Re: RPI 2011-12 Part II: We Like to Post!

One thing that should definitely be addressed, though, is the 2-for-34 power play. Say what you want about our competition, but that is just plain abysmal. I've only been able to watch one game so I can't make any intelligent statements as to what is happening, but I will ask questions. Are we going back to our 2007-09 ways? Is there no shooting and instead just looking for a back-door pass? Are we not moving the puck quick enough? Are we just up against good defense and not much we can do about it? Even that last question I'm willing to accept.

Penalty kill and process are nice, we seem to have those down, but at the end of the day, if you can't put the puck in the net, you can't win. We had our chances, we couldn't take advantage, we lose. :(

The past few years our power play has seemed to had a frustrating lack of SOG--I would joke that we thought PP stood for "passing practice". However, inevitably one of those passes would find Chase and he would put it in the net. Being without Polacek this year we've had to restructure it, and it looked fantastic against Acadia. However, against our WCHA opponents we haven't even had the opportunity to pass around them-it seems more often than not they steal the puck and we're down in our own zone, trying to kill our own power play. I'm confident we'll figure it out soon however.

As for pulling the goalie, I'm not sure how the times shook out exactly, but we took a penalty awfully close to the end of the third. I think Appert pulled Bryce just to get us to an even number of skaters.

Bummed I missed the tailgate, haven't read the board in a while, did see RFAlph from a distance, and babo and the BRO as well. Next one I guess. Glad you made the trip RFAlph!

You must have good eyesight to see someone my size at a distance. :)

Appert's not the only one. I remember a women's game with the Sioux and they had their goalie pulled for practically the ENTIRE third period.

SA must have gotten that from Gwoz. Denver gave up 3 ENGs to MTU on Friday.

Now that I am safely back in DC after a rollercoaster of a flight, I suspect that it won't snow much in the CD. I did notice that Accuweather's estimate which was 7.1" this morning is now down to 5.5".

Big Mike A. did it against Colgate for us way back in the dark ages (but after our 1985 Championship). He kept 6 skaters on the ice to pepper the Colgate goalie so that he was beat for the mini game that followed in the playoffs in those days. There can be reasons and exceptions but it just seems that the 1 minute mark is the most efficient time to get the extra attacker on the ice without exposing your own goal for too long. And i really do think that being one goal down is just about the only time to do it unless it you are playing for a championship.

This paper (PDF) doesn't deal with finding the optimal time to pull the goalie, but it does show that pulling your goalie with 3 minutes left down by one goal or 6 minutes left down by two goals does increase your probability of winning (based on NHL scoring / penalty rates).

I remember that, quite often in recent memory, if we had a 5-on-3 in the 3rd, Appert would pull the goalie and make it 6-on-3, and try to get the goalie back out there once the first penalty expired at the next available moment.

I don't know that I'd call a one-or-two-time occurrence "quite often"

After reading this, I am truly sorry I missed it. but there was no way I could make it.
I saw you between the first and second period and was going to introduce myself, but far be it from me to interrupt a mother having a serious conversation with her son.
I am sure we will meet soon.

Ironic...B.R.O. and I never have serious convo's at the rink...if we were frowning it's because he can't always hear me from way up there...I INSIST you say hello next time (tonight, perhaps?).

I said it before and I'll say it again: this team is this close to being unbelievably good. All aspects continue to improve...January tells the true story, gents...I think we're witnessing a Mona Lisa...even SHE started out with some schmutz on the canvas...:)

I wouldn't say frowning, I would say serious.
I will not be there tonight, but if I can get a ticket, I will be going to Princeton.
I would love to touch base with DrD again and it seems like many posters are going to make that trip.

Those are the exceptions and i agree wholeheartedly with that.

Is Schmutz a forward or a defenseman? If he can score, put him in there for us.;)

Watching NHL games for a lifetime-you just do not see teams down 1 goal pulling the goalie too much more than 1 minute left. Not sure if pulling the goalie down 2 goals is done that often at all. I fully understand the concept-but we just have not been that much better an offensive threat out there with 6 men skating during the past few years. Ane once the strategy backfires-which is quite often-the game is then for all intents, over. I agree that pulling the goalie is a necessary tactic-but I just feel that we seem to do it a bit too early. Just my 2¢

For the football fans-Union beat RPI today 38-28 and we lose the Shoes. This year it seems we just give up a ton of yardage and points. We still have a couple games to turn this season into a success.
