Well of course, do you think they'll call out their players in public for that? I know there was a "puppy poop" comment a couple years ago...
You don't have to mention your players by name to agree with the refs when they are correct. There is a fine line here. I do feel, and I think that RC said, that we have to somehow get on the good graces of the refs or at least some of them. Schafer somehow has done that, and I have never noted a halo over his head. ;)

Even when we successfully kill off penalties, as we have done often this season, it tires out important players needlessly.

Disagree completely.

What are you seeing that I am not?
I see us taking bad penalties and not being able to come back. But I don't see any lack of interest.
I see some bad decisions, especially late in games, but I don't see any lack of intensity.
What am I missing?

I'm not going to call out individuals here - these are college students at the end of the day. But I am certainly disturbed by the reaction I've seen to giving up goals and the usual result that follows of underwhelming play by more than a couple of guys. I have no doubt they all want to win, and I'm not saying that guys are intentionally dogging it when they get down.

Considering we've won 3 games, and two of them were shutouts... Bingo.

Re: RPI 2011 - 12 Part IV: We ain't Bailen on this season yet, Go Red!!

One thing I've been wondering as of late... Obviously there's a synergy that develops between three players on a line, and also between defensive pairings, but what about the bridge between the two? With four lines and three D pairings, there seems to me to be a bit of a gap there. Obviously I wouldn't advocate shortening the bench, but I do wonder how that synergy (or possible lack) between the forwards and the D affects teams. Typically I don't see the same lines with the same D pairs (although I'm usually more preoccupied with the play of the puck than the specific players on the ice)...

I agree with not calling out individual players most of the the time, but I think Appert is also frustrated and called out his upperclassmen before the Union game and got no response. Most of the juniors and seniors have played below expectations most of the year and the leadership from them has not been evedent in games. I fully expect major changes starting with the tournament later this month. The coaches have no choice at this point. I think you will see different combinations on the ice, less ice time for some of the verterans and probably a seat in the stands for some of them. If you are going to be the worst team in the league and one of the worst in the country, why not get the young guys more experience. I'm not advocating giving up on this season, because we have seen that anything can happen once the post-season begins, but it is time to admit that it is not going to get any better with these juniors and seniors logging major ice time.

OK, that makes sense. I wasn't looking for pointing out individuals, but reactions do say a lot about the team.
I will look for that in the future.

Didn't the Soviet powerhouses of the 60's, 70's and 80's usually skate as units of 5? I know the Detroit Red Wings copied that with pretty good success. Not saying we could do it-but I think FlagDude may be on to something here. Or maybe I am taking too much medication today....?

I don't see why we couldn't at least try it with one line and D pair (aside from the fact that none of us are among the three that are paid to make these decisions). Find the combination that has been performing the best thus far, and leave them together for an entire game (assuming no misconducts).

Yes, the Soviets did that.

That is the key-penalties. We take so many that keeping a unit of 5 together really takes a lot of adaptation during the game. But I do think it would be something to try.

Re: RPI 2011 - 12 Part IV: We ain't Bailen on this season yet, Go Red!!

I see no signs of quitting...players do not get concussions in practice if thev'e quit.Anyone whom even suggest so I can only hope is frustrated and didn't really mean it.This is a great bunch of kids we have here and they are putting it on the line every game.If anyone feels as though individuals on the team have quit and will not name names I don't think you are being fair to all the other players.Either name names or shut up!!!...There comes a time when you either have someones back or ya don't it appears some poster here don't.ANYONE CAN BE A BACK SLAPPER WHEN ITS ALL GOING GOOD...They may not be playing well or making mistakes....but "quitters"I think not....so if this is your team lets man up and get their backs.....I hope I never jump in a fox hole w/some posters here !!!!!!

First, as to why we don't name names when it comes to that, I give you... Mike Gundy.

Also, when we say quit, we're talking about inside the game. There isn't a doubt in anyone's mind that no single player has given up on the season. Everyone's still there, and everyone's still working hard. However, to see (or hear) a lackadaisical third period after losing a lead is, in my eyes, players giving up. In anyone's eyes, heck even the team we are playing, that is unacceptable.

I am getting VERY close to putting a Kevin Bacon movie clip up here...

Do you even know what clip I'm talking about? It's very loosely related to WaP's November 8th post.
