Wait, you can't be serious. Byron Pipes was a disaster as president. When it comes to hockey, I don't recall him doing anything to help the program. If my memory is incorrect, please enlighten me.
Say what you will about her leadership style, Dr. Jackson has pumped a great deal of money into the program in increased salaries, an additional position, significant improvements to the facilities, and helping to save scholarships. Just because she doesn't go to every game, and either did Pipes, doesn't mean she is not in touch. Of course it is Shirley's decision; they all are. :)
I think RPI should move to Hocey East if invited, just because I don't trust that the Ivies won't pull out and have their own little 6-team league and apply for an automatic bid.

What the hell are you smoking??? Give me some please! Pipes also elevated salaries of coaches from below average to average. Dr. Pipes used to write personal notes to players....he was in touch with the players and coaches on a personal basis. Unless you can get through the body guards, or make an appointment that she doesn't cancel before seeing her, there is no access to the almighty whatsoever!!!! Shirley had to do something to elevate the salaries and facilities....that is very obvious. What is apparent is that you don't know the workings behind the scenes....only what is presented on the surface.....typical Shirley style!!!

You do realize she has bodyguards because she was on the NRC during Clinton's tenure as POTUS and is on the board of directors of many major corporations, yes?

I'm also not sure I'd call her out on not caring about the hockey program, since we have had money dumped into it and into athletics in general at RPI since she took the position, and I don't know what goes on in her head. She's doing her job as president, which is campaigning for her school and turning it into a household name. Not sure why she gets as much flack as she does, she's done a lot of good, some bad. Just my thought spill here.

I took close-ups of each half and added to the set...hope that helps :)

...and apparently Huntsville has found financial backing for another 3 years...hopefully they can stick it out and find a conference.

Thanks. I was correct about the players whom I previously identified. I still can't identify Kevin O'Hara. I guess that i don't remember what he looked like. I wonder who the other players were since I don't remember there names. There was a barber shop, I think on Hutton Street, west of the Notty Pine, where the barber had a stick signed by that team on a wall. Checking Google Streetview, there is nothing there now, I think that Waite21 is correct about the spelling of van Leuven.

FWIW, in a tweet he sent out yesterday, Mike McMahon of the Eagle Tribune seems to think Hockey East could run a year or two with 11 teams, while making the "right" choice for team number 12. Also mentioned both UConn and Holy Cross have informed Atlantic Hockey officials that they are exploring Hockey East. As of now, it seems only RPI, UConn and HC are interested, no mention of Quinnipiac. IMO, I get the feeling HE is waiting to see what kind of commitment comes out of Storrs.
Heres McMahon's writeup from CHN:

Ken Schott's weekly preview interview with Coach: http://www.dailygazette.com/videos/2011/nov/03/850/

Appert discusses his goalie-pulling strategy briefly-should set everyone's minds at ease as to what he was thinking:p

SA has a lot of talents and one for sure is that he talks confidently. Makes you feel like we can snap out of the offensive funk as soon as we are healthy again. I believe him! Go Red!!

I've often thought that head coaches of top-level programs are like CEOs. They set out broad goals for the team and the program, and they use a staff of talented assistants to bring special focus to various areas of the game (the "game within the game" so to speak).

That was apparent here. I really liked his comments on the players needing to take on personal accountability to themselves and to the team. I also noticed how he discussed how he works with his assistant coaches to provide the players direction on specific phases of the game.

The fact that most if not all of the players are majoring in Business Administration now makes much more sense, it fits the model.

Re: RPI 2011-12 Part II: We Like to Post!

Just for fun, I listed out all the teams that played in NCAA men's division one ice hockey championship game. In the 62 years that it has been played, 27 teams have made the final, 18 teams have won championships, only two teams have a 1.000 winning percentage once they have reached the championship game, and only one of those teams has won the championship more than once.

I think it was Ralph who said we are on pace to win again in 2015 - 2016....every 31 years, like clockwork!

PS I was also pleasantly surprised to notice that, of the 12 teams currently in the ECAC, 8 of them have made the finals.

