Re: RPI 2010 Recruiting III: Monty's Quest for the Holy Grail

On Tuesday, the Cornwall Colts defeated the Pembroke Lumber Kings 5-3. Jacob Laliberté scored a goal and added two assists. Guy Leboeuf scored a PPG and had tripping and interference penalties. The best-of-seven playoff series is tied 2-2. http://cjhlsite.stats.pointstreak.com/boxscore.html?gameid=1245274

Laliberté's line is now 10-3-6-9-2.
His total is 60-65-54-119-36.
Leboeuf's line is now 10-1-5-6-12
His total is 72-11-24-35-76

A 60% rate. Getting better. :) Cornwall still must find a way to win a game in Pembroke.

You beat me to it! 60% indeed. I think you can only shut this kid down temporarily unless you devote tremendous defensive resources. The other ECAC teams are going to find out he is a nightmare to try and stop. The next few years could be a lot of fun in Troy.:)

I should have left that for you. :) I'll refrain in the future.

Hopefully, he and the other recruits will soon appear in the RPI directory.

He still hasn't even gotten a third star in the playoffs.

You would think a 3 point game would get him at least a 3rd star?

They'll find ways to stop Laliberté, Polacek, and D'Amigo. I think they will forget about Pirri and O'Grady, and they will have the season of their lives. With all this firepower, expect someone very underrated (OK, Pirri isn't underrated, but O'Grady definitely is) to shine.

He hasn't deserved one yet. His play over the last 10 games has been lackluster at best. Sure he has some moments, mostly on the PP, but his overall game looks like he mailed it in. SA was at the game tonight and if you ask him and he's honest, he will probably agree with my comments. LaBoeuf scored a nice goal on a one timer from the point but didn't impress otherwise, needs to use his size more when defending. SA has some competition for Ming and the Spinks as Harvard,Union and a few other schols were in Cornwall.

Just curious, what are your thoughts on Herskovitz? Also how would you compare his game to Leboeuf's?

Interesting question. At one time Herskovitz was on the NHL watch list while at Taft. Few players can skate at his level and that includes GL. They are both offensive threats, GL for his shot from the point and Herskovitz off the rush and a deadly snap shot from 25 feet he probably leads the league in goal posts and crossbars. GL gets 3X the PP time Herskovitz gets mainly due to JL moving back to the point after his line's PP shift which limits Herskovitz point production. Defensively GL is much better than Herskovitz who gets on the wrong side of the puck quite often forgets to tie up sticks, etc. Both players are not physical even though they are big boys, Herskovitz at 6'2" and GL at 6'4". Neither player are the first over the boards on the PK. From what I've seen GL is on the 2nd PK unit and Herskovitz only gets a taste now and then on the kill. Herskovitz is best in situations like 4X4 where he can use his great skating abilty to create time and space for himself while lugging the puck. GL isn't a gifted puck carrier even though he skates very well for a tall guy. As far as first pass is concerned, I'd give the edge to GL. If I had to choose between the two it would be GL but something tells me that Herskovitz has much more in him that for some reason doesn't come out on the ice. Hope this helps!

1timer - which uncommitted players from Pembroke do you like?

Another good question. Pembroke is a very good Jr A hockey team combining skill, size and hockey sense. Most if not all players can play at the D3 level with no trouble and I'm sure many can play at the D1 level if lucky enough to get the chance. My first player is Matt Peca not because his dad played in the NHL but because he is a very talanted player. One must remember he is a 93 and stats wise doesn't see much PP time. He is an excellent skater and has even better hockey sense. Plays both sides of the puck and one of the best forecheckers in the league. On D I really like Reinhardt, not flashy steady as a rock whos skills are better than you think. I believe Clark has a pretty good package to present to D1 as well. Big power type forward, excellent net presence but may not skate well enough for D1. Pembroke also has Poirier,Sauve,Farrell,Pletsch,Alvarez who lack maybe one ingredient for D1 either size or speed. I forgot Tosuian. What he lacks in size he makes up for with skill and speed probably not D1 material but a very good player.

You left out Helfrich. If he reverts back to his pre-injury form, There will be a lot of offense at the HFH this coming season.
Has Laliberte taken his SATs yet? I am more concerned at this point about his grades than his possible reluctance to attend RPI.
I don't think he would have taken the test if he didn't intend to come to Troy.

You're correct. Let's not forget Malchuk, either. He's a very hard worker out there. I think I better quit now before my stock drops even lower, though. ;)

I thought I had read on here that Laliberté took the SAT's. How long does the entire process take nowadays, from registration to final score?

Your stock is still good-we all hit a little recession once in a while but we have Ralph to keep us all in line:) Glad you mentioned Malchuk-Jenny and I were in Princeton to see him get severely injured a few years ago and great to see him finally playing like we knew he could. He works hard just about every shift and gives everything each time. He has delivered a couple of outrageous hits also.

Not to mention, he almost had a hat trick in the Bentley game, and both of those goals were him working hard in front of the net picking up the trash. In most of the post-game interviews, Coach would usually mention him as working hard out there. I think that year I travelled with the band to Q-Pac, and nit was tough to not see him out on the ice, since he was a very integral part to the team that year. It seems like each of the past 3 years we've been plagued by injuries. Malchuk, Bergin last year, Helfrich, Lee, and VERY close to D'Amigo this year (not to mention Bergin AGAIN for a couple weeks). If we were to stay entirely healthy for a year, who knows where we would be? Oh well, injuries are part of the game, and you have to play through them.

I too have noticed what I would call a bit of an increase in injuries the past few years. Not sure if it is a conditioning thing, injuries in practice thing, or perhaps caused by our style of play. Then again it could be Newtonian in origin-we do seem to be smaller than some of the other teams and big bodies make for tough collisions. I do think the game has changed some from years ago and the new rash of injuries is just part of that change. I don't follow other teams all that carefully so I do not know if they are experiencing the same thing. But back on subject-I am a big malchuk fan and hope for a big season from him next year.:)

Re: RPI 2010 Recruiting III: Monty's Quest for the Holy Grail

Lets hope Mally and Helf becomes this years Paul Kerins. That would be a great scenario.
Hat Trick hobey lets hope Chase sneaks into final 3 today.

Re: RPI 2010 Recruiting III: Monty's Quest for the Holy Grail

Maybe we shouldn't have a Part IV of this thread and just use to Off Season threads until next fall. There won't be that many more game summaries to report on which is the main reason that I started separate recruit threads.

I was wondering about that also. I can't remember how long it was when I took them, not that it would be relevant.
