Re: RPI 2010 Recruiting III: Monty's Quest for the Holy Grail

I'm sure there's no worry about him being one-and-done. He might have had academic limitations. He's very old for his league (will be a 21.5 year old freshman); cf Laliberte who will be a 20.0 year old freshman. Last year, at JL's age, he had good numbers but not nearly as strong as JL's (DC had 89 points in 59 games; JL has 103 points in 48 games).

Long story short, the thought is that Cross is much more "maxed out" on the ice, in addition to other off-ice limitations he might have been carrying.

Im not sure how jumping from 89 pts. up to 123 pts. indicates a kid is "maxing out"...He's bigger than JL and can score nearly as well. 21 is not at all uncommon for HE freshmen. Obviously folks with far more hockey knowledge than I didn't take an interest in Cross.

I'll still be interested to see how the kid adjusts to the D1 game...he certainly wouldn't be the first kid who makes people ask: "Who the heck is that?"

Re: RPI 2010 Recruiting III: Monty's Quest for the Holy Grail

It sounds like he wasn't rated that highly, as has been written here.

I guess that's were I'm dubious of so-called ratings... A kid with more size than JL hangs 123 pts. in the same league and somehow he's a lesser talent? From what I've seen from watching JL he's gonna have plenty of work to do to be a complete player at the D1 level (i.e. playing defense)..hard to believe Cross is that far behind, skillwise.

I guess I'll defer to the superior scouting brains who watched him and didn't bite...but it'll interesting to see how he does.

Re: RPI 2010 Recruiting III: Monty's Quest for the Holy Grail

On Monday, the Penticton Vees defeated the Merritt Centennials 9-1. Luke Curadi had an assist. Penticton has swept the best-of-seven playoff series 4-0. http://www.bchl.ca/leagues/hockey_boxScores.cfm?clientID=1413&leagueID=2393&gameID=802975

Curadi's line is now 4-0-1-1-11.
His total is 62-7-11-18-109.

The Big Red One finds the playoff scoresheet, nice ! The good news for the Vees is that they get a week of rest before their next series starts at home on the 9th. That should help them heal up a bit.

Actually, it says that it is scheduled for the 9th. I am waiting to put it in the stats file until I see it in the actual schedule. Did you find anything about the other two recruits whose next game I have listed as TBD?

We'll see how Cross does next season of course but I trust CH and his sources, and he is reated farily low their also. MTW, Cross was named the league <s>MVP</s> outstanding player.

Re: RPI 2010 Recruiting III: Monty's Quest for the Holy Grail

never saw a negative report on him by Heisnenberg. Saw Cross play twice, very good and better then JL in my opinion.
League mvp for a reason
One of Harvards guys watched him as well and even though he was not going to ever get in there, zero academic issues and said a very good player, top 2 line type for sure.

As I stated, he is a year and a half older than JL. JL's numbers at a younger age than DC were substantially better. JL has been putting up numbers basically the same as Cross despite Cross having the advantage of being a year and a half older (than both JL and almost all of his competition).

I don't understand what you mean by "zero academic issues". If he was "never going to get in" to Harvard there are some issues. The academic standards for hockey players at HU are not all that different than at most of the ECAC schools (excepting QU and Clarkson).

Re: RPI 2010 Recruiting III: Monty's Quest for the Holy Grail

It will be intersting to see the video of this game when it is posted. The summary is up but not a video yet.
The high tech Merritt video was not in operation for that game, Ralph...no highlights or flashy lights...see? I told you it would grow on you...:p

Re: RPI 2010 Recruiting III: Monty's Quest for the Holy Grail

I thought that is what I wrote? :p

You wrote that the series will start then, not that it is scheduled for then. Schedules in junior leagues can change, especially before both teams are known. For example, sometimes one of the rinks is not available.

Yep, it's semantics. :D

Re: RPI 2010 Recruiting III: Monty's Quest for the Holy Grail

That was the 4th game of round two. See below. :D :p :D  ;)

On Tuesday, the Burlington Cougars defeated the Streetsville Derbys 3-2. Patrick Koudys had a cross checking penalty. Burlington has swept the best-of-seven playoff series 4-0. http://cchl.stats.pointstreak.com/boxscore.html?gameid=12233110

Koudys's playoff line is now 8-0-1-1-16.
His total is 58-5-29-34-58.

Thanks. Now I can stop looking for it. :D

The other thing to note is that Cornwall traded Cross for Laliberte despite the fact that they had Pembroke over a barrel since JL wouldn't play there anymore. The conclusion that I drew at that time was that JL was the better player.

Because he never applied or wanted to go there. My bad. Harvard was not what he was looking for... PC has tough academic standards and is a very good school. If he can get in there, probably could of at Harvard as well. Not all kids want that route, many like Hockey East

The other thing I forgot to point out is that DC has a couple teammates in the top 10 of scoring (I believe), whereas JL has nowhere near that same support. I will check on the specific numbers later.

Tough to make a value/skill judgment regarding that deal as Pembroke had to make a deal.

Heisenberg doesn't do reports, but he lists players in order based upon his opinions of their talent. (I assume he hasn't seen all of the players himself.) He ranks JL #1 in all of Ontario. You can count where Cross fits in. It is way below JL, Quinn, and Higgs, although above Leboeuf.

Granted if you look at lists from past years, he isn't always correct.
