Re: RPI 2011-12 Part II: We Like to Post!

I don't think it will be UConn. I've heard no discussions down here about upgrading the program. More importantly, they have significant problems on both the scholarship (Title IX) and facilities side. One thing I'm sure of is that absent a directed donation, there will be no upgrades to the Freitas Ice Forum before they build a fancy basketball practice facility as virtually all of their top-tier D-I competitors have. It's actually a sore spot within the UConn Athletic Department and failure to raise funds for it was one of the reasons behind the new president recently running off the AD. Lastly, with the complete chaos that is the Big East and the potential risk to hundreds of millions of dollars invested in the existing FB, BB and other programs, UConn is a little distracted right now. If HE wants to wait until UConn can put some focus on whether to invest in upgrading the hockey program they are probably looking at waiting at least a year or two for a decision.

They seem to be waiting. :(

I agree. If UConn did make a push for HE, the most likely move would be to play (at minimum) HE conference games at the XL center. It's far from a slam dunk given that they would have to share the XL Center with both UConn bball teams and the CT Whale. I wonder if HE is enamored enough with the UConn name, that they would be willing to wait for UConn to figure out its non-hockey conference future and Title IX issues. It might be a while....

They did play with 9. Would 11 be so different?

I suspect that some schools would favor us and some would favor UConn. If HC and/or QU were in the mix it would add to the confusion. I tried to guess what each school's opinion is, but I really don't know. I would think that UML and Merrimack would favor us since another non-DI school would not be a force againct them. Who else? Perhaps UVM from ECAC days, and BU (at least Parker) seems to like us. The other state flagship schools (UMO, UNH, UMass) would probably favor UConn. I can't guess what NU's take would be.

The other church schools (Notre Dame, BC, and PC) might favor HC if they were in the mix. If it was just between us and UConn, we might get BC's vote since according to the UConn thread, BC and UConn are still mad from when BC left the Big East. I wonder if SA was farsighted enough that he scheduled the game this year at ND to get their vote.

All just guess work.

It's been said on WaP, but one big plus that RPI has is hockey fans that travel.

I disagree with you. Pipes took more of an interest in the hockey program in his short tenure than Shirley ever has!!!!! Unless I am not understanding you, it is now Shirley's decision. If I remember correctly, the decision not to go Hockey East back then had to do with the ECAC academic index, which the ECAC relaxed in favor of RPI staying in the league.

Wait, you can't be serious. Byron Pipes was a disaster as president. When it comes to hockey, I don't recall him doing anything to help the program. If my memory is incorrect, please enlighten me.
Say what you will about her leadership style, Dr. Jackson has pumped a great deal of money into the program in increased salaries, an additional position, significant improvements to the facilities, and helping to save scholarships. Just because she doesn't go to every game, and either did Pipes, doesn't mean she is not in touch. Of course it is Shirley's decision; they all are. :)
I think RPI should move to Hocey East if invited, just because I don't trust that the Ivies won't pull out and have their own little 6-team league and apply for an automatic bid.

I don't think HC is a legitimate contender. I used to go to games at the Hart Center when I lived up there and it's just not a hockey school. It's a small school (< 3,000 students) that is already at its limits supporting existing D-I programs. Furthermore, it is majority female - and the requirement to upgrade the women's program was one of the obstacles when they were being considered by the ECAC - so any men's scholarships must be matched at a greater than 1:1 rate. Lastly, the Hart Center is far too small (about 1,000 seats all on one side of the ice) and the Centrum downtown (now called the DCU Center) is far too big (about 15,000). There is no appropriate facility.

I don't like some of the changes made, like the elimination of Puckman, for one, although most of my disagreements reside outside the athletic department. Granted, my opinion matters about as much as the points on "Whose Line is it Anyway?"...

Ralph, please see my UCONN thread that talks of the obstacles to their entrance into HEA.

i realize that there are a lot of problems with UConn, and if it is UConn it will probably take a while for them to get a plan set. It could also be Syracuse, not that they seem to have plans for a men's team at present. And since ND was of interest to HE, perhaps they now want UWM. ;)

SU had to put in a women's team just to get through Title IX problems. I don't think they're getting a men's team anytime soon, especially considering the War Memorial is already double booked with the Crunch and the Silver Knights (and there won't be enough room in Tennilly).

Re: RPI 2011-12 Part II: We Like to Post!

It's the 65-66 frosh team which beat the varsity that year. I have never seen a picture of that team before. Looking at it and squinting, the goalie on the left at the front is Tom Nichol. Richard Scammell is the leftmost player standing. Three to the right is Barry Law, followed by Dale Watson (RIP :( ) and Pete Cinelli. The rightmost three players standing look like Gary Mitchell (not sure), Brian Dickey (not sure), and Colin Ingham, respectively. I can't identify Kevin O'Hara, the only other player to play on the varsity the next year, and I have no knowledge of the rest.

I was only able to pick out Scammell, Law and of course Watson, and Ingham. Great eyes there Ralph. This freshman team made me feel, in my last year at RPI, that we would survive and be back after the disastrous year for the varsity in 65-66.:)

Pardon my non-desire to scroll through pages of posts :D, but... any recent news or updates on Laliberte/Higgs/O'Grady/any other injuries we may have acquired, and whether or not they're going to be playing this weekend?

Higgs and O'Grady should be in, Laliberté and Neal are doubtful.

Re: RPI 2011-12 Part II: We Like to Post!

Yes, interesting stuff. Most of it is familiar to me, and I have some of the same programs. Can anyone identify this team picture http://www.flickr.com/photos/69354516@N07/6307276859/in/set-72157628040235820/? It must be a freshman or JV team because I think that is coach Neumann (sp?) but it is too blurry for me to make out who is there besides for Bill van Leuvan (sp?) .

I remember Bill van Leuven, though I'm no surer than Ralph that my spelling is accurate.

As I recall, he played goal for the freshman team at least one and maybe two years after his own freshman year, because RPI had no freshmen who played goal. Either Garry Kearns was unable to recruit a goalie or the goalie he recruited left school before the season started.

I can't remember another goalie, at any level, who agonized more after giving up a goal than van Leuven did. Didn't matter if it was a floater from center ice or a blast from 20 feet straight up the slot, he always looked like he was beside himself for not having stopped the thing.

I took close-ups of each half and added to the set...hope that helps :)

...and apparently Huntsville has found financial backing for another 3 years...hopefully they can stick it out and find a conference.
