That was it. I believe he partnered with another gentlemen for a few years after he got out of the US Coast Guard, but the shop you mention is certainly it. That stick you mention in particular could be one of several signed sticks my father has down in his basement from the ol' shop...one I'm certainly aware of is Bill Sack's from the following photo: http://www.flickr.com/photos/69354516@N07/6307801976/in/set-72157628040235820

One of the all time best RPI goalies that I have seen.:)

Re: RPI 2011-12 Part II: We Like to Post!

I missed your earlier post that stated that your grandfather was that barber. I went there for haircuts my entire time at RPI as far as I can recall.

I used to go there also-albeit infrequently since I kept my hair very long even before it was fashionable later on in the 60's:p

Re: RPI 2011-12 Part II: We Like to Post!

I'll have to remember this post the next time that you accuse me of making puns. :p

My puns are edgy and exciting, your puns are sad and tragic.

Regardless, let it be known that R. Byron Pipes was an unmitigated disaster and there's a reason he's never held an administrative post since the trustees ran him out of town.

Re: RPI 2011-12 Part II: We Like to Post!

I posted the Saturday game yesterday. The video dropped a lot of frames during recording, which caused the audio to fall out of sync by quite a bit, as much as 10 seconds or so at times.

http://www.rpitv.org/productions/414-mens-hockey-vs-colorado-college

The 1st goal on Diebold is at timecode 16:30 in the 1st (we have a GREAT replay, and Diebold's reaction is amusing), RPI goal is at timecode 17:35 in the 2nd, second CC goal is at 19:00 in the 2nd, 3rd goal is at 9:00 in the 3rd, and no one cares about the ENG.

Re: RPI 2011-12 Part II: We Like to Post!

Just for fun, I listed out all the teams that played in NCAA men's division one ice hockey championship game. In the 62 years that it has been played, 27 teams have made the final, 18 teams have won championships, only two teams have a 1.000 winning percentage once they have reached the championship game, and only one of those teams has won the championship more than once.

I think it was Ralph who said we are on pace to win again in 2015 - 2016....every 31 years, like clockwork!

PS I was also pleasantly surprised to notice that, of the 12 teams currently in the ECAC, 8 of them have made the finals.

Any chance we could see that list or you could post it somewhere? After reading what you did, I am also curious...

By chance..........was the name of the shop on 15th Street "Clem Zotto's Beman Park Barber Shop"?

Since I usually combine my visit to the barber with a stop at the Knotty Pine for a pizza and some liquid refreshment-I usually could not remember much from that day.;)

Re: RPI 2011-12 Part II: We Like to Post!

That sounds vaguely familiar, but ajt6954 should know. :)

The Clem Zotto name sounds familiar...and would make sense...isn't the Notty called Zotto's Notty Pine? To my knowledge, for the first ten or so years, I believe the shop was indeed named for my grandfather's business partner...and that could have been Clem...but will confirm with him. After that, he went on his own as Gene Traver's Barbershop. He moved from the Notty Pine locale to what is now June's Unisex Hairstyling (across from Ali Baba restaurant) which he used to share with a florist for some time as well.

I apologize for the lack of specifics regarding timing, but it's been about 5 or so years since him and I have reminisced about "the shop" ;). He's usually more interested in hearing about my pursuit of the next ex-girlfriend...haha. I'll make sure to ask for some more details next time I speak with him for ya.

I've never before tried to copy from an excel workbook into the text box, let's see how it goes here.

Hmm...not so good. :( any pointers on how to clean up the formatting would be appreciated.

Also, astute readers will notice that there are two more winners than there are 2nd place finishers listed. Denver's 1973 2nd-place finish and Wisconsin's 1992 2nd-place finish were vacated by the NCAA. I did not include those two in the 'finals' total.

Code:

USCHO ignores multiple spaces in a row unless you put it in "CODE" brackets

Code:
[B][U]Team Finals winner 2nd	[/U][/B]
Michigan 12 9 3
North Dakota 12 7 5
Minnesota 11 5 6
Boston University 10 5 5
Boston College 10 4 6
Denver 9 7 2 also 1973 2nd place vacated
Wisconsin 8 6 2 also 1992 2nd place vacated
Michigan Tech 7 3 4
Michigan State 5 3 2
Colorado College 5 2 3
Maine 5 2 3
Lake Superior St. 4 3 1
Cornell 4 2 2
Harvard 3 1 2
Clarkson 3 0 3
[COLOR="Red"][B]Rensselaer         2      2      0[/B][/COLOR]
Minnesota–Duluth 2 1 1
Northern Michigan 2 1 1
Dartmouth 2 0 2
New Hampshire 2 0 2
St. Lawrence 2 0 2
Bowling Green 1 1 0
Brown 1 0 1
Colgate 1 0 1
Miami University 1 0 1
Notre Dame 1 0 1
Providence 1 0 1

The other way to do it is to put it in a "p" tag, like Rainman does for the ECAC Pick 'Em threads.

FreshFish,
I suggest replacing the tabs by multiple spaces as burgie12 did. Depending upon how others' browsers treat tabs, yours may not allign correctly. It is a pain, but as far as I know it is the best way.

The other way to do it is make the team names short enough where they each take less space than a tab. However, tab lengths vary, so it's best to just use spaces.

I know, I don't like it either, but it works.

PS The best way to make sure everything lines up is to use notepad or a similar fixed-width text editor, because that's how text within CODE brackets is treated. If you try and line everything up while typing on your browser, it'll look right at first, but when you post it, you'll have to spend lots of time fixing it.

PPS If you insist on using tabs, use the "p" tag. It'll keep the formatting like you want it.

The name Gene Travers sounds more familiar and Zotto could be familiar due to the Notty Pine. Since I have not been to the barber shop since 1974, it's all quite fuzzy, although I do remember that there was a lot of RPI hockey memorabilia there.

Re: RPI 2011-12 Part II: We Like to Post!

We seem to be getting bonus coverage (if you call it that) of a Clarkson women's basketball game without sound on America One.

Re: RPI 2011-12 Part II: We Like to Post!

...anyone else thinking now the two things that I am thinking:

1) RPI seriously needs to get their s*** together when it comes to offense, like, STAT
2) Why are we still pulling the goalie with exorbitant amounts of time left in the game?!

I know that I used to get my hair cut by Clem Zotto when I was in school in the late '60's.

IIRC, the barber's son, Clem Jr., was the basketball coach at Troy High. He had some terrific players there, including Luther Rackley, who went on to play a number of years in the NBA.

I am one of those who questioned some of the times we pulled the goalie(especially when down 3-0 or when we are a man short). But tonight i question why we did not pull the goalie when down 3-1 and we had a full 2 minute power play with about 4-5 minutes left to play. Just looking for a little consistency I guess. I am not sure anything would have made a difference though tonight-we played a very poor second and third period.
