Re: RPI 2010 Recruiting III: Monty's Quest for the Holy Grail

A fighting hat trick! He is just going to fit in superbly with old time RPI hatchet hockey. I can hardly wait.:D

I thought that you didn't like being down two men.:)
This kind of play can only bring more penalty minutes to the RPI Engineers.
I like hitting and tough play as much as anyone, but we are not in a position to be initiating this kind of play.
As you have said many times yourself, we get enough penalties on reputation alone.
We are going to be a very good team next year, I don't want to throw it away in the penalty box.

Doc was just having fun. As I've pointed out here before, Luke is not a goon who is being brought to RPI to be a thug. He plays in a league that fights. He also happens to be just about the biggest physical speciment in the entire BCHL.

The Vees game last night was a playoff blowout (6-1) in the victim's barn. Add to that, Luke's bout came on the heels of an earlier fight in the 3rd period where a Merritt kid absolutely got his clock cleaned, further ratcheting up tensions. Luke may have "instigated" but my guess is there were plenty of cheap shots, slashes, random BS on the ice, that Harbison sent out Luke to lay down the law. That's how its done in that league.

As far as next year is concerned, all of our defenseman - with the exception of JFK - will be a) on the small side or b) more offensive minded guys, which is fine, but we need some toughness in the rear corps. Bergin and Foss aren't very physical. Bailen is said to have a nice mean streak, but he is not physically imposing.

With all of the offense we'll have, I say we need THE BIG RED ONE on campus.

I would think that Leboeuf also is on the tough side, although he recently has had a tendency to hit from behind. :D

Thanks-for eloquently stating my position well. Of course I dont want needless penalties but we get pushed around quite a bit by the bigger teams and will need the Curadi presence on the ice to make things a bit more equal. Most people will think twice before taking a cheap shot against us if they know that they could get hit back by a Mack Truck. I really look forward to our having that kind of deterrent. :)

Re: RPI 2010 Recruiting III: Monty's Quest for the Holy Grail

Folks here will recall Pembroke's Damian Cross, who was the other player involved in the Laliberte to Cornwall trade. According to Heisenberg, Cross is headed to Providence. He is leading the league in scoring: 61-53-85-138.

As we mentioned before, I am surprised the kid had gone uncommitted this long...

Re: RPI 2010 Recruiting III: Monty's Quest for the Holy Grail

Glad to see him going to Hockey East so we wont have to deal with him unless we get a nonleague game or meet in the NCAAs

Also I wonder why he was uncommitted for so long? Schools afraid of one and done or him just not showing up at all?

I doubt we'll see RPI and Providence hooking up in any non-league tilts any time soon.

I'm sure there's no worry about him being one-and-done. He might have had academic limitations. He's very old for his league (will be a 21.5 year old freshman); cf Laliberte who will be a 20.0 year old freshman. Last year, at JL's age, he had good numbers but not nearly as strong as JL's (DC had 89 points in 59 games; JL has 103 points in 48 games).

Long story short, the thought is that Cross is much more "maxed out" on the ice, in addition to other off-ice limitations he might have been carrying.

He also isn't rated particularly highly by Chris Heisenberg.

Don't get me wrong, I do not think that Luke is a goon.
I do think that he is very passionate about his game, and that sometimes needs to be reigned in a little on the college level.
I love his size and his game, I just don't want to have a player that the referees are going to be paying special attention to. We already seem to have a team that is in that looked at very closely.
I am so looking forward to next year. :D

Re: RPI 2010 Recruiting III: Monty's Quest for the Holy Grail

It will be intersting to see the video of this game when it is posted. The summary is up but not a video yet.

Flash an annoying goal graphic 9 times. Follow each one up with 3 clips of people doing the swim. There's your video. :D

And ehf, I don't think we have to worry too much about the big red one drawing attention from the refs, as most of the opponents will stay at least 4 feet away. :D Heck, Colgate learned that with Kennedy pretty quick.

You are right about the video although Curadi's fight will probably be included. :)
