RPI 2011-12 Part II: We Like to Post!

Re: RPI 2011-12 Part II: We Like to Post!

I agree that he has shown a lot and is very promising. But, am I crazy or were the first two goals on Saturday HORRIBLE softies? There's no arguing the first one, I think, and the second was a completely unscreened slapshot from just inside the blue line that went near post. Like I said, I'm excited for his strong start and am greatly surprised by the ability he's already shown, but mistakes like those reinforce that there's still a long way to go.

If I had to rate those two, the first one was really kind of fluky - soft, but he'd just made the save and I'm not 100% certain the rebound was anything but a "throw something up and see what happens." The second one was a pinpointed laser to the corner - I was more impressed by the skill of the shooter than I was disappointed by Diebold's inability to nab it. Plus it was on the power play.

That goes without saying.

Then why'd you say it?

Re: RPI 2011-12 Part II: We Like to Post!

As I noted earlier, I should hopefully have the pictures posted later tonight. For those interested, the memorabilia includes items from the late '60's through the early 70's :).

Re: RPI 2011-12 Part II: We Like to Post!

Hahaha...I think this has been beaten to death...

So put the club down, then. That's been the point from the start. Some people get it right away. Others, not so much.

...thanks for confirming your own statement above...um...son.

Why do you post, if this is what you come up with? Did you think this was some kind of witty retort?

The first goal was kind of a fluke,(the original stop was crazy good)but forwards do practice that and it happens more often than you would think. In fact I think Patrick Kane's stanley cup winning goal was from a bad angle and went off the back of the goalies leg(MY best Recollection)And the second goal well that was an absolute BOMB that just flat out beat him(no softie there)...no shame in that it happens to the best of them....Iam extremely high on Diebold so far it looks like he is the real deal !

Not that this is central to the discussion at hand, but Kane's goal came from in front of the goal (just a low angle) and did not bank off of Philly's goalie of the night.

The first goal was fluky, but it was also soft. That said, he did make the nice stop on the breakaway where the d-man couldn't do anything without causing a penalty / penalty shot.

All of the stuff on this gallery predates me by 30 to 40 years so I apologize I wasn't able to label everything. Feel free to fill in the blanks if you know who some of the photos are of...enjoy :).

Let me know if the link doesn't work...never used Flikr before...haha.

Great stuff! Will take me a while to go through all of this-but on first glance some things here really bring back the memories. Love the picture of Fred Kitchen and Jerry Knightley from the mid 60's.:)

Glad you like them Doc ;). This was all accrued from when my grandfather closed down his barbershop in the early 90's. His place was in the back of the Notty Pine (now a parking lot) from the '50's through the late 80's...and known as a hangout for some of the players and students. For the last ten years of the shops existence, he moved to the other side of 15th street where a salon now is. He traded haircuts for hockey tickets and our family loyalty to RPI hockey was born.

Yes, interesting stuff. Most of it is familiar to me, and I have some of the same programs. Can anyone identify this team picture http://www.flickr.com/photos/69354516@N07/6307276859/in/set-72157628040235820/? It must be a freshman or JV team because I think that is coach Neumann (sp?) but it is too blurry for me to make out who is there besides for Bill van Leuvan (sp?) .

I signed schedules are nice.

Re: RPI 2011-12 Part II: We Like to Post!

The reason that we should join HE, but it looks like they are going to go with 11 teams and wait. If we were going there in 2013, something should have happened by now.

Maybe I will be wrong, like with the snow.
FWIW, in a tweet he sent out yesterday, Mike McMahon of the Eagle Tribune seems to think Hockey East could run a year or two with 11 teams, while making the "right" choice for team number 12. Also mentioned both UConn and Holy Cross have informed Atlantic Hockey officials that they are exploring Hockey East. As of now, it seems only RPI, UConn and HC are interested, no mention of Quinnipiac. IMO, I get the feeling HE is waiting to see what kind of commitment comes out of Storrs.

IMO, the longer things drag out, the more it favors UConn. :(

UConn has always been the most rational selection from Hockey East's perspective, presuming they decide they want to put forward actual effort when it comes to hockey, and it's not hard to see why.

If RPI doesn't make it into Hockey East, we can all point the finger at Pipes.

I disagree with you. Pipes took more of an interest in the hockey program in his short tenure than Shirley ever has!!!!! Unless I am not understanding you, it is now Shirley's decision. If I remember correctly, the decision not to go Hockey East back then had to do with the ECAC academic index, which the ECAC relaxed in favor of RPI staying in the league.

Yeah, it is quite blurry...I'll double check the actual photo at home for labeling on the back, I could've missed it.

It's the 65-66 frosh team which beat the varsity that year. I have never seen a picture of that team before. Looking at it and squinting, the goalie on the left at the front is Tom Nichol. Richard Scammell is the leftmost player standing. Three to the right is Barry Law, followed by Dale Watson (RIP :( ) and Pete Cinelli. The rightmost three players standing look like Gary Mitchell (not sure), Brian Dickey (not sure), and Colin Ingham, respectively. I can't identify Kevin O'Hara, the only other player to play on the varsity the next year, and I have no knowledge of the rest.

I don't think it will be UConn. I've heard no discussions down here about upgrading the program. More importantly, they have significant problems on both the scholarship (Title IX) and facilities side. One thing I'm sure of is that absent a directed donation, there will be no upgrades to the Freitas Ice Forum before they build a fancy basketball practice facility as virtually all of their top-tier D-I competitors have. It's actually a sore spot within the UConn Athletic Department and failure to raise funds for it was one of the reasons behind the new president recently running off the AD. Lastly, with the complete chaos that is the Big East and the potential risk to hundreds of millions of dollars invested in the existing FB, BB and other programs, UConn is a little distracted right now. If HE wants to wait until UConn can put some focus on whether to invest in upgrading the hockey program they are probably looking at waiting at least a year or two for a decision.