Re: RPI 2011-12 Part II: We Like to Post!

They did play with 9. Would 11 be so different?

I suspect that some schools would favor us and some would favor UConn. If HC and/or QU were in the mix it would add to the confusion. I tried to guess what each school's opinion is, but I really don't know. I would think that UML and Merrimack would favor us since another non-DI school would not be a force againct them. Who else? Perhaps UVM from ECAC days, and BU (at least Parker) seems to like us. The other state flagship schools (UMO, UNH, UMass) would probably favor UConn. I can't guess what NU's take would be.

The other church schools (Notre Dame, BC, and PC) might favor HC if they were in the mix. If it was just between us and UConn, we might get BC's vote since according to the UConn thread, BC and UConn are still mad from when BC left the Big East. I wonder if SA was farsighted enough that he scheduled the game this year at ND to get their vote.

All just guess work.

It's been said on WaP, but one big plus that RPI has is hockey fans that travel.

Not at all, they could go on indefinitely with 11 if they wanted to.

BC's fanbase (from what I can tell on BCI and the boards) is not a fan of RPI, and would probably prefer anyone else. My impression from what I have read is that they would prefer UConn over RPI, even with the UConn/ACC ugliness. I'm sure they would love to annually facestomp UConn in hockey. They seem the most gung ho on HC and Q though. I think there might be something to the Jerry York doesn't like RPI talk I've heard. Maybe he has a burr across his butt from his days at Clarkson....

You're right, it is all just guess work. For the most part I agree with your assessment of teams' leanings. When it comes to history, hockey, fan base, arena etc... I feel like the choice is a no brainer. RPI would be a wonderful fit in Hockey East. RC, yes, we will be here. It would be nice to not have to speculate for the next 2+ years though...

That was it. I believe he partnered with another gentlemen for a few years after he got out of the US Coast Guard, but the shop you mention is certainly it. That stick you mention in particular could be one of several signed sticks my father has down in his basement from the ol' shop...one I'm certainly aware of is Bill Sack's from the following photo: http://www.flickr.com/photos/69354516@N07/6307801976/in/set-72157628040235820

No, you obviously have the superior "stuff". I am not on campus every day any more, but was through the 80's and early 90's. Pipes did little for the men's hockey team and athletics in general. Again, you and many others dislike Shirley for some very good reasons, but don't deny the facts. She has pushed investment in the athletics infrastructure and given the hockey programs what they need to succeed. I don't know if she sends love notes to the players, and who cares? She meets with Knowlton and Appert when necessary and from what I have seen supports the program and Appert's efforts to engage past players. Were you around behind the scenes during the 25 year celebration of the '85 Championship team? She was and those guys noticed.

I missed your earlier post that stated that your grandfather was that barber. I went there for haircuts my entire time at RPI as far as I can recall.

Re: RPI 2011-12 Part II: We Like to Post!

Very good observation. Though the CEO comparison fits big-time college football and basketball better than hockey, I think Appert does run his program like that. He appears to be a "hands-on" CEO, however. There is very little that goes on in this program that doesn't have his finger prints on it.

Not since Appert has arrived (the last 6 years) has she "pushed investment in the athletics infrastructure".....like I said.....something she realized she HAD to do!

I don't dislike her.....she is great (see post #849)! And yes I was around behind the scenes, won't even touch your comments about the '85 Championship celebration.

You are either one of her two security detail people who sit outside her house 24/7 or her driver!

I don't know enough about the prior presidents of RPI to make a comparison, and while I agree that Shirley is... less-than-perfect, but aren't ECAV and the renovations to the Field House "investment in the athletics infrastructure"

Nope; don't like guns and lost my livery medallion years ago. As for her HAVING to make the improvements, why would you do it if you didn't have to? The athletic facilities were awful for years before she got here, including during the Pipes years. I can’t name one significant improvement to the athletic facilities during his tenure. Wait, maybe the pool was built during his time. Touch the ’85 celebration comments, please.
