Re: RPI 2010 Off-season thread V: Captain Kennedy and the A-Team

Agreed. Smaller goalie pads would make a significant improvement in the game for the better. One of my pet peeves (nit picking here) is the slash rule; I'm all for the penalty if you make contact with the other player. But if a player can hit your stick and cause you to drop it, then HOLD YOUR STICK TIGHTER! Man up...
In some respects we don't need to plow ahead to improve the game we need to go back to where this was a tough game played by tough hombres and every little touch isn't some sort of obstruction penalty.I remember a day you couldn't play this game if you didn't finish you checks(ie:pin your man to the boards),or if you didn't defend the blue line w/your life and deny unimpeded movement into the O zone.....now those things are all penalties that slow the game down more than the actions themselves.Maybe Im a dinosauer, but in my humble opinion what we need is some OLD TIME HOCKEY BABY !!!!!!!!!!!!!...And oh by the way disbanding USA hockey would be a step in the right direction early signings lay right at their door step.I would be interested how many early signings came from USNDT.I'll bet most of the American ones did.

Re: RPI 2010 Off-season thread V: Captain Kennedy and the A-Team

Please...I bleed dolla' bills with every snap of a composite stick...

I do understand the safety concern related to free wheeling sticks. But again, the 'doctor' (Doc, present company excepted) is treating the symptom and not the source of the illness. All these penalties have been created/tightened because the players have become 'invincible' since the armor-like pads and cage were introduced. You would not see half the penalties you do that are stick related if 'Johnny Puckhandler' thought he'd lose his 'gibbs' (or, worse, an eyeball) and thus keep his stick on the ice...jmo...and for the record I did not always believe that but I've seen plenty of players who take liberties with no consequences because they're wrapped up like the Michelin Man...and thus I have seen the light.

Thanks for the exception.:) I am one of those that still wants to see Old Time Hockey. I grew up with the Gordie Howes, Sid Abels, Maurice Richards of the world and miss that old time tenacity. I do understand some of the changes that have been made for safety concerns-but darn it, this game does not need a lot of fixing. It is just fine as the sport it is.

I agree w all this especially the last part. I think this line of thought could be taken to the face shield issue. I've talk to several folks that say when you have the full cage, players are more likely to go head hunting. The goalie pads have become outrageous. Look back to to the pads of the 70's and 80's (heyday of the game IMO) and they are much smaller.

This is based upon 8 October for the start of next season.

Re: RPI 2010 Off-season thread V: Captain Kennedy and the A-Team

All of this old time hockey discussion is nice but I don't see the ideas that they are looking at as somehow anti-defense nor anti-toughness. The idea to me is to keep the play moving and exciting and not revert to the NJ Devil stick/hookfest of the early 90's. To me it's simple... if someone has the puck go get him and finish your check. If they don't then you better either skate your butt off or play correct position. If you can't and you instead have to hold or hook then you go to the box.

And, if we are concerned about stick work, then make any contact with another player above the waist a penalty and any contact to the head (intentional or not) a game misconduct - with exceptions when the player is making a play on the puck. That will keep the sticks down.

So USA hockey is at fault for developing better players? Absurd. Clearly the problem is with the NHL collective bargaining agreement. USA hockey is doing great. Did you miss the world juniors last year?

Yeah, I gotta agree with this one. USA Hockey is a positive force. The CBA is the true ish.

Everyone please excuse tb, he doesn't believe in American exceptionalism.

Re: RPI 2010 Off-season thread V: Captain Kennedy and the A-Team

stopped by HFH yesterday...the "old" scoreboard is back up. The side boards are up & the glass was being attached. The 2 ends were left open to allow const. equip. to move in & out. The "old" scoreboard was up & hanging from the rafters. Tinordi was there & he was telling me that he was under the impression that most of the work around the ice area was done, scoreboard included. The major portion of the remaining work appears to be the completion of the lux/vip boxes & the front entry. The ice would be in place probably late Sept.

if you consider dragging 15yr.old kids from their home shipping them off to Michigan sticking them in a Strange home, sending them to a strange school and stuffing hockey down their throat 24/7 "doing great" then I guess I concede. And we wonder why when these Kids need to make decesions regarding their hockey life as opposed to life after hockey they as of late choose the shot at the golden ring...they only know hockey life.OBTW I believe USA hockey recieves a development fee from the NHL when these Kids turn Pro....I might be wrong maybe Red Cloud or RB could clear that up for us,,,and I don't think its "chump change" either. So is this about the Good OLE USA and our hockey prowess or is it about the money.I don't know but I have my doubts(que up days of our lives)This is the Canadien and Eurupean Model and we couldn't beat them so we decided to join them.Is this good or bad I guess thats a personal opinion.

JM, I have no problem with obstruction penalties, when they obstruct. If your stick touches the hands of a player with the puck, it is a penalty today. I have a problem with that. If your stick is parallel to the ice and it touches the player with the puck, thats a penalty. I have a problem with that. If you hit a players stick and it breaks, it is a penalty even though those sticks have serious strength problems, I have a problem with that.
Old time hockey, you had to commit an offense to be whistled. Today, you just have to show up.
As for the Devils, they played within the rules and won three cups.
It was not pretty, or illegal, but it got the job done.
The current game is faster, but it has sacrificed too much defensive play in my opinion.

Could not agree more. :)

RC..your always on the job ! Excellent piece...Thanks

We are indeed lucky to have RC. No other thread has a person who cares enough or the writing talent to pull this off. You the man. This season is about Allen. We still have the firepower to do major damage (Hobey Baker finalist and 2nd Rounder). Allen has to be much more consistent than last year. Bottom line he needs to be big every night and I know he can. We had huge quality wins last year but it ended terribly. As SA always says you win with upperclassmen, now is Allen's time to shine. BTW- especially enjoyed the Lady Gaga part and her contribution to the advancement of western civilization.

The Spink twins went to a QMJHL training camp but retained their NCAA eligibility http://www.standard-freeholder.com/ArticleDisplay.aspx?e=2723118. I wonder if we have an interest in them.

I have no doubt that Monty ID'ed them early as he did with so many others. The question not only is whether we or not we are interested, but whether Seth & Co. are able to rebuild and maintain the relationships that Monty fostered with these kids, parents, coaches and advisors. Seth is good at it for sure, but he has a lot of things in his plate.
