Re: RPI 2011 - 12 Part IV: We ain't Bailen on this season yet, Go Red!!

Either we have different definitions of "quitting", or you leave games at the second intermission. I may not have been at the first Union game, but just hearing Kurt's (or was it Perry's?) call, it sounded like we didn't even bother showing up for the third (figuratively), and put forth no sense of urgency to get back in the game. If that's not giving up, I don't know what is.

I hear what you are saying, but it goes back to my comment, that this team doesn't change its demeanor. It doesn't get high after scoring a big goal and it doesn't push back when the other team goes to the next gear.
It plays at one level, and when you get to crunch time, they look lethargic. Not because they are playing any worse, but the opponent has gotten better.
Quit is a very nasty word. But RC has pointed out some problems with attitude, and we should all be looking for it when the team is back on the ice.
I don't believe they (individually or collectively) are quitting. But they aren't pushing back either.
We will see when they come back from the break.
This is the first season since SA took over, that we were not excited about coming back after the holidays. In the past, we were disappointed, maybe this year they change that. I hope so.

Lets go red!!!!!!!!

This thread is getting depressing. :(

Hopefully the players all did well on their finals. (That was last week IIRC.)

Agreed. But, having not watched this team more than three times, I find it difficult to add to the discussion.

Wednesday through Tuesday schedule, so there's still some people on campus finishing up.

My recollection is that when I was at RPI finals were for a week without an intervening weekend. Of course, they also were in January after a couple of weeks of classes post-Holidays. IIRC, we returned on a Wednesday to even things up (15 each of M-F) since over Thanksgving we were off starting on Wednesday.

The next home game is the NBC Sports Network broadcast on the 6th against Dartmouth. Attendance for this one isnt looking good at all, besides for being during break, the Big Green arent exactly a team that will bring extra fans into the building like Clarkson or Cornell would. Has there been any progress on getting a band together for this game?

The current schedule has Labor Day (Monday), Columbus Day (Monday classes replacing Tuesday, so Tuesday), and Thanksgiving (Wed-Fri) to get an even 15 of each into the schedule. Then, there's two study days and then a week of finals. That's why it carries over the weekend.

In the spring, there are only classes on Monday and Tuesday of the last week of the semester to make up for President's Day (Monday) and GM Day (Tuesday), then two study days, then finals start on Friday. (My first two years, we had MLK, Jr. Day off, too, making study days start on Thursday and having finals run without an intervening weekend. Cue "Get off my lawn" rant.)

If you're down in the third period and "not pushing back," what is that called, then?

I don't think they know how to elevate their game to push back. They seem to be playing at the same level for 60 minutes.
I really don't think that they are quitting.
It will be good to be healthy and ready for the UCONN tourney. We'll see if playing with a full deck can change their level of play.

Almost right on the second semester (although it could have changed from 2008 to 2012)... MLK Day off for the Monday, President's Day off for the Tuesday (Follow Monday schedule that Tuesday), GM Day for Wednesday, and then the two study days for Thursday and Friday. Finals week is one uninterrupted week, the next week is senior week and commencement.

Yeah, this past spring they moved GM day to Tuesday so they didn't have to deal with the two "Wednesdays" in a row following Presidents' Day, which ensured that about half of campus had a 5-day weekend. This semester study days were Monday and Tuesday last week, and finals run from last Wednesday to tomorrow.

It did change.

Are you calling them some kind of mindless automaton? I don't get this. This seems to be going out of your way to avoid stating the obvious.

I wonder if the lack of fluctuation in the level of game play has anything to do with the fact that Coach Appert doesn't believe in momentum. (I think he said that in an interview once, please tell me if I'm making it up.)

If you aren't viewing the game as either going your way or going the opposing team's way, but just happening, then there's not a lot of reason to change the way you play it.
They do have sparks of extra energy every once in a while when something momentous happens, with the one glaring exception being the home game against Union, when they had an extra attacker and absolutely nothing changed-but that game was so terrible and uncharacteristic I've stopped including it in my overall analysis of the team.

You're not making it up, but it wasn't exactly that. I believe what was said was that there's such thing as momentum, but it only goes as far as the players wish to carry it, or something like that. I know what I just said doesn't make sense, but it was something close.

As for not including Union in our discussion, I think that's one of the primary motivating factors in the discussions between TB, RC, EHF, and myself. If they don't want to step up and try to take the initiative to get back in it when they're down, then it's just as good as giving up. I could say with 99.99999999999% certainty that these kids don't give up in the classroom if things aren't going well, and that should be commended, since that's the primary reason they're at RPI. However, why should the ice be any different?

My recollection, which may not be correct, was that the second semester had a week off in the spring so everything was even. We didn't get off for Presidents' Day or any day in GM week. Of course, they don't have strippers anymore during GM week. (The price that is paid for a coed campus. :D) Then again most of the strippers weren't that good looking, and they only stripped to g-string and pasties.

Edit: Forgot about the free beer which probably dissapeared with the raising of thw drinking age from 18 to 21.
