The R-W game was formerly a season kick-off team scrimmage open to the public. Word is they are bringing it back this year

Re: RPI 2010 Off-season thread V: Captain Kennedy and the A-Team

My humblest apologies for jumping in here and posting something slightly off topic. I have a couple of RPI jerseys that i am looking to sell to whittle down the collection. I have a 2005 black Friday jersey, and a home Kirk MacDonald senior year captain's game worn jersey. My wife and I just welcomed our first child into the world, and i would like to see these jersey's got to a good home. I am NOT looking to get what i paid for them, i would take less to see them used. Please e-mail me at jsander4@nycap.rr.com if you are interested.
Thanks!
Jeff

I find that Just Dance could have a lot of application to our offensive guys... Just Shoot, everything gonna be okay *doo* *do* *do*

Re: RPI 2010 Off-season thread V: Captain Kennedy and the A-Team

The current game is faster, but it has sacrificed too much defensive play in my opinion.

So, enforcing rules that reward speed and skill is a sacrifice? Hate to tell you but Seth is building EXACTLY that type of team. Swift, talented forwards who burn Dmen on the outside and quick, mobile defensemen who can join the rush and create havoc on the opposition. Or would we want a team that clutches and grabs (all within the rules) which was kinda sorta what was played here (and in the ECAC) prior to Seth? Count me in for enforcing the rules that reward the better team, the one that can play effective defense by excelling on offense. Remember what Gretzky is claimed to have said: "The most effective defensive player on the ice is the one than has the puck!"

Please, enforce every hold, obstruction (fill in the blank), and hook. I'll bet RPI will be on the power play far more often than its opponent!

A final word (for now). USA Hockey has done well with its mission to develop players to compete on the international stage. Its principal weakness has been at the grass roots level but that's another story altogether.

First, I would like to see good hockey played at both ends of the ice. If you just want to give the defensemen red capes and have them wave at the forwards going bye, then you can have that kind of hockey.
I would like to be able to give a little resistance.
And if you are going to quote someone on defense, I suggest you pick a defenseman.
As for RPI, you haven't been paying attention, we spend a lot more time in the box than our opponents.
Just let the players on both sides of the puck play their games within the rules.
Right now, the rules favor the offense and I am not in favor of any discrepency.

Re: RPI 2010 Off-season thread V: Captain Kennedy and the A-Team

The rules are being properly interpreted again after years of letting everything go uncalled. Whether they're being called correctly is a point of nightly debate during the season, but calling the obstruction, the interference and the hooking once again is the right move. Having it go largely ignored for about 10 years is what nearly killed the game.

Today is 23 August 2010. There are 46 days until RPI's next game.

This is based upon 8 October for the start of next season.

The game has always been physical. Part of that is having defensemen be able to stand up incoming forwards at the blue line or clear them out from in front of the net. The changes in the rules have made the officials more important as it is now up to their interpretation as to what constitutes holding and interference. Count me as one who misses the old days when the defensemen were able to play defense with some passion and abandon. This was a hitting game and some(but of course not all) of the rule changes are turning it into basketball-where the refs can and do call anything at any time(especially in the last minutes of a game). I agree that obvious infractions should and must be called-but many of these changes I just do not see for the better. I am in total agreement with EHF on this. I wonder what old time defense greats like Doug Harvey would think about all of this?

Has anyone in Troy seen Brandon Pirri yet?
I am not up on him from last year...might there be lingering injury that has been medically tended to? Might SA be covering for that to prevent unnecessary concern (and thus causing the very same)?

I doubt that there is one from last season because he participated in the Blackhawks' prospect camp recently. Conceivably, he had an injury there.

Re: RPI 2010 Off-season thread V: Captain Kennedy and the A-Team

Brandon Pirri is still in the RPI directory. That's good news. OTOH so are D'Amigo and Watts, so it probably isn't meaningful. :D

Go back and look at tapes from when Doug Harvey played and you will notice there was very little clutching and grabbing. Plenty of body checks but very little cheap stuff that ruins the flow of the game. Of course, back then the skaters weren't as fast so it wasn't quite as necessary.

In my opinion there are two interpretations necessary for a well reffed hockey game. Refs need to allow more to slide when the puck in in your own end and especially in front of the net. When it is at the other end and the team is breaking out then obstructions and hooks need to be called. End to end rushes are the most exciting aspect of the game and the rules need to be properly interpreted to maximize the opportunities. In front of your own net or in the corners though and it's old time hockey time!

Has anyone in Troy seen Brandon Pirri yet?

According to RPInfo, the dorms open Wednesday, and classes begin next Monday. I realize that many of the other players (including current sophomores) are already in Troy, but if he isn't seen by next Monday, THEN I would start worrying.
