Doc, No argument that on several occasions the D has let Bryce down but IMO he has 2 major flaws in his game that aren`t getting any better and are being exploited more and more.

Good points NYHOCKEYGUY, If guys like Lee, o`grady and rogic start scoring the chances of having some late season success improves greatly. Lets hope some time off helps and they can get it done after christmas.

I most certainly agree-but we must remember that he was never recruited to be the number one goaltender for us. With York leaving a year early-and who could blame him-he was thrust into the role. If we were last year's team, scoring like we did then, he would look a lot better to us. But this is just my 2 cents since I am far from a goalie expert.

Fridgen seemed like he often forgot we had a timeout to use. Maybe I am missing something, but I haven't felt the same about SA. I do question some of his tactics at times but haven't seen anything involving timeouts that I could focus on

Exactly my opinion. We always seemed to be saying the Fridgen should have called a timeout, but he rarely did. OTOH, I think that SA does a great job at calling timeouts. That and recruiting are two of the things that I would never fault him for to date. Using one timeout at the most propitious time is very difficult, without having the benefit of hindsight, and SA does this very well.

Either we have different definitions of "quitting", or you leave games at the second intermission. I may not have been at the first Union game, but just hearing Kurt's (or was it Perry's?) call, it sounded like we didn't even bother showing up for the third (figuratively), and put forth no sense of urgency to get back in the game. If that's not giving up, I don't know what is.
